Book Ordinal Optimization of Communication Network Performance

Download or read book Ordinal Optimization of Communication Network Performance written by Jeffrey E. Wieselthier and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordinal optimization can be an effective technique for efficiently finding nearly optimal solutions to complex problems. The motivation behind this approach is that finding the optimal solution (or control policy) is often too costly or time consuming, although a suboptimal solution may provide sufficiently good performance. In earlier studies on sequential machines, we demonstrated the effectiveness of ordinal optimization based on the Standard Clock (SC) parallel simulation technique. In this report we study the use of SC and ordinal optimization techniques on the massively parallel Connection Machine CM-5E. The use of the CM-5E has greatly extended the size of problems that can be addressed. For example, whereas our studies on sequential machines were typically limited to wireless networking examples with up to 8 transceivers per node, the use of the CM-5E has permitted the study of examples with up to 4,000 transceivers per node, thus permitting the study of examples with the dimensions of high-speed networks. We address self-regulation and scalability properties of the solutions, as well as the determination of good solutions for large, finely-quantized systems. The CM-5E has enabled us to demonstrate that good solutions can be found quickly, and often without the need for high-performance computer resources.

Book Ordinal Optimization

Download or read book Ordinal Optimization written by Yu-Chi Ho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-23 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance evaluation of increasingly complex human-made systems requires the use of simulation models. However, these systems are difficult to describe and capture by succinct mathematical models. The purpose of this book is to address the difficulties of the optimization of complex systems via simulation models or other computation-intensive models involving possible stochastic effects and discrete choices. This book establishes distinct advantages of the "softer" ordinal approach for search-based type problems, analyzes its general properties, and shows the many orders of magnitude improvement in computational efficiency that is possible.

Book Discrete Event Systems Manufacturing Systems and Communication Networks

Download or read book Discrete Event Systems Manufacturing Systems and Communication Networks written by P.R. Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications DISCRETE EVENT SYSTEMS, MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS AND COMMUNICATION NETWORKS is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1992-93 IMA program on "Control Theory. " The study of discrete event dynamical systems (DEDS) has become rapidly popular among researchers in systems and control, in communication networks, in manufacturing, and in distributed computing. This development has created problems for re searchers and potential "consumers" of the research. The first problem is the veritable Babel of languages, formalisms, and approaches, which makes it very difficult to determine the commonalities and distinctions among the competing schools of approaches. The second, related, problem arises from the different traditions, paradigms, values, and experience that scholars bring to their study of DEDS, depending on whether they come from control, com munication, computer science, or mathematical logic. As a result, intellectual exchange among scholars becomes compromised by unexplicated assumptions. The purpose of the Workshop was to promote exchange among scholars representing some of the major "schools" of thought in DEDS with the hope that (1) greater clarity will be achieved thereby, and (2) cross-fertilization will lead to more fruitful questions. We thank P. R. Kumar and P. P. Varaiya for organizing the workshop and editing the proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation and the Army Research Office, whose financial support made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr.

Book Stochastic Simulation Optimization For Discrete Event Systems Perturbation Analysis Ordinal Optimization And Beyond

Download or read book Stochastic Simulation Optimization For Discrete Event Systems Perturbation Analysis Ordinal Optimization And Beyond written by Chun-hung Chen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete event systems (DES) have become pervasive in our daily lives. Examples include (but are not restricted to) manufacturing and supply chains, transportation, healthcare, call centers, and financial engineering. However, due to their complexities that often involve millions or even billions of events with many variables and constraints, modeling these stochastic simulations has long been a “hard nut to crack”. The advance in available computer technology, especially of cluster and cloud computing, has paved the way for the realization of a number of stochastic simulation optimization for complex discrete event systems. This book will introduce two important techniques initially proposed and developed by Professor Y C Ho and his team; namely perturbation analysis and ordinal optimization for stochastic simulation optimization, and present the state-of-the-art technology, and their future research directions.

Book Resource Management and Performance Analysis of Wireless Communication Networks

Download or read book Resource Management and Performance Analysis of Wireless Communication Networks written by Shunfu Jin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-03-17 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the diversification of Internet services and the increase in mobile users, efficient management of network resources has become an extremely important issue in the field of wireless communication networks (WCNs). Adaptive resource management is an effective tool for improving the economic efficiency of WCN systems as well as network design and construction, especially in view of the surge in mobile device demands. This book presents modelling methods based on queueing theory and Markov processes for a wide variety of WCN systems, as well as precise and approximate analytical solution methods for the numerical evaluation of the system performance. This is the first book to provide an overview of the numerical analyses that can be gleaned by applying queueing theory, traffic theory and other analytical methods to various WCN systems. It also discusses the recent advances in the resource management of WCNs, such as broadband wireless access networks, cognitive radio networks, and green cloud computing. It assumes a basic understanding of computer networks and queueing theory, and familiarity with stochastic processes is also recommended. The analysis methods presented in this book are useful for first-year-graduate or senior computer science and communication engineering students. Providing information on network design and management, performance evaluation, queueing theory, game theory, intelligent optimization, and operations research for researchers and engineers, the book is also a valuable reference resource for students, analysts, managers and anyone in the industry interested in WCN system modelling, performance analysis and numerical evaluation.

Book Monotonic Optimization in Communication and Networking Systems

Download or read book Monotonic Optimization in Communication and Networking Systems written by Ying Zhang (Prof.) and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimization has been widely used in recent design of communication and networking systems. One major hurdle in this endeavor lies in the nonconvexity of many optimization problems that arise from practical systems. To address this issue, we observe that most nonconvex problems encountered in communication and networking systems exhibit monotonicity or hidden monotonicity structures. A systematic use of the monotonicity properties would substantially alleviate the difficulty in obtaining the global optimal solutions of the problems. This monograph provides a succinct and accessible introduction to monotonic optimization, including the formulation skills and solution algorithms. Through several application examples, we will illustrate modeling techniques and algorithm details of monotonic optimization in various scenarios. With this promising technique, many previously difficult problems can now be solved with great efficiency. With this monograph, we wish to spur new research activities in broadening the scope of application of monotonic optimization in communication and networking systems.

Book Distributed Resource Allocation and Performance Optimization for Video Communication Over Mesh Networks Based on Swarm Intelligence

Download or read book Distributed Resource Allocation and Performance Optimization for Video Communication Over Mesh Networks Based on Swarm Intelligence written by Bo Wang and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mesh networking technologies allow a system of communication devices to communicate with each other over a dynamic and self-organizing wired or wireless network from everywhere at anytime. Large-scale mesh communication networks involve a large number of heterogeneous devices, each with different on-board computation speeds, energy supplies, and communication capabilities, communicating over the dynamic and unreliable networks. How to coordinate the resource utilization behaviors of these devices in a large-scale mesh network remains a challenging task. And an effective solution to this type of problems needs to meet the following three requirements: distributed, asynchronous, and non-convex. In this work, based on swarm intelligence principles, we develop a set of distributed and asynchronous schemes for resource allocation and performance optimization for a wide range of mesh networking-based applications, including particle swarm optimization (PSO) with convex mapping, decentralized PSO, distributed and asynchronous PSO, and energy efficient DAPSO. Our extensive experimental results in distributed resource allocation and performance optimization demonstrate that the proposed schemes work efficiently and robustly. Compared to existing algorithms, including gradient search and Lagrange optimization, the proposed approach had the advantage of faster convergence and the ability to handle generic network utility functions. Compared to centralized performance optimization schemes, the proposed approach significantly reduces communication overhead while achieving similar performance. The distributed algorithms for resource allocation and performance optimization provide analytical insights and important guidelines for practical design of large-scale video mesh networks.
