Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Helping patients achieve an optimal quality of life through patient-centered treatment planning should be the ultimate goal of all oral health care providers. However, this issue extends beyond the realm of the individual clinician's office. This text presents quality-of-life research from various fields, including psychology, public health, and general health care; discusses how a patient-centered approach can be applied to basic oral and craniofacial research, clinical dental practice, community dental health issues, and dental education; and addresses how oral health-related quality of life relates to treating and understanding different patient populations, such as children with special needs, medically compromised patients, patients with oral cancer, and patients with chronic facial pain. Also discussed is how factors such as race/ethnicity, gender, and age can affect oral health-related quality-of-life concerns and treatment strategies. Finally, the book offers an outlook on the role that oral health-related quality of life will play in future research and dental education.

The Oral Health Initiative encompassed 15 sites from around the country, about half in urban and half in rural communities. The research presented in this supplement shows that innovative program models can engage and retain people who are living with HIV/AIDS into oral health-care services. The articles in this special issue represent the most comprehensive additions to the body of knowledge about oral health care for people living with HIV/AIDS since the HIV Cost and Services Utilization Study conducted nearly a decade ago." -- Publisher's website.

Book Dental Care for People Living with HIV a Phenomenological Approach

Download or read book Dental Care for People Living with HIV a Phenomenological Approach written by Mehrnoosh Alborzi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Background: Oral health care is amongst one of the highest unmet needs of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV); this may be due to barriers they face accessing care, such as stigmatization and fear of discrimination. PLHIV have indeed reported negative experiences at dental offices and with dental staff. However, there is a lack of recent and in-depth studies that capture the current perspectives of PLHIV regarding accessing dental services. In order to respond to the oral health needs of PLHIV, it is thus important to better understand how they access and experience dental care in Canada. Objectives: Our objective was to better understand the lived experiences of PLHIV with respect to accessing dental care. In particular, we sought to better understand the difficulties and the stigmatization they faced trying to fulfil these needs, and finally to make recommendations for alleviating these difficulties. Methods: We adopted a participatory approach and an interpretive phenomenological research design. We invited community associations for PLHIV and organizations fighting HIV to collaborate with us at all stages of the research. In order to gain an in-depth understanding of the perspectives and experiences of PLHIV, we used a qualitative approach, namely interpretive phenomenology, which is particularly appropriate for understanding and describing complex and sensitive experiences. We conducted in-depth interviews with eight people living with HIV in Montreal. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and interpretively analysed.Findings: Living with HIV significantly shapes the experiences of people regarding their oral health and accessing dental care. Our participants struggled with an imperfect oral health and a limited access to dental care. Thus they experienced anxiety over managing a fragile oral health for years to come. Although they were generally satisfied with their dentists, they reported isolated negative encounters with the dental staff. Because of these negative experiences, in addition to that of other PLHIV, some participants anticipated being stigmatized in dental settings. To avoid such potential discrimination, they either chose not to disclose their HIV status to the dentists, or to visit a trusted dentist known for accepting PLHIV.Conclusion: Dental professionals should be aware of and sensitive to the complexities of PLHIV's life experiences and try to accommodate their specific needs. Dentists alongside other members of the society should also tackle HIV stigma in dental settings and society at large." --

Book Barriers to Oral Health Care Among People Living with HIV in KwaZulu Natal and the Wetern Cape

Download or read book Barriers to Oral Health Care Among People Living with HIV in KwaZulu Natal and the Wetern Cape written by Mervyn Sydney Turton and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HIV/AIDS is a major problem in South Africa with more than 25 percent of the adult population infected with HIV. Oral lesions and various opportunistic infections characterize the progression of HIV making it imperative for people living with HIV to have access to good quality oral care. There is a need to examine accessibility and use of dental services in South Africans living with HIV as very little research in this regard, has been undertaken. Aim of the research is to investigate the barriers to oral health care for people living with HIV in the KZN and the WC. A cross-sectional study utilising a self-administered questionnaire and semi-structured interviews has been employed. Participants were people living with HIV older than 18 years attending HIV clinics located throughout Kwa-Zulu Natal and WC. Binary logistic regression was performed to determine the variables associated with not obtaining care. The sample (n=435) comprised mainly of black females in the age group 20-29 years. There were statistically significant differences in terms of socio-demographic factors between the two provincial cohorts. Of the total number of participants, 347 (79.8%) had an oral health problem and 83% (n=288) received care. Of those that received care, more than half of the participants (57.6%) reported that the staff were aware of their HIV status. Almost a third of the participants who received care reported a negative experience. Of those that did not receive care, there were disparate reasons between the two provincial cohorts. In KZN, the reasons for not receiving care related to the service being unavailable, too far away or lack of money to pay for transport and for the service, while in WC, participants had no money to pay for transport and for the service, but were mostly afraid of discrimination, stigmatisation and lack of confidentiality.
