Book The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described

Download or read book The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described written by Adrian Fortescue and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book, a classic guide to the celebration of the Church's ancient Gregorian Rite in the English-speaking world, will serve priests and seminarians of the twenty-first century-just as it served so many priests of the twentieth-in their pastoral mission, which now necessarily includes familiarity with and openness to the use of the older form of the sacred liturgy. I happily commend it to the clergy, seminarians and laity as a reliable tool for the preparation and celebration of the liturgical rites authoritatively granted by the Holy Father in Summorum Pontificum. 'I congratulate the distinguished liturgical scholar, Dr. Alcuin Reid, for his care and precision in ensuring that this revised edition conforms to the latest authoritative decisions with regard to these liturgical rites. As Pope Benedict XVI wrote in his letter which accompanied Summorum Pontificum: "In the history of the liturgy there is growth and progress, but no rupture." The Gregorian Rite is today a living liturgical rite which will continue its progress without losing any of its riches handed on in tradition. For as the Holy Father continued, "What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful. It behoves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church's faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place." May this book assist the Church of today and of tomorrow in realising Pope Benedict's vision.' Darío Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos President, Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei This fifteenth edition, revised in the light of Pope Benedict XVI's reforms and expanded and corrected throughout, includes a new chapter on the music of solemn and sung Mass as well as clarifications of questions that have arisen in the light of recent experience. It gives descriptions of the rites of pontifical, solemn and low Mass, Vespers, the liturgical year including Holy Week, the sacraments, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, funerals, episcopal visitation and more.

Book Women s Ordination in the Catholic Church

Download or read book Women s Ordination in the Catholic Church written by John O'Brien and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's Ordination in the Catholic Church argues that women can be validly ordained to ministerial office. O'Brien shows that claims by Roman dicasteries for an unbroken chain of authoritative tradition on the non-ordainability of women--a novel rather than traditional argument--are not historically supported. In the primitive Church, with the offices of deacon, presbyter, and bishop in process of development, women exercised ministries later understood as pertaining to those offices. The sub-apostolic period downplayed women's ministry for reasons of cultural adaptation, not because it was thought that fidelity to Christ required it. Furthermore, extensive epigraphical evidence, from a wide geographical area, references women deacons and presbyters during the first millennium. Restrictive developments in the concept of ordination from the twelfth century onwards do not negate how, before that, women were validly ordained according to contemporary ecclesial understanding. Repeated canonical prohibitions on ordaining women show both that women were being ordained and how those bans were very selectively implemented. These canons were a cultural practice in search of a theology, and the subsequent theological justifications for restricting ordination to men appealed to supposed female inferiority against the background of priesthood as eminence rather than service. O'Brien shows that the assertion of women's non-ordainability is a matter of canon law rather than doctrine. As such, that law can be reformed.

Book The Ritual Culture of Victorian Professionals

Download or read book The Ritual Culture of Victorian Professionals written by Albert D. Pionke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the middle decades of the nineteenth century, Albert D. Pionke's book historicizes the relationship of ritual, class, and public status in Victorian England. His analysis of various discourses related to professionalization suggests that public ritual flourished during the period, especially among the burgeoning ranks of Victorian professions. As Pionke shows, magazines, court cases, law books, manuals, and works by authors that include William Makepeace Thackeray, Thomas Hughes, Anthony Trollope, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning demonstrate the importance of ritual in numerous professional settings. Individual chapters reconstruct the ritual cultures of pre-professionalism provided to Oxbridge undergraduates; of oath-taking in a wide range of professional creation and promotion ceremonies; of the education, promotion, and public practice of Victorian barristers; and of Victorian Parliamentary elections. A final chapter considers the consequences of rituals that fail through the lens of the Eglinton tournament. The uneasy place of Victorian writers, who were both promoters of and competitors with more established professionals, is considered throughout. Pionke's book excavates Victorian professionals' vital ritual culture, at the same time that its engagement with literary representations of the professions reconstructs writers' unique place in the zero-sum contest for professional status.

Book excerpt: Beginning in 1997, the work of translating these rituals was a daunting task as no one had previously delved into the Vatican Archives, (especially with permission) and been able to translate some of the earliest text from their original languages, then make sure the proper context is applied to bring it into the modern English language platform. Countless hours were spent researching, compiling, and then translating from Aramaic, Egyptian, and even Greek, Then double checking them behind the direct Latin to English translations. Over the course of time the research found the rights and blessings for every Church condoned action, such as.... - Blessings for Radio Stations and even Aircraft - The blessings for anything classed as "Holy" - Blessings for everyday items, such as breads, fire AND EVEN BEER! - The full rite of EXORCISM! No edits and all of the parts Hollywood leaves out when doing a film! No other version of the Roman Rituals has ever been presented so complete and full.

Book Military Orders in the Early Modern Portuguese World

Download or read book Military Orders in the Early Modern Portuguese World written by Francis A. Dutra and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries, the three Portuguese military orders of Christ, Santiago and Avis became that kingdom's most important institutions for rewarding services to the Crown. Membership in these military orders was highly prized as status symbols and because of the orders' "purity of blood" statutes, these knighthoods were more highly esteemed than mere patents of nobility, especially since such knighthoods automatically ennobled. Francis A. Dutra has written widely on the Portuguese military orders of Christ, Santiago and Avis - a topic generally neglected by students of early modern Portugal. This volume brings together a selection of his pioneering essays. Based extensively on archival research, they reflect his special interest in social mobility and use of the knighthoods for patronage, while particular sections focus on the role of the orders in the Portuguese maritime expansion and in India and Brazil, and on the medical profession. The collection includes English translations of four studies that originally appeared in Portuguese, as well as a detailed index, in itself a useful research tool.

Book Chicano Professionals

Download or read book Chicano Professionals written by Tamis Hoover Renteria and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-12 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. Writing about Chicano professionals in Los Angeles proves timely for many reasons. Anthropologists now venture into the ethnic borderlands of their own western countries rather than encroach on the flexing ethnicities of the third world as they have traditionally done. The story of this ethnic elite begins in the 1960’s and 1970’s when Mexican American students from blue-collar backgrounds first entered California colleges and universities in significant numbers. This generation of Mexican American students is important, however, not merely for its increased numbers, but rather for the culture it created, the culture of "Chicanismo", the culture of the nationalist Chicano Movement.
