Book excerpt: A lot of probabilists and statisticians, as well as actuarial mathematicians, reliability engineers, meteorologists, hydrologists, economists, business and sport analysts, very often deal with order statistics, which plays an important role in various fields of statistics and its applications. The authors suggest an approach to studying order statistics which proposes an active participation of our reader in the studying process. This book enables a reader to check his/her level of understanding of the theory of order statistics. It gives basic formulae (without proof), which are most important in the theory, and presents a lot of examples, which illustrate the theoretical statements.

Book A First Course in Order Statistics

Download or read book A First Course in Order Statistics written by Barry C. Arnold and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated classic text will aid readers in understanding much of the current literature on order statistics: a flourishing field of study that is essential for any practising statistician and a vital part of the training for students in statistics. Written in a simple style that requires no advanced mathematical or statistical background, the book introduces the general theory of order statistics and their applications. The book covers topics such as distribution theory for order statistics from continuous and discrete populations, moment relations, bounds and approximations, order statistics in statistical inference and characterisation results, and basic asymptotic theory. There is also a short introduction to record values and related statistics. The authors have updated the text with suggestions for further reading that may be used for self-study. Written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in statistics and mathematics, practising statisticians, engineers, climatologists, economists, and biologists.

Book Tables for the Use of Range and Studentized Range in Tests of Hypotheses

Download or read book Tables for the Use of Range and Studentized Range in Tests of Hypotheses written by H. Leon Harter and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-10-27 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion volume to the authors' previous well-received work, the CRC Handbook of Tables for the Use of Order Statistics in Estimation, this handbook discusses testing whether a hypothesis is true or false. Together, these volumes are your complete reference to theory and important tables relating to order statistics and their applications. Once a researcher completes an experiment, the resulting data is assumed to have come from a normal distribution with its mean and variance unknown. The researcher is then presented with a hypothesis testing problem. The use of order statistics and related functions offers a simple, powerful, and interesting approach to solving this problem. This volume presents an introduction to the use of order statistics and explains the various problems and their applications. The role of order statistics in solving these problems is examined, several important statistics are introduced, and their use in addressing testing of hypothesis problems is highlighted. The book also includes numerous tables that facilitate the methods of hypothesis testing using order statistics. Examples are given of the use of these tables in multiple comparison tests, with attention to error rates and sample sizes, and in the analog range of analysis of variance.

Book New Developments in Applied Statistics Research

Download or read book New Developments in Applied Statistics Research written by Mohammad Ahsanullah and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers have taken a permanent place in almost every human endeavor in the last 20 years. This infiltration requires a learning process on the part of the people utilising them and realising where and how they can be best used beyond the basic and obvious applications. Statistics is an example of their application in many diverse fields to reach conclusions and make projections never before possible. Beyond this, applied statistics is rapidly becoming not only an instrument, but an integral part of the advance of knowledge. There are many fields such as medicine, biology, weather prediction, military planning, and many others where the statistical studies are essential before the next step can be taken. This book presents recent research in the field from around the globe.

Download or read book The Analysis of Variance written by Hardeo Sahai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of variance (ANOYA) models have become one of the most widely used tools of modern statistics for analyzing multifactor data. The ANOYA models provide versatile statistical tools for studying the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. The ANOYA mod els are employed to determine whether different variables interact and which factors or factor combinations are most important. They are appealing because they provide a conceptually simple technique for investigating statistical rela tionships among different independent variables known as factors. Currently there are several texts and monographs available on the sub ject. However, some of them such as those of Scheffe (1959) and Fisher and McDonald (1978), are written for mathematically advanced readers, requiring a good background in calculus, matrix algebra, and statistical theory; whereas others such as Guenther (1964), Huitson (1971), and Dunn and Clark (1987), although they assume only a background in elementary algebra and statistics, treat the subject somewhat scantily and provide only a superficial discussion of the random and mixed effects analysis of variance.
