Book The Order of the Causes of Salvation and Damnation

Download or read book The Order of the Causes of Salvation and Damnation written by William Perkins and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was first published as “A Golden Chain, or A Description of Theology Containing the Order of the Causes of Salvation and Damnation.” Perkins covers who God is, His works in predestination and reprobation concerning fallen men, and what God requires of all men, including His church. This work is a unique systematic theology of sorts that mines out of the Bible a mountain of theological gold which Perkins forges into an unbreakable “Golden Chain” of salvation. It is focused on the work of Jesus Christ as God’s one and only Son and Redeemer, and God’s eternal redemptive plan found in the Covenant of Grace. This is a classic work not to be missed; and has been updated for the modern reader. This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book The Reformed Apprentice A Workbook on Reformed Theology

Download or read book The Reformed Apprentice A Workbook on Reformed Theology written by C. Matthew McMahon and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing like this interactive workbook anywhere in the Reformed community. It is a unique workbook designed to bring Reformed Theology to students of the bible in its various facets. In old England, an apprentice is a novice who engaged in a covenant with a tradesman to learn a particular trade. A workbook of this kind was created to engage the student of scripture to be apprenticed under the teachers of Reformed Theology, thus, a Reformed Apprentice. The purpose of the workbook is to come into a deeper knowledge and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ as he has revealed himself to the church in his Word and by his Spirit through the centuries in Reformed Theology. The workbook covers logic, hermeneutics, theology, creeds and confessions, covenant theology, worship, the sovereignty of God, the solas of the reformation, the doctrines of grace, church government, and much, much more. It extensively quotes the early church fathers, the Reformers, the Puritans, and Reformed theologians from various ages in order to aid the Reformed Apprentice in coming to a knowledge of what truly constitutes Reformed Theology and the Reformed Faith. This workbook is not to be completed in a short timeframe, nor is it governed by a specific amount of time. The Reformed Apprentice has as much time to complete each section at their own pace as they need in order to walk more closely with Jesus Christ.

Book Histories that Mansoul and Her Wars Anatomize

Download or read book Histories that Mansoul and Her Wars Anatomize written by Robert J. McKelvey and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert McKelvey argues that John Bunyan wrote The Holy War as a warfare allegory symbolizing the salvation history of Scripture from a Calvinistic-covenantal perspective. In this cosmic drama of redemption, the "Histories That Mansoul, and her Wars Anatomize" include the individual-soteric-microcosmic level or ordo salutis unfolding analogous to the redemptive-historical-macrocosmic level or historia salutis. The eternal covenant of redemption provides the foundation for this history of salvation, which progresses from creation to the anticipation of consummation. This scheme finds its roots in the Puritan philosophy of "universal history" which sees all historical events serving God's redemptive purposes. The individual, through union with Christ founded on election, participates in the drama by inclusion within the trans-historical covenant of grace. As a depiction of cosmic war, The Holy War sets forth the enmity between the church and Antichrist, which is representative of the greater battle between Christ and the devil from Genesis to Revelation. As a pastoral guide to persecuted saints, Bunyan retrospectively rehearses the history of redemption to grant comfort. In addition, he prospectively reveals the consummation of redemption to encourage perseverance and instil eschatological hope. This thesis is substantiated contextually through Bunyan's life and writings, historiographically by surveying the history of Holy War interpretation, pre-textually by examining the introduction to the allegory, and textually by analyzing the allegory itself.

The first is A Golden Chain , which treats the main points of theology with an emphasis on “the order of the causes of salvation and damnation.” The second is A Christian and Plain Treatise of the Manner and Order of Predestination , which gives a strident defense of the sovereignty of God in election and reprobation. Book The Rhetoric of Religion

Download or read book The Rhetoric of Religion written by Kenneth Burke and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1970-04 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "But the point of Burke's work, and the significance of his achievement, is not that he points out that religion and language affect each other, for this has been said before, but that he proceeds to demonstrate how this is so by reference to a specific symbolic context. After a discussion 'On Words and The Word,' he analysess verbal action in St. Augustine's Confessions. He then discusses the first three chapters of Genesis, and ends with a brilliant and profound 'Prologue in Heaven,' an imaginary dialogue between the Lord and Satan in which he proposes that we begin our study of human motives with complex theories of transcendence,' rather than with terminologies developed in the use of simplified laboratory equipment. . . . Burke now feels, after some forty years of search, that he has created a model of the symbolic act which breaks through the rigidities of the 'sacred-secular' dichotomy, and at the same time shows us how we get from secular and sacred realms of action over the bridge of language. . . . Religious systems are systems of action based on communication in society. They are great social dramas which are played out on earth before an ultimate audience, God. But where theology confronts the developed cosmological drama in the 'grand style,' that is, as a fully developed cosmological drama for its religious content, the 'logologer' can be further studied not directly as knowledge but as anecdotes that help reveal for us the quandaries of human governance." --Hugh Dalziel Duncan from Critical Responses to Kenneth Burke, 1924 - 1966, edited by William H. Rueckert (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1969).
