Download or read book Orators of Modern Europe Classic Reprint written by Guy Carleton Lee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orators of Modern Europe The orations have been selected with a view to the illustration of the oratory of the Latin and Teutonic peoples considered as races rather than as subdivided nations. The limitation of space has caused the omission of several orators valuable for the beauty of their diction, but the general style in which they spoke is thought to be most thoroughly exemplified by the expositions given. Book The Greek Orators Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Greek Orators Classic Reprint written by J. F. Dobson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Orators HE object of this book is to provide a reasonably short account of the works of the Orators and to give a general idea of the style of each.' It seemed to me at the outset that this object could be best attained, not by applying methods of scientific analysis, but by giving numerous quotations from the speeches to emphasise the points which I wished to bring out. I have therefore avoided as far as possible the techni calities of criticism, and illustrated my remarks by translations of characteristic passages, hoping thus to make my work easily accessible not only to classical students, but also to others who, while generally interested in the Classics, have not the time or the capacity to study them in the original. Book Famous Speeches

Download or read book Famous Speeches written by Herbert Paul and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Speeches: Selected and Edited, With Introductory Notes That speaking has for some time tended to become more practical few would dispute. But there may be quite as much art in practical Speaking as in any other. An argument may be put in an almost infinite variety of ways, and yet there must always be a way which is best suited to a particular audience at a given time and place. Now that the habit of public speaking is more widely diffused than it ever was before, it is natural that variety Of methods Should also multiply. Comparison will Show how different are the modes of explana tion and illustration, of attack and defence, to which modern orators have recourse. One thing, however, is clearly dis cernible in most modern speeches, and that is what may be called their comparative concentration. Speaking is far less discursive than it was in times of ampler leisure and fewer subjects of dispute. Facts and reasons play a much larger part than rhetoric and eloquence in modern addresses, what ever the general purport of the remarks may be. SO much depends upon the temperament of the individual speaker that it is impossible to describe the character of modern oratory in a phrase or a formula. One may Observe, however, that the mental habit of assuming agreement rather than opposition, of stimulating friends rather than answering opponents, has become familiar to the contemporary politician. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Orators, Vol. 2: Comprising the Great Orations of the World's History, With Introductory Essays, Biographical Sketches and Critical Notes The Editors of this volume have endeavored to present such examples of Ancient Roman Oratory as may best illustrate its development and may make good its claim to a foremost place among the oratorical systems of the world. The scope of the selection covers that portion of the history of Roman oratory that begins with its first authentic recorded speech and ends with the close of the Panegyrical school. In covering this wide field, speeches attributed to the earliest Roman orators have been taken from the pages of the historians, examples have been chosen from the works of the rhetoricians, and orations have been selected from those works that have been preserved unaltered. Book Cicero Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cicero Classic Reprint written by William Lucas Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cicero In one respect, the times of Cicero, in spite of their complicated politics, Should have more interest for a modern reader than most of what is called Ancient History. Forget the date but for a moment, and there is scarcely anything ancient about them. The scenes and actors are modern - terribly modern; far more so than the middle ages of Christendom. Be tween the times of our own Plantagenets and Georges, for instance, there is a far wider gap, in all but years, than between the consulships of Caesar and Napoleon. The habits of life, the ways of thinking, the family affections, the tastes of the Romans of Cicero's day, were in many respects wonderfully like our own the political jealousies and rivalries have repeated them selves again and again in the last two or three centuries of Europe their code of political honour and morality, debased as it was, was not much lower than that which was held by some great statesmen a generation or two before us. Let us be thankful if the most frightful of their vices were the exclusive shame of paganism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Agricola and the Germania 100 Copy Collector s Edition

Download or read book The Agricola and the Germania 100 Copy Collector s Edition written by Tacitus and published by Royal Classics. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Agricola and the Germania were written by the Roman historian Tacitus around 98 AD. The Germania describes the lands, laws, and customs of individual Germanic tribes. The Agricola, recounts the life of Tacitus' father-in-law Gnaeus Julius Agricola, an eminent Roman general and Governor of Britain. It also covers, briefly, the geography and ethnography of ancient Britain. As in the Germania, Tacitus favorably contrasts the liberty of the native Britons to the corruption and tyranny of the Empire; the book also contains eloquent and forceful polemics against the rapacity and greed of Rome. Tacitus's writings are known for their dense prose that seldom glosses the facts, in contrast to the style of some of his contemporaries. In most of his writings he keeps to a chronological narrative order, only seldom outlining the bigger picture, leaving the readers to construct that picture for themselves. Tacitus's historical style offers penetrating--often pessimistic--insights into the psychology of power politics, blending straightforward descriptions of events, moral lessons, and tightly focused dramatic accounts. This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.

Book The Reception of John Chrysostom in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book The Reception of John Chrysostom in Early Modern Europe written by Sam Kennerley and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reception of John Chrysostom in Early Modern Europe explores when, how, why, and by whom one of the most influential Fathers of the Greek Church was translated and read during a particularly significant period in the reception of his works. This was the period between the first Neo-Latin translation of Chrysostom in 1417 and the final volume of Fronton du Duc’s Greek-Latin edition in 1624, years in which readers and translators from Renaissance Italy, the Byzantine Empire, and the Basel, Paris, and Rome of a newly-confessionalised Europe found in Chrysostom everything from a guide to Latin oratory, to a model interpreter of Paul. By drawing on evidence that ranges from Greek manuscripts to conciliar acts, this book contextualises the hundreds of translations and editions of Chrysostom that were produced in Europe between 1417 and 1624, while demonstrating the lasting impact of these works on scholarship about this Church Father today.
