Book Oral Health related Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Download or read book Oral Health related Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Osteogenesis Imperfecta written by Mohammadamin Najirad and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Children and teenagers with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), may have their Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) affected by the oral traits of the disease. However, there is little that we know of OHRQoL and its determinants amongst this population. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the extent of associations between disease-related oral conditions and OHRQoL in children and adolescents having OI.Aim: To estimate the extent of association between oral traits of OI and OHRQoL amongst children and adolescents suffering from OI. Methodology: Children and adolescents aged 8-14 years were recruited in the context of a multicenter longitudinal study (Brittle Bone Disease Consortium) that enrolls individuals with OI in 10 centers across North America. Data on socio-demographic factors, and medical history were collected using a questionnaire. OHRQoL was assessed using the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ) versions for 8 to 10-year-olds (CPQ8-10) and for 11 to 14-year-olds (CPQ11-14). A comprehensive oral evaluation was performed at each center by calibrated dentists. A multivariate ordinal logistic regression was employed to adjust for the potential confounders. Results: A total of 138 children and adolescents (62% girls) diagnosed with OI types I, III, IV, V and VI (n=65, 30, 37, 4 and 2, respectively) participated in the study. Caries experience (adjusted-DFT) and oral hygiene (OHI-S) were not statistically significantly different between OI types both in children and adolescents. Amongst all participants 34% (n=47) had dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI), 50% (n=69) had class III dental malocclusion, 36% (n=50) had posterior cross-bite and 28% (n=39) had lateral open-bite. The prevalence of aforementioned traits are predominantly higher amongst patients having OI type III. The only statistically significant determinants of negative impact on oral health-related quality of life was posterior cross-bite in the adolescent group with having the strongest association with functional limitation domain. Having posterior crossbite increases the odds of having higher grades of functional limitations by a factor of 6.1 (95% CI: 1.7- 22.6). Accordingly, having posterior crossbite increases the odds of having lower OHRQoL by 5.9 (95% CI: 1.6- 20.9) times amongst adolescents. No statistically significant association was observed in the children's group. Conclusion: Regardless of OI type, teenagers with posterior cross-bite experience significantly lower OHRQoL than those without. " --

Book excerpt: Introduction: Children and adolescents with cancer may present with oral complications due to its treatment and/or disease that may compromise their quality of life. Objectives:To assess the oral health related quality of life of children and adolescents undergoing treatment for cancer at a pediatric oncology center. Methods: Ten patients undergoing treatment for cancer aged 8 to 14 years old were assessed between May and July 2015. Information collected was: demographic data, medical history, oncologic diagnoses and chief oral complaint. Measures of caries experience (DMFT/deft index) and periodontal disease (Community Periodontal Index) were calculated. Oral health related quality of life was assessed by the Portuguese validated version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire in two groups of children: 8 to 10 years old and 11 to 14 years old. Results: Most of the patients were undergoing chemotherapy (n=6), three were undergoing chemotherapy associated with head and neck radiotherapy, and one were undergoing head and neck radiotherapy. Xerostomia, dry lips, dysgeusia and orofacial pain were the most oral complaints among patients. The mean dmft was 4.2, DMFT was 0.9 and CPI was 2.7. Regarding quality of life, 50% of subjects aged 8-10 reported experiencing oral symptoms u201cOftenu201d or u201cEveryday/Almost everydayu201d while 67% of subjects aged 11-14 reported experiencing functional limitations u201cOftenu201d or u201cEveryday/Almost everydayu201d. There was a significant difference between childu2019s and parents' perception on functional limitations on 8 to 10 years old group. Conclusions: Oral complications due to cancer therapy may have a negative impact on quality of life of children and adolescents undergoing cancer therapy.

Book Oral Health Related Quality of Life in Children

Download or read book Oral Health Related Quality of Life in Children written by Neha Agrawal and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) instruments have being widely used in oral health studies. However, most OHRQoL measures are designed to assess the adult population, mainly due to the difficulties for developing such measures for children and their validation. The main contribution of this study was to successfully assess psychometric properties and describe the impact of oral health on children's quality of life and its importance for this specific age group. The use of indicators of OHRQoL in children is necessary since they are based on self-perception and oral health impact, which is essential for planning and evaluation of health promotion considering biological and psychosocial aspects. This book is very useful for students in general and for dental and public health professional in particular to seek and provide more regular dental care for children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Helping patients achieve an optimal quality of life through patient-centered treatment planning should be the ultimate goal of all oral health care providers. However, this issue extends beyond the realm of the individual clinician's office. This text presents quality-of-life research from various fields, including psychology, public health, and general health care; discusses how a patient-centered approach can be applied to basic oral and craniofacial research, clinical dental practice, community dental health issues, and dental education; and addresses how oral health-related quality of life relates to treating and understanding different patient populations, such as children with special needs, medically compromised patients, patients with oral cancer, and patients with chronic facial pain. Also discussed is how factors such as race/ethnicity, gender, and age can affect oral health-related quality-of-life concerns and treatment strategies. Finally, the book offers an outlook on the role that oral health-related quality of life will play in future research and dental education.

Book ORAL HEALTH RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE TRENDS IN ADOLESCENTS

Download or read book ORAL HEALTH RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE TRENDS IN ADOLESCENTS written by Ali Mohammed and published by . This book was released on 2022-06-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescence is the phase of life between childhood and adulthood, from ages 10 to 19. It is a unique stage of human development and an important time for laying the foundations of good health. Adolescents experience rapid physical, cognitive and psychosocial growth. This affects how they feel, think, make decisions, and interact with the world around them. Despite being thought of as a healthy stage of life, there is significant death, illness and injury in the adolescent years. Much of this is preventable or treatable. During this phase, adolescents establish patterns of behaviour - for instance, related to diet, physical activity, substance use, and sexual activity - that can protect their health and the health of others around them, or put their health at risk now and in the future. To grow and develop in good health, adolescents need information, including age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education; opportunities to develop life skills; health services that are acceptable, equitable, appropriate and effective; and safe and supportive environments. They also need opportunities to meaningfully participate in the design and delivery of interventions to improve and maintain their health. Expanding such opportunities is key to responding to adolescents' specific needs and rights.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled CHANGES IN CHILDREN'S ORAL HEALTH RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE FOLLOWING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT Submitted by ZHANG MAN For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in September 2007 Malocclusion is a common oral disorder and the demand for orthodontic care is increasing among children. There is a dearth of information as to how malocclusion and its treatment impacts on the life quality of children, which has obvious implications in assessing orthodontic treatment need and evaluating outcomes from orthodontic care. This prospective longitudinal study was conducted to identify associations between orthodontic treatment need and child oral health-related quality of life (COHQoL); to determine the level of agreement between parents' and children's perceptions of COHQoL; to determine changes in COHQoL as a result of undergoing fixed orthodontic appliance therapy and to determine changes in COHQoL following orthodontic treatment. Children (aged 11-14) seeking orthodontic treatment were recruited in this study and followed-up over a three year period. Children's parents were also recruited at baseline. Children self-completed the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ) at baseline (pre-treatment status and expectations of treatment), during orthodontic treatment (at one week, one month, three months, six months, twelve months, and eighteen months after insertion of fixed appliance), and 6-months post-treatment. Their parents completed the Parental Perception Questionnaire (PPQ) and Family Impact scale (FIS) prior to treatment. Children's pretreatment occlusal models were assessed by three commonly used occlusal indices: Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) including Aesthetic Components (AC) and Dental Health Components (DHC), Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON) and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). Improvements in occlusion following orthodontic treatment was determined by assessing differences in ICON scores obtained from pre- and post- treatment orthodontic casts. CPQ scores and AC scores were significant correlated (r=0.27, p0.05). FIS scores were significantly correlated with scores of ICON (r= 0.26, pDuring orthodontic treatment significant changes in CPQ scores occurred (pThere was significant reduction in CPQ scores 6-months following orthodontic treatment compared to pre-treatment (p0.05). Perceived improvement in oral health was associated with improvement in COHQoL (reduction in CPQ scores) a
