Book excerpt: The purpose of this new edition is to bring to readers in dental, speech, and oral myofunctional professions the most up-to-date awareness of what has happened, and is happening, in the field of orofacial myology throughout the world. In this volume, the information is intended for basic and intermediate levels. This expanded text also includes contributions from four continents and therapy suggestions from ten additional clinicians. Included are updated and expanded chapters on the scope of myofuntional disorders, history of myofunctional problems and treatment regimes, anatomy, physiology, speech, dentition, orthodontics, and diagnostic and treatment procedures. The authors' intent is to provide a wide scope of information within a framework of interdisciplinary interactions for those professionals whose work impacts individuals with myofunctional disorders. The considerable material on treatment includes theory, principles, approaches, instrumentation, and specific exercises and assignments. Considerable insights and principles from orthodontics are included throughout the text. New in this volume are explanations of the importance of the dental freeway spaces as a consideration in diagnosis and treatment. The authors recommend this text as a resource for learning about the background and state-of-the-art in the United States and internationally regarding the theory and practice of orofacial myology. The book will be of special interest to myofunctional clinicians, speech-language pathologists, dentists, and other interested professionals.

Book Facial Oral Tract Therapy F O T T

Download or read book Facial Oral Tract Therapy F O T T written by Ricki Nusser-Müller-Busch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a comprehensive approach to the assessment and treatment of disturbances in facial expression, oral movement, swallowing, breathing, voice and speech production caused by developmental and acquired neurological conditions. The principles outlined are used in patients with different etiologies (e.g. stroke, tumors, traumas). F.O.T. T., developed by Kay Coombes, is a hands-on approach based on an understanding of neurological functions and the way we learn from experience. The approach aims to give the patient experience of physiological posture and movement using facial-oral functions in normal activities of daily living (ADL). Rather than mere “exercises”, F.O.T.T involves meaningful activities aiming to promote participation, according to ICF criteria. Four main areas are covered: nutrition, oral hygiene, nonverbal communication and speech. Each chapter summarises the problems of severely ill patients and shows the clinical reasoning behind the solutions offered. Separate chapters discuss tracheostomy management and the training of the carers involved, including relatives. The chapter authors are experienced specialists (physio-, occupational- and speech-language therapists and physicians), whose contributions aim to provide interdisciplinary perspectives and translate latest research into clinical practice.

Book Handbook of Neurological Therapy

Download or read book Handbook of Neurological Therapy written by Carlo Colosimo and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a practical book on neurological therapy. It is aimed at giving concise and updated answers to busy practicing clinicians in the clinic, ward, or emergency department. An evidence-based approach is used, but when there is no evidence or the data are inconclusive, an expert opinion is always given in order to meet the expectations of the reader. All neurological conditions, common and less common, are discussed; each chapter has a similar format, and contains an initial brief introduction on the epidemiology and clinical features of each disease. The therapy is then discussed, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological, with wide use of Tables & Figures. Flowcharts are also included in most of the chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to provide we general physicians with a conveniently sized work for daily reference. It deals with an area of medical practice which is rapidly changing. For that reason regular updating with new material will need to be considered. The book does not profess to be encyc1opaedic. In order to keep the size of the book within bounds. there are no sections devoted solely to psychological medicine or to paediatrics. but the book does deal with the more common diseases as revealed by morbidity studies. The main section of the book-A-is concerned with these commoner diseases and is set out in conventional fashion. It is in two parts; the one dealing with therapeutics. the other with clinical phannacology. The second section-B-reviews therapy in some selected areas. Cancer. pain and tenninal care. contraception. and hyperlipoproteinaemias. It also contains pieces on common emergencies. home renal dialysis and tropical diseases in non-tropical countries. The creation of 'pain c1inics·. and the possibilities for the treatment of intractable pain are innovations calculated to be more widely used as we become more aware of theirvalue. The field of rehabilitation is one of which we general physicians are on less familiar ground. To say that by us it is a neglected field is perhaps not too strong a statement. The section on Drugs concentrates on the practical side of drug administration and hence the stress is on the incompatibilities. side etfects and contraindications.
