Book excerpt: Most of the world's great volcanic massive sulphide ore deposits, most of its porphyry copper ores, and many of its richest gold deposits occur in association with basalt-andesite-dactite-rhyolite laval suites that have been erupted from the volcanoes of ancient volcanic island arcs and their Precambrian equivalents. The volcanic arc and related aquatic-volcanic environments are now recognized as critical to an understanding of the evolution of the earth's crust, to the unravelling of the petrogenesis of many important ore types, and to the planning of much mineral exploration. This book is concerned with the behaviour of the `ore elements' - copper, zinc, lead, cobalt, nickel, barium, and other - in young, unmetamorphosed volcanic arc suites ranging from high-magnesium basalts to dactites and rhyolites. Using principally the Late Tertiary to Recent lavas of the Solomon Islands Younger Volcanic Suite, the author considers the patterns of abundance of these elements bothin the `whole rocks' and their constituent minerals, and the way in which the metals may be enriched or impoverished in the residual melt as an arc lava series evolves from basalt to rhyolite.

Book excerpt: Comparison between the isotopic compositions of lavas, and crustal and mantle xenoliths indicate that the incompatible elements in the TLTF magmas, including a major part of the ore metals, were ultimately derived from a subducted oceanic slab with Pacific mantle affinity. Regional and local isotopic trends in the volcanic rocks in the region indicate that subducted oceanic slabs overall control the composition of the island-arc magmas. Once the contribution from the subducting slab decreases, incorporation of a mantle component with Indian affinity can be identified in the isotopic composition of the lavas in the region.

Arc-continent collision is thought to have been one of the most important process involved in the growth of the continental crust over geological time, and may also play an important role in its recycling back into the mantle via subduction. Understanding the geological processes that take place during arc-continent collision is therefore of importance for our understanding of how collisional orogens evolve and how the continental crust grows or is destroyed. Furthermore, zones of arc-continent collision are producers of much of the worlds primary economic wealth in the form of minerals, so understanding the processes that take place during these tectonic events is of importance in modeling how this mineral wealth is formed and preserved. This book brings together seventeen papers that are dedicated to the investigation of the tectonic processes that take place during arc-continent collision. It is divided into four sections that deal firstly with the main players involved in any arc-continent collision; the continental margin, the subduction zone, and finally the volcanic arc and its mineral deposits. The second section presents eight examples of arc-continent collisions that range from being currently active through to Palaeoproterozoic in age. The third section contains two papers, one that deals with the obduction of large-slab ophiolites and a second that presents a wide range of physical models of arc-continent collision. The fourth section brings everything that comes before together into a discussion of the processes of arc-continent collision.
