Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oration in Honor of Universal Emancipation in the British Empire, Delivered at South Reading, August First, 1834 Next to doing good and great actions ourselves, the best thing is to appreciate them duly when done by others. A frank commendation of goodness affords a strong presumption of a wish to imitate it. We participate the glory which we celebrate. On the other hand, self-praise is real reproach, and a man's true worth will commonly be found to be inversely as his own vauntings. No merit is so great that vanity cannot debase it, and none so little that humility may not exalt it. Our assem bling together at this time, if we are actuated by the spirit which the occasion supposes and demands, cannot fail to be profitable in every view. It is an occasion of self-examination, not of self-applause; of commemorating a great civil achieve ment of another nation, not the military or political glory of our own of serious and humble preparation for following, not of self-complacent pride for setting, a noble example. The act of the British Parliament, and we may add in this case with peculiar emphasis, of the British nation, passed on the 28th day of August, 1833, to take effect ON this first day of August, 1834, enfranchises West India slaves, and confers for the first time the full fruition of civil rights upon West India freemen. It is an event sublime in its nature, comprehensive and mighty in its immediate influence and remote consequences, precious beyond expression to the cause of freedom, and encouraging beyond any measure of any government on earth to the hearts of all enlightened and just men. Angels have more joy for this than for the lost, found. They hold celestial jubilee for the stolen, restored, for him who stole, but shall steal no more, for the sons of God, their brethren which were dead, and are now alive again.' Book The Problem of Emancipation

Download or read book The Problem of Emancipation written by Edward Bartlett Rugemer and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A most persuasive work that repositions the American debates over emancipation where they clearly belong, in a broader Anglo-Atlantic context." -- Reviews in History While many historians look to internal conflict alone to explain the onset of the American Civil War, in The Problem of Emancipation, Edward Bartlett Rugemer places the origins of the war in a transatlantic context. Addressing a huge gap in the historiography of the antebellum United States, he explores the impact of Britain's abolition of slavery in 1834 on the coming of the war and reveals the strong influence of Britain's old Atlantic empire on the United States' politics. He demonstrates how American slaveholders and abolitionists alike borrowed from the antislavery movement developing on the transatlantic stage to fashion contradictory portrayals of abolition that became central to the arguments for and against American slavery. Richly researched and skillfully argued, The Problem of Emancipation explores a long-neglected aspect of American slavery and the history of the Atlantic World and bridges a gap in our understanding of the American Civil War. "Most discussions about the roots of the American Civil War seldom stray beyond the nation's borders, but Rugemer makes a persuasive case for why that should change." -- Charleston (SC) Post and Courier "A tremendous contribution to the greatest issue and ongoing controversy in pre--twentieth-century American historiography: the causes of the American Civil War. I was quite unprepared for Rugemer's crucial discoveries as he studied the way dozens of southern and northern newspapers responded to the British West Indian slave insurrections, to the British act of emancipation, and to the consequences of this so-called Mighty Experiment. Few historians have shown such sophistication in analyzing the rapidly changing pre--Civil War media and the shifts in public opinion." -- David Brion Davis, author of Inhuman Bondage: The Rise and Fall of Slavery in the New World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emancipation Oration One year after the immortal Lincoln had promulgated the Proclamation of Freedom, a most remarkable spectacle was seen in the City of Washington. The President's recep tion on New Year's Day had heretofore been exclusively allotted to meet white citizens in the executive mansion. The appearance of colored persons was an event that surprised and provoked the multitude of negro-haters, who crowd the doors on such an occasion. The people waited until the num ber of white visitors diminished, then they strengthened their resolution and made bold to enter the hall. Some of them were richly dressed, while others wore the garb of poverty, but alike intent on seeing the man who had set our people free. They pressed forward until they beheld the stately form of the President. An eye-witness says For nearly two hours Mr. Lincoln had been shaking the hands of the 'sovereigns, ' and had become excessively weary, and his grasp became languid but here his nerves rallied at the unwonted sight, and he welcomed this motley crowd with a heartiness that made them wild with exceeding joy. They laughed and wept, and wept and laughed, exclaiming through their blind ing tears, God bless you!' God bless you, Abraham Lin coln!' God bress Massa Linkum!' We have not forgotten the sensation caused by the first sound from Sumter, when enthusiasm blazed high and bright; when bells rang out and flags waved, and the people rose as one man to cheer on the troops. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse, Delivered at Montpelier, October 17, 1834: Before the Vermont Colonization Society Here the object is distinctly stated, namely, to promote and execute a plan for colonizing, with their consent, the free people: of color residing in our country. There can then be no mistake On this point. This object, when it became understood, commended itself to some of the wi sest, and best, and most influential men of the nation. Un doubtedly some patronized it from good, and some from bad motives; some, because they thought they could see in it the sure, but effectual means for ridding the coun try of slavery; and others, because they thought that by ridding the slave holding States of the free blacks, it would render slaves more valuable. It was, at the time this Society was formed, supposed that the free people of color generally would be pleased to emigrate to Africa, as their father-land; that, escaping from the disabilities under which they labored here, they would successfully emulate the whites in their devotion to learning, civil polity, and the arts; that the Colony, pat ronized by the General Government, would help to destroy the traffic in slaves, which Was still carried on upon the coast; and that it would exert a salutary influence upon Africa by the introduction of civilization and Christianity into those barbarous regions. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oration, Delivered Before the Few and Phi Gamma Socities, of Emory College It is objected that our slaves are debarred educational advantages. The objection is well taken, but is without great force their station m society makes education neither necessary nor useful, besides it comes with a bad grace from England - eight-tenths of whose pooulation have been de barred them by causes stronger than law, and if they could by any means obtain them, it is difficult to show the advantages of education to English laborers, who are doomed to toil twelve hours a day for a money compensation inadequate to supply their lowest physical wants. We are reproached that the marriage relation is neither recognised nor protected by law. This reproach is not wholly unjust, this is an evil not yet remedied by law, but marriage is not inconsistent with the institution of slavery as it exists among us, and the objection, therefore, lies rather to an incident than to the essence of the system. But even in this we have deprived the slave of no pre-existing right. We found the race without any knowledge of, or regard for the institution of marriage, and we are reproached for not having as yet, secured that and all other blessings of civilization. The separation of families is much relied on by the abolitionists in Europe and America. Some of the slaveholding states have already made partial provision against this evil, and all of them may do so; but the objection is far more formidable in theory than practice, even without legislative interposition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genius of Universal Emancipation, Vol. 2: October, 1882 There is an affecting picture of a portion of the miseries which slavery entails upon our sex, conveyed in the following paragraph from the Washington Spectator. The system of traffic to which it alludes, and men who are engaged in it, are the foulest blot that ever disgraced a country. It is no uncommon thing to see a young female slave, on ascertaining that she has been purchased by one of the merciless traders for the southern market, flying from house to house, endeavoring to sell herself for a higher price than that for which she has been bartered away, so that she may be able to satisfy the de mands of her rapacious purchaser, and live and die among her relations.
