Book Ordo Romanus Primus Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ordo Romanus Primus Classic Reprint written by E. G. Cuthbert F. Atchley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ordo Romanus Primus The following Introduction to the earliest Ordo Romanus makes no claim to originality, having no pretensions to be anything more than a compilation from the works of the numerous liturgical writers who have expounded either the whole or parts of this venerable monument of the ceremonial of the early medieval Church in Rome. The objective which the general Editor has kept before me is the intelligent Churchman who is interested in the rites and ceremonies of the Catholic Church, but has little leisure or opportunity of examining the numerous works that deal with the whole or parts of the matters that belong to the ceremonial of solemn mass. With Lindewode I may say, present opus non precipue nee principaliter viris scribo scientia preditis, sed potius simpliciter Utteratis et pauca intelligentibus: but I fear that I cannot go on to claim for this Introduction even the modest estimate at which Lindewode appraises his Provincial as a book for students, for it is unlikely that such as they will find any thing therein of which they are not already fully aware. • Author : Louis Weil
  • Publisher : Church Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2013-04-01

Download or read book Liturgical Sense written by Louis Weil and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Weil looks back on his work shaping the liturgical life of the Episcopal Church through his involvement with the development of The 1979 Book of Common Prayer— and looks forward to the future of the church and its liturgical life. Through stories and first-person anecdotes, Weil does “narrative theology” as only he can. Although most points of reference are to the 1979 BCP, the book is aiming at a more fundamental level—not just Episcopal or even Anglican liturgy, but liturgical rites as such: how do they “do what they do”?—or NOT do when they are done badly! “Liturgical Sense” is two dimensional: both the “common sense” of liturgical rites and also their “aesthetic sense.” It is Dr. Weil’s contention that in American culture we have an inherent inability to “think symbolically.” Dr. Weil seeks to encourage a return to “liturgical sense” across the church.

Book Liturgy and Society in Early Medieval Rome

Download or read book Liturgy and Society in Early Medieval Rome written by John F. Romano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The liturgy, the public worship of the Catholic Church, was a crucial factor in forging the society of early medieval Rome. As the Roman Empire dissolved, a new world emerged as Christian bishops stepped into the power vacuum left by the dismantling of the Empire. Among these potentates, none was more important than the bishop of Rome, the pope. The documents, archaeology, and architecture that issued forth from papal Rome in the seventh and eighth centuries preserve a precious glimpse into novel societal patterns. The underexploited liturgical sources in particular enrich and complicate our historical understanding of this period. They show how liturgy was the ’social glue’ that held together the Christian society of early medieval Rome - and excluded those who did not belong to it. This study places the liturgy center stage, filling a gap in research on early medieval Rome and demonstrating the utility of investigating how the liturgy functioned in medieval Europe. It includes a detailed analysis of the papal Mass, the central act of liturgy and the most obvious example of the close interaction of liturgy, social relations and power. The first extant Mass liturgy, the First Roman Ordo, is also given a new presentation in Latin here with an English translation and commentary. Other grand liturgical events such as penitential processions are also examined, as well as more mundane acts of worship. Far from a pious business with limited influence, the liturgy established an exchange between humans and the divine that oriented Roman society to God and fostered the dominance of the clergy.

Book The Early Reception and Appropriation of the Apostle Peter 60 800 CE

Download or read book The Early Reception and Appropriation of the Apostle Peter 60 800 CE written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apostle Peter gradually became one of the most famous figures of the ancient world. His almost undisputed reputation made the disciple an exquisite anchor by which new practices within and outside the Church could be established, including innovations in fields as diverse as architecture, art, cult, epigraphy, liturgy, poetry and politics. This interdisciplinary volume inquires the way in which the figure of Peter functioned as an anchor for various people from different periods and geographical areas. The concept of Anchoring Innovation is used to investigate the history of the reception of the apostle Peter from the first century up to Charlemagne, revealing as much about Peter as about the context in which this reception took place.

In this book for the first time, critical studies in the learned periodicals of many countries have been carefully sifted and the results arranged to give a clear picture of the development of the Eucharistic rite.
