Book Environmental Contamination from Uranium Production Facilities and Their Remediation

Download or read book Environmental Contamination from Uranium Production Facilities and Their Remediation written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacies of past uranium mining and milling continue to be of concern and require assessment and remedial action. This problem has been recognized in many parts of the world over the past three decades, but has received increased attention since the end of the Cold War. Considerable effort and resources have been expended in dealing with this legacy. However, it has to be noted that the search for uranium has covered almost all countries on the globe. The result in some countries is a legacy of numerous small scale mines and mills. For economic and other reasons, including less stringent environmental standards and awareness at the time, these operations may not have been properly closed out and made safe. The remediation strategies and techniques developed by major problem holders, such as the USA or Germany, often would be out of scale for the problems in other countries. Therefore an international workshop was organized in Lisbon from 11 to 13 February 2004 as a forum for the exchange of views and experiences of countries with smaller scale uranium mining legacies.

Book EMC 91 Non Ferrous Metallurgy Present and Future

Download or read book EMC 91 Non Ferrous Metallurgy Present and Future written by Jean Vereecken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers that will be presented at 'EMC '91 '-the European Metals Conference-to be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 15 to 20 September 1991, and organized by Benelux Metallurgie, GDMB (Gesellschaft Deutscher Metallhutten und Bergleute) and IMM (the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy). 'EMC '91' is the first of an intended major series organized at the European level with the aim of bringing together all those who are involved with the extraction and processing of non-ferrous metals-European metallurgists and their international colleagues-to provide them with the opportunity to exchange views on the state and evolution of their industry. The programme covers all the different aspects of the metallurgy of non-ferrous metals from mining to fabricated products. Particular attention is being paid to the European non -ferrous industry with respect to changes in demand, the technology used, pressures on the environment and the competitive position of manufacturers. The contributions of the plenary lecturers (copies of which will appear in the IMM journal Minerals Industry International in 1991-92) and the many authors are gratefully acknowledged. Thanks are also due to the referees of the papers, the sponsors, the companies that have allowed registrants to visit their operations, the chairmen of the technical sessions and the staffs of the organizing bodies for their efficient administrative work. • Author : Antonio Valero Capilla

  • Pages : 629 pages

Download or read book Thanatia written by Antonio Valero Capilla and published by World Scientific Publishing Company Incorporated. This book was released on 2014 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Gaia becoming Thanatia, a resource exhausted planet? For how long can our high-tech society be sustained in the light of declining mineral ore grades, heavy dependence on un-recycled critical metals and accelerated material dispersion? These are all root causes of future disruptions that need to be addressed today. This book presents a cradle-to-cradle view of the Earth's abiotic resources through a novel and rigorous approach based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics: heat dissipates and materials deteriorate and disperse. Quality is irreversibly lost. This allows for the assessment of such depletion and can be used to estimate the year where production of the main mineral commodities could reach its zenith. By postulating Thanatia, one acquires a sense of destiny and a concern for a unified global management of the planet's abiotic resource endowment. The book covers the core aspects of geology, geochemistry, mining, metallurgy, economics, the environment, thermodynamics and thermochemistry. It is supported by comprehensive databases related to mineral resources, including detailed compositions of the Earth's layers, thermochemical properties of over 300 substances, historical energy and mineral resource inventories, energy consumption and environmental impacts in the mining and metallurgical sector and world recycling rates of commodities.

Book Building Exploration Capability for the 21st Century

Download or read book Building Exploration Capability for the 21st Century written by Karen D. Kelley and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth's near-surface mineralogy has diversified over more than 4.5 b.y. from no more than a dozen preplanetary refractory mineral species (what have been referred to as "ur-minerals" by Hazen et al., 2008) to around 5,000 species (based on the list of minerals approved by the International Mineralogical Association; http://rruff.info/ima). This dramatic diversification is a consequence of three principal physical, chemical, and biological processes: element selection and concentration (primarily through planetary differentiation and fluidrock interactions); an expanded range of mineral-forming environments (including temperature, pressure, redox, and activities of volatile species); and the influence of the biosphere.

Book Trace Elements in Coal

Download or read book Trace Elements in Coal written by Dalway J. Swaine and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace Elements in Coal focuses on the compositions, reactions, and properties of trace elements in coal. The book first discusses the origin of trace elements in coal. The formation of peat; geological and geochemical aspects of coal seams; geology of Australian coals; constitution of coal; history of trace elements in coal; and coal mining in Australia are discussed. The text also clarifies the mode of occurrence of trace elements in coal. The identification of minerals in coal; silicon-rich minerals; carbonate minerals; sulfide minerals; lignites and brown coals; and phosphates are discussed. The book then underscores the methods of analysis. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry; atomic absorption spectrometry; spark source mass spectrometry; and neuron activation analysis are described. The text also focuses on the contents of trace elements in coal; comparisons of coal with shale and soil; relationship of radioactivity and coal; and relevance of trace elements in coal. The book is a good source of data for readers wanting to study the trace elements in coal.
