Il joue à la fois le rôle de capteur de lumière et de système formateur d'image. L'exploration de l'œil dans son volume, à des fins de simple observation (anatomie, physiologie, diagnostic), ou de caractérisation (mesures géométriques, optiques), présente de multiples intérêts dans divers domaines (optométrie, contactologie, ophtalmologie, physiologie...). Cette exploration nécessite toute une instrumentation spécifique. Instruments d'optique ophtalmique utilise les outils de l'optique géométrique (tracés de rayons et calculs d'images), ainsi que l'interprétation des phénomènes étudiés par l'optique physique (interférence, diffraction et polarisation), afin de mieux pénétrer la logique interne des différents appareils. En mettant l'accent sur les principes optiques mis en œuvre, ce livre technique et abondamment illustré présente les principaux instruments d'optique utilisés pour : l'observation externe et interne de l'œil (loupes et téléloupes, microscopes, ophtalmoscopes, tomographes à cohérence optique) , la mesure de ses caractéristiques géométriques et optiques (kératomètres, topographes, réfractomètres) , la mesure des caractéristiques des verres et des lentilles compensatrices (radiuscopes et frontofocomètres). Les exemples et exercices intégrés dans le texte permettent de préciser concrètement certaines valeurs numériques et de relativiser les résultats. De plus, des études de brevets apportent une description précise d'instruments dans la phase de projet et mettent en évidence leur originalité par rapport aux instruments existants. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the concept of Perspectiva – the Latin word for optics – encompassed many areas of enquiry that had been viewed since antiquity as interconnected, but which afterwards were separated: optics was incorporated into the field of physics (i.e., physical and geometrical optics), vision came to be regarded as the sum of various psycho-physiological mechanisms involved in the way the eye operates (i.e., physiological optics and psychology of vision) and the word ‘perspective’ was reserved for the mathematical representation of the external world (i.e., linear perspective).
