Book True Stories

Download or read book True Stories written by Garrick Beck and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part memoir, part eyewitness history, part storytelling, this book takes you on a rollicksome ride through a generation of experiences. True Stories traces the evolution of a New World Culture from the Beatnik 1950s through the passions and protests and psychedelics of the 1960s, and onward into environmental and cross-cultural arts and political movements which today are thriving around the world. Told with humor and peppered with the authors philosophy, these stories take the reader to party with author Jack Kerouac, protest with the saintly Dorothy Day, and drop acid with Merry Prankster Ken Kesey. The history recounted here uncovers the origins of The Oregon Country Faire, the Rainbow Gatherings and the infamous Vortex Festival. The tales thread their way through the intimacies of Americas West Coast communes, caustic anti-Vietnam War protests, the beauty of creating community gardens in vacant city lots, and the untold tale of what really brought down the Soviet Union.

Book The Unspeakable Mother

Download or read book The Unspeakable Mother written by Deborah Kelly Kloepfer and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving back and forth between experience and language, The Unspeakable Mother operates out of the intersection of two perspectives: women's immersion in the mother/daughter dyad and the paradoxical absence of the mother in the daughter's discourse. Deborah Kelly Kloepfer calls attention to the repeated allusions to dead mothers, dying mothers, mad mothers, stepmothers, abortions, stillbirths, miscarriages, and infant death in the novels of Jean Rhys and the poems and prose of H.D. Drawing on American and French feminist theory, she suggests that Rhys, H.D., and other modernist women writers, rather than just characterizing women's experience, are encoding the mother in relation to language. The dead mother is a trope for textlessness, a trope that also serves to inscribe the repression of the female speaking/writing subject. Challenging a number of assumptions of critical discourse, in which the father traditionally functions as the guardian of the symbolic, Kloepfer shows how thematic violence toward the female body is accompanied by the rupturing of conventional language, an act that both reconstitutes the abandoned mother and turns the violence against the androcentric discourse that has denied her. In the work of both Rhys and H.D., Kloepfer uncovers a startling and unsettling incestuous language between mother and daughter which relies not only on the unspoken but on the unspeakable. Anyone interested in literary modernism will find The Unspeakable Mother fascinating reading, as will students and scholars in the fields of psychoanalytic criticism and feminist theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “stunning” (USA Today) debut novel brings to life World War II-era and modern-day Greece—and tells the story of a vibrant family and the tragic secret kept hidden for generations. Boston, 2000: Calliope Notaris Brown receives a shocking phone call. Her beloved uncle Nestor has passed away, and now Callie must fly to Patras, Greece, to claim her inheritance. Callie’s mother, Clio—with whom Callie has always had a difficult relationship—tries to convince her not to make the trip. Unsettled by her mother’s strange behavior, and uneasy about her own recent engagement, Callie decides to escape Boston for the city of her childhood summers. After arriving at the heady peak of Carnival, Callie begins to piece together what her mother has been trying to hide. Among Nestor’s belongings, she uncovers clues to a long-kept secret that will alter everything she knows about her mother’s past and about her own future. Greece, 1940: Growing up in Patras in a prosperous family, Clio Notaris and her siblings feel immune to the oncoming effects of World War II, yet the Italian occupation throws their privileged lives into turmoil. Summers in the country once spent idling in the clover fields are marked by air-raid drills; the celebration of Carnival, with its elaborate masquerade parties, is observed at home with costumes made from soldiers’ leftover silk parachutes. And as the war escalates, the events of one fateful evening will upend Clio’s future forever. A moving novel of the search for identity, the challenges of love, and the shared history that defines a family, The Clover House is a powerful debut from a distinctive and talented new writer.
