Book excerpt: The island of Crete is in the Mediterranean Sea. It is 5th in size in the Mediterranean after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica, and is the largest of the Greek islands. It lies in the part of the Mediterranean Sea designated the Aegean Sea, between Greece and Turkey. The island has an elongated shape, 260 km (160 mi) from east to west, is 60 km (37 mi) at its widest point and narrows to as little as 12 km (7.5 mi) (close to Lerapetra). It is a mountainous island with three mountain ranges, the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) to the west, centrally the Idi Range and to the east Mount Kedros and the Dikti Mountain Range. These mountains give rise to valleys, plateaus and gorges. For lovers of wildflowers the island is well worth visiting. The island has a massive flora (over 2000 species) and a large number of endemic species (over 160 species). There are a large number of species of wild orchid on the island, the island being particularly rich in species. Counts are very variable depending on inclusion or not of subspecies. Some reports give an orchid count of about 100 species, including a number of endemic species. Birds are well represented and there are a number of butterflies to be seen. The palm forest of Vai in eastern Crete is the largest natural palm forest in Europe with Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrasti). The appearance of orchids in any one botanical site is very variable. One year a particular site may have an enormous number of a species and the flowing year none may appear. Identification of orchids at the species level is not always easy due to hybridisation or close characteristics. A good example of such difficulty is with the Serapias genus of orchids where the genus identity is easy but defining the species may be impossible. There have been many changes in naming of the Orchidaceae, in genus names and species along with a multitude of subspecies. Often the present naming is loosely applied with just genus and subspecies names being used, genus and species being used or genus, species and subspecies being used. Similarly, of course the common names vary from place to place. This situation is particularly so in the case of the genus Ophrys where there have been many name changes.

Book excerpt: The prize-winning history of the orchid: “an engaging and enlightening account of one of the Earth's most mythologized botanical wonders” (Richard Conniff, author of House of Lost Worlds). At once delicate, exotic, and elegant, orchids are beloved for their singular, instantly recognizable beauty. Found in nearly every climate, the many species of orchid have had varying forms of significance in countless cultures over time. Following the orchid’s journey from Ancient Greek medicine to twentieth century detective novels, science historian Jim Endersby explores the flower’s four recurring themes: science, empire, sex, and death. Orchids were a symbol of the exotic riches sought by 19th century Europeans in their plans for colonization. They became subjects of scientific scrutiny for Charles Darwin, who investigated their methods of cross-pollination. As Endersby shows, orchids—perhaps because of their extraordinarily diverse colors, shapes, and sizes—have also bloomed repeatedly in films, novels, plays, and poems, from Shakespeare to science fiction. Featuring many gorgeous illustrations from the collection of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Orchid: A Cultural History was awarded the Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize by the History of Science Society. It is an enchanting tale not only for gardeners and plant collectors, but anyone curious about the flower’s obsessive hold on the imagination in history, cinema, literature, and more.
