Book Optimum Design of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Optimum Design of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells written by Allen J. Bronowicki and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report deals with the optimum structural design of circular cylindrical shells reinforced with identical uniformly spaced T-ring stiffeners, and subjected to external pressure loading. The optimization problems considered are of three types: (1) minimum-weight design, (2) design for maximum separation of the lowest two natural frequencies, and (3) design for maximum separation of the lowest two natural frequencies which have primarily axial content. Gross buckling is precluded by specifying a minimum natural frequency, and additional behavioral constraints preclude yielding or buckling of panels, T-ring stiffeners, and web and flange instabilities within each T-ring. Analysis is based on use of an equivalent orthotropic shell model, and optimization is accomplished through use of a sequential unconstrained minimization technique. (Modified author abstract).

Book Optimum Design of Submerged Cylindrical Shells Subjected to Dynamic Loadings

Download or read book Optimum Design of Submerged Cylindrical Shells Subjected to Dynamic Loadings written by R. B. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a procedure for the optimum design of a submerged T-ring stiffened cylindrical shell subjected to a specified harmonic excitation and external pressure. Three different design objectives can be investigated: (1) minimum structural mass, (2) minimum structural response and (3) minimum of a linear combination of structural mass and structural response. The design variables are shell thickness, T-web depth and thickness, T-flange width and thickness, and (uniform) stiffener spacing. The design constraints are on geometric admissibility, in vacuo natural frequencies of the shell, shell buckling, and on internal stresses. Numerical studies indicate the necessity of constraining the structural mass of the cylinder if minimum structural response is the design objective, and constraints must be imposed on both structural response and maximum structural mass when the combined design objective is employed.

Book Optimal Design of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Using Multiple Frame Sizes

Download or read book Optimal Design of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Using Multiple Frame Sizes written by Michael Pappas and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the solution to the singly reinforced discrete stiffener problem by direct use of an optimization scheme employing mathematical programming. The optimization formulation and procedure used here admit a large number of simultaneous buckling modes thus allowing optimization under conditions of mode coalescence, which are usual in this type of problem. This is a preliminary study, the purposes of which are; to develop and evaluate methodology for the treatment of this problem, to develop preliminary insights into how multiple frame sizes may efficiently be employed in submersible structures, to examine the nature of design improvement resulting from use of multiple size frames, and to investigate the nature of such optimal designs. This book was released on 1992 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to create a flexible code which is to be used in the investigation of optimum (minimum weight) shell designs. A shell analysis/design program (DAPS3) and a general purpose numerical optimization program (ADS) are incorporated into a single code (THESIS). This code provides the user great flexibility in changing the design variables and constraints which model the optimization problem. The optimum designs produced by this code are compared to DAPS3 optimum designs in order to identify any improvements made by the numerical optimization technique.

Book Optimum Design of Steel Structures

Download or read book Optimum Design of Steel Structures written by József Farkas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book helps designers and manufacturers to select and develop the most suitable and competitive steel structures, which are safe, fit for production and economic. An optimum design system is used to find the best characteristics of structural models, which guarantee the fulfilment of design and fabrication requirements and minimize the cost function. Realistic numerical models are used as main components of industrial steel structures. Chapter 1 containts some experiences with the optimum design of steel structures Chapter 2 treats some newer mathematical optimization methods. Chapter 3 gives formulae for fabrication times and costs. Chapters 4 deals with beams and columns. Summarizes the Eurocode rules for design. Chapter 5 deals with the design of tubular trusses. Chapter 6 gives the design of frame structures and fire-resistant design rules for a frame. In Chapters 7 some minimum cost design problems of stiffened and cellular plates and shells are worked out for cases of different stiffenings and loads. Chapter 8 gives a cost comparison of cylindrical and conical shells. The book contains a large collection of literatures and a subject list and a name index.

Book Optimal Design of Geodesically Stiffened Composite Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Optimal Design of Geodesically Stiffened Composite Cylindrical Shells written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An optimization system based on the finite element code Computations Structural Mechanics (CSM) Testbed and the optimization program, Automated Design Synthesis (ADS), is described. The optimization system can be used to obtain minimum-weight designs of composite stiffened structures. Ply thickness, ply orientations, and stiffener heights can be used as design variables. Buckling, displacement, and material failure constraints can be imposed on the design. The system is used to conduct a design study of geodesically stiffened shells. For comparison purposes, optimal designs of unstiffened shells and shells stiffened by rings and stingers are also obtained. Trends in the design of geodesically stiffened shells are identified. An approach to include local stress concentrations during the design optimization process is then presented. The method is based on a global/local analysis technique. It employs spline interpolation functions to determine displacements and rotations from a global model which are used as 'boundary conditions' for the local model. The organization of the strategy in the context of an optimization process is described. The method is validated with an example. Gendron, G. and Guerdal, Z.
