Yet even the omitted portions have been summarized for the reader, whenever they have seemed to bear upon the main argument. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For the Oracles of God, Four Orations: For Judgment to Come, an Argument, in Nine Parts Beyond the/sermon, of which the very name hath learned to inspire drowsiness and tedium; the other after the manner of the ancient Apolo gies, with this difference, that it is pleaded, not before any judicial bar, but before the tribunal of human thought and feeling. The former are but Specimens; the latter, though most imper fect, is intended to be complete. The Orations are placed first in the volume, because the Ora cles of God, which they exalt, are the founda tion of the Argument, which brings to reason and common feeling one of the revelations which they contain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For the Oracles of God, Four Orations, Vol. 1 of 9: For Judgment to Come, an Argument, in Nine Parts IT hath appeared to the Author of this book, from more than ten years' meditation upon the subject, that the chief obstacle to the progress of divine truth over the minds of men, is the want of its being properly presented to them. In this Christian country there are, perhaps, nine-tenths of every class whoknow nothing at all about the applications and advantages of the single truths of te velation, or of revelation taken as a whole; and what they do not know, they cannot be expected to reverence or obey. This ignorance, in both the higher and the lower orders of Religion, as a discerner of the thoughts and in tentions of the heart, is not so much due to the want of inquisitiveness on their part, as to the want of a sedu lous and skilful ministry on the part of those to whom it is entrusted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and Platform: Being Discourses, Arguments and Orations Kind Reader: These essays, published at different times, in Europe and America, I have now collected together for your use and entertainment. I have few hopes of public applause, and certainly no dread of opposition. The discourse on Christian Union raised against me a storm as unlooked for as it was unmerciful. I was little aware while writing it, that in striking at the creed I was awaking a very demon of bigotry and intolerance. An extreme partiality of friends evinced itself by putting this discourse without my connivance, into the corner stone of the Meeting-house of the Second Baptist Church of Trenton, and the undying enmity of opposers, has since descended even to the mean work of digging up that corner stone for the purpose of taking away the obnoxious document. Spirit of intolerance, you may dig on!!! The spade, the axe, the faggot, and the rack are more congenial weapons to you than reason or revelation. Not with such instruments can the progress of free Bible enquiry by stopped. Almost every position taken in this volume was advocated amidst much opposition; but it is surely encouraging to find that public sentiment is steadily advancing in favor of light, liberty, and love. The main feature of this book is, doubtless, its relentless opposition to all despotism, political and religious. This indicates my true character, and without the tediousness of a biography, tells the tale of the sacrifices I have made, the opposition I have encountered, and my present religious position. The world, however, is moving on apace, and if I do not run too fast or die too soon, I may yet hope to be overtaken by public approbation. Meantime, kind reader, I hope you will profit by all the good you find in this book and throw the bad away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Speeches by Great Lawyers: A Collection of Arguments and Speeches, Before Courts and Juries Introductory Notes, Analyses, Etc Much valuable information can be acquired from arguments upon which learned counsel have spent weeks and months of thought and labor, revealing, in some instances, the results of a lifetime of study and research - information of incalculable practical value to lawyers in the active practice of their profession. Great profit will also be derived from studying the plan which successful advocates have pursued in presenting a cause to the court or jury; and the manner in which they have arranged and woven their materials, so as to persuade the will, excite the sympathies, or convince the judgment. Care has been taken to give the speeches or arguments in full, omitting only detailed statements of evidence of no general inter est, whenever such omission could be made without disturbing the plan and harmony of the argument. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orations and Speeches, Vol. 1 of 2 Certainly, if all who look upon themselves as men, not so much from the shape of their bodies as because they are endowed with reason, would listen awhile unto Christ's wholesome and peaceable decrees, and not, puffed up with arrogance and conceit, rather believe their own opinions than his admonitions, the whole world long ago (turning the use of iron into milder works) should have lived in most quiet tranquillity, and have met together in a firm and indissoluble league of most safe concord. - Arnonius Afer, Adversus Gentes, Lib. I. c. 6. And so for the first time [three hundred years after the Christian era] the meek and peaceful Jesus became a God of Battle, and the cross, the holy sign of Christian redemption, a banner of bloody strife. This irreconcilable incongruity between the symbol of universal peace and the horrors of war, in my judgment, is conclusive against the miraculous or supernatural character of the transaction [the vision of Constantine]. - I was agreeably surprised to find that Mosheim concurred in these sentiments, for which I will readily encounter the charge of Quakerism. - Milman, History of Christianity, Book III. chap. 1. When you see fighting, be peaceable; for a peaceable disposition shuts the door of contention. Oppose kindness to perverseness; the sharp sword will not cut soft silk. By using sweet words and gentleness you may lead an elephant with a hair. - Saadi, The Gulistan, translated by Francis Gladwin, Chap. III. Tale 28. Download or read book Speeches and Forensic Arguments Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Daniel Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Forensic Arguments, Vol. 2 The position which Mr. Webster fills in the eyes of the country, by this general consent, is the more honorable to him, when it is recollected that it is the victory gained by talent, wholly unaided by those advantages of opportunity, which, to other men, have given official standing, influence, and political power. Mr. Webster came forward at a period'when that ascendency, which New England possessed from the early settlement of the colonies, and which was strengthened by her agency in the great triumphs of the revolution, had passed away. Other portions of the country had grown up the West was settled; the Virginian dynasty was in undisputed possession of the public favor; and new centres of political influ ence had been established, in which New England was allowed to have no share. Had he been a foreigner, barely naturalized, he would have come forward with less prejudice than as a New Eng lander of talent and promise; At the early age of thirty, and without preliminary training in the state assemblies, he rose at once, in the Congress of 1812, to an undisputed eminence; and it was said of him, even then, by one of the very few who could have dis puted his rank, (mr. Lowndes, ) that the North had not his equal, nor the South his superior. What might not have been his career, had he sprung from the other side of the Potomac! He would have succeeded Mr. Monroe, as inevitably as sunrise succeeds the dawn, and would have been thought to sustain, with increased lustre, the line of the great men of Virginia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Orations of Paul: Introduction and Comments on Text It must be admitted that in rhetorical effect, this address is not equal to some others which Luke reports in some de tail; but it is of marked interest as the first statement of any length in Paul's own words in defense of the Christian faith. It is a cogent argument moreover to the Jews in support of the Messiah ship of Jesus; he says, We declare unto you glad tidings how that the promise that was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children. Paul also gives strong em phasis to one of the cardinal points in the Christian faith - the resurrection of Jesus, fully attested to by a large group of disciples who are his witnesses. Book Orations Vol 15 of 25

Download or read book Orations Vol 15 of 25 written by Mayo Williamson Hazeltine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orations, Vol. 15 of 25: From Homer to William McKinley The distinction which your association has earned is, how ever, the least of its honors. The good which it has done in stimulating inquiry, concentrating opinion and combining efforts toward the improvement of the law and the education and health of the people would be a sufficient reward for all your labors even if no distinction had been obtained. The scope of your labors is not confined to your own coun try; it extends to every part of Christendom. So intimate is now the connection between all Christian nations that the social progress of one is sure to be felt more or less in the others. More especially is this true of your country and mine. We are bound together by so many ties that, forgetting for the present all things else, I will only think of the good we may do each other and the spirit of kindliness we may both pro mote. The particular subject to which I am to bespeak your at tention is international law. In discoursing of it my purpose will be to answer, so far as I may be able, these questions: 1. What is that which is called international law? 2. Who made it? 3. Who enforce it? 4. Are any changes in it de sirable? 5. If so, how can they be effected? Book Orations Addresses and Speeches of Chauncey M Depew Vol 7 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Orations Addresses and Speeches of Chauncey M Depew Vol 7 Classic Reprint written by Chauncey Mitchell DePew and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orations, Addresses and Speeches of Chauncey M. Depew, Vol. 7 Nothing is more difficult than to engage the attention of the Senate by what is called "oratory"; yet Senator Depew never fails of an appreciative hearing - and this, too, regardless of whether Senators agree or disagree with him. It is easy to understand how a natural orator like Senator Depew could captivate an audience of men and women who only occasionally hear a public address by a distinguished man. But the Senate hears speeches all the time - some of them very unusual and a few of them really notable. Then, too, most Senators are themselves public speakers of long experience; but most important of all, each of them is exceedingly busy with the details of legislation - the drafting of bills, the studying of precedents, the examination of authorities, the hearing of those who favor or oppose measures before their respective committees. All these things and many more naturally and properly make the Senate uncommonly indifferent to speech making. So it is that there can be no higher tribute to a man's powers as an orator than when his fellow Senators shed their blase indifference, cease for awhile their engrossing work and listen with interest to an oration of a fellow Senator. That is what the Senate always does when Chauncey M. Depew speaks. His Senate oratory is quite unique. Perhaps his engaging personality, a sort of magnetism of geniality, is the foundation. This, of course, is aided by his voice which has a ringing quality that stirs and arouses, curiously modified by a soothing timbre which pleases and mollifies. There is a strange aggressiveness of good nature in his whole manner. These things from the very beginning of his oration tend to make the situation easy; but of course that would amount to nothing were it not for what he says. He speaks to the point. He develops his theme with logical precision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches, Arguments, Addresses, and Letters of Clement L. Vallandigham The maternal family of Mr. Vallandigham (pronounced Vallan'digham) is Scotch-Irish, his grandfather, James Laird, having been born in the county Down, north Ireland. His mother, Rebecca Laird, was born on the Susquehanna, in York county, Pennsylvania, and still survives at the age of seventy-five, residing in New Lisbon, Ohio. She had two brothers, Episcopal clergymen, and one a member of the bar, John Laird, who died in 1824, while an Ohio State Senator from Columbiana county. She is a woman of superior intellect, strong will, and much force of character, and of singular piety. Mr. Vallandigham's paternal ancestors were Flemings, the name being originally Van Landeghem. One of that name was one of the four most distinguished Flemish knights at the battle of "the Golden Spurs," fought by the "Lion of Flanders," near Courtrai, in 1302. There is still a village, Landeghem by name, near Ghent, in East Flanders. In the reign of Louis XIV. they were French Protestants, or "Huguenots." Michael Van Landeghem emigrated to Virginia previous to the year 1690, an exile for religious opinion's sake, and settled in what was then Northumberland county. He became a considerable land-owner in that and the adjoining counties. His son Michael was born in the same county, in 1705, but died in Fairfax county, not many miles from the now classic stream of "Bull Run," where his son George Vallandigham (the spelling of the name being now changed) was born about 1736. He studied law in Prince George county, Maryland, where be married a daughter of Colonel Joseph Noble, whose mother's name was Dent (of English descent, and one of the oldest families in the State); and about 1773 removed to what was then Youghiogheny county, Virginia, near Pittsburg; where his second son, Clement, was born in 1778. About the time of his migration West, the "Logan War" with the Ohio Indians, broke out; and from that time till Wayne's victory, in 1794, Colonel Vallandigham was obliged, with a brief interval now and then, to lay aside his Blackstone for the rifle or the sword. He marched as an officer under Lord Dunmore, the last colonial Governor of Virginia, in his expedition, in 1774, against the Chillicothe Towns.
