Book Energy Efficient Driving of Road Vehicles

Download or read book Energy Efficient Driving of Road Vehicles written by Antonio Sciarretta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book elaborates the science and engineering basis for energy-efficient driving in conventional and autonomous cars. After covering the physics of energy-efficient motion in conventional, hybrid, and electric powertrains, the book chiefly focuses on the energy-saving potential of connected and automated vehicles. It reveals how being connected to other vehicles and the infrastructure enables the anticipation of upcoming driving-relevant factors, e.g. hills, curves, slow traffic, state of traffic signals, and movements of nearby vehicles. In turn, automation allows vehicles to adjust their motion more precisely in anticipation of upcoming events, and to save energy. Lastly, the energy-efficient motion of connected and automated vehicles could have a harmonizing effect on mixed traffic, leading to additional energy savings for neighboring vehicles. Building on classical methods of powertrain modeling, optimization, and optimal control, the book further develops the theory of energy-efficient driving. In addition, it presents numerous theoretical and applied case studies that highlight the real-world implications of the theory developed. The book is chiefly intended for undergraduate and graduate engineering students and industry practitioners with a background in mechanical, electrical, or automotive engineering, computer science or robotics.

Book Next Generation Intelligent Driver vehicle infrastructure Cooperative System for Energy Efficient Driving in Connected Vehicle Environment

Download or read book Next Generation Intelligent Driver vehicle infrastructure Cooperative System for Energy Efficient Driving in Connected Vehicle Environment written by Xuewei Qi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation-related fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions have received increasing public concern in recent years. To reduce energy consumption and mitigate the environmental impact of transportation activities, this dissertation research work aims at providing technical solutions by taking advantage of recent technology development in vehicle automation, vehicle connectivity and vehicle electrification. More specifically, a driver-vehicle-infrastructure cooperative framework for energy efficient driving of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) is proposed in this dissertation. Within this framework, this research improves energy efficiency of PEVs in the following ways: vehicle dynamics optimization and powertrain optimization, as well as co-optimization between them. For vehicle dynamics optimization, a connected ecodriving system has been designed for PEVs to optimize their speed profiles when travelling through signalized intersections, by receiving real-time signal phase and timing information obtained through wireless communications. The calculated optimal speed trajectory (in terms of energy efficiency) is provided to the driver through an in-vehicle display in real-time. The performance of this connected ecodriving system is implemented and evaluated at different automation levels: human driving without considering the driver error, human driving considering the driver error, and partial automated (longitudinal) driving. Numerical analysis with real-world driving data shows that there is 12%,14% and 21% potential energy savings that can be achieved by these proposed strategies respectively. For powertrain operation optimization, an evolutionary algorithm based power-split control system for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle has been designed and evaluated with real-world traffic data. The designed model is used to optimally control the power-split between two different power sources (i.e., battery and gas tank) by considering various traffic conditions to achieve the minimum fuel consumption when satisfying total power-demand. In addition, a reinforcement-learning based autonomous learning strategy is also proposed for learning the optimal power-split decision based on historical driving data. Approximately 14% and 12% energy savings are identified by these two different powertrain operation strategies respectively. For co-optimization of the vehicle dynamics and powertrain optimization, a bi-level optimization strategy has been designed and tested with real-world driving data to achieve augmented energy benefits from the compound effect of vehicle dynamics and powertrain operations optimization. An average of 29% improvement of fuel efficiency for the tested PHEV is identified by combining the vehicle dynamics and powertrain operation optimization. The main contribution of this dissertation research is the design and validation of a driver-vehicle-infrastructure framework for PEV energy efficient driving. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first efforts to systematically investigate the potential energy benefits of both vehicle dynamics and powertrain operation optimization as well as its compound effect with real-world driving data for PEVs. The designed connected eco-driving system and power-split control model are quite promising in improving PEV energy efficiency.

Book Energy efficient Routing for Electric Vehicles Using Metaheuristic Optimization Methods

Download or read book Energy efficient Routing for Electric Vehicles Using Metaheuristic Optimization Methods written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental concerns, energy dependency, and unstable fuel prices have led to an increased market share of electric vehicles. Currently, vehicle routing algorithms are designed for fossil-fueled vehicles. Energy-efficient routing for electric vehicles, on the other hand, require different solutions. "Negative path" costs generated by regenerative braking, battery power and energy limits, and vehicle parameters that are only available at query time, make the task of electric vehicle energy-efficient routing a challenging problem. In this work, a model representing electric vehicles is presented. The developed model covers most factors affecting the load on the electric vehicle's battery including traffic and ambient temperatures. The model was validated using a 2013 Fiat 500e electric vehicle. The average error was reported to be 1.03% after 306 kilometers of test-driving. After the model was validated, 2 metaheuristic search approaches were used to study the energy efficient routing problem for electric vehicles. Ant Colony Optimization and Particle Swarm Optimization are presented and implemented. Real-world test results show improvements in the energy consumption of electric vehicles. A real-world test was conducted on an 18 kilometer routing problem and the results where compared to the routes generated by Google Maps and MapQuest. The alternative route that was generated by the developed algorithms proved to be more 9.3% energy efficient than the most energy-efficient route that was generated by the traditional online routing services. Finally, the developed algorithms were tested against the Bellman-Ford algorithm, which is one of the few deterministic algorithms that supports negative paths. The metaheuristic methods were able to outperform Bellman-Ford and generate much faster solutions mainly because of its high computational complexity.

Book Deep Reinforcement Learning based Energy Management for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Download or read book Deep Reinforcement Learning based Energy Management for Hybrid Electric Vehicles written by Li Yeuching and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The urgent need for vehicle electrification and improvement in fuel efficiency has gained increasing attention worldwide. Regarding this concern, the solution of hybrid vehicle systems has proven its value from academic research and industry applications, where energy management plays a key role in taking full advantage of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). There are many well-established energy management approaches, ranging from rules-based strategies to optimization-based methods, that can provide diverse options to achieve higher fuel economy performance. However, the research scope for energy management is still expanding with the development of intelligent transportation systems and the improvement in onboard sensing and computing resources. Owing to the boom in machine learning, especially deep learning and deep reinforcement learning (DRL), research on learning-based energy management strategies (EMSs) is gradually gaining more momentum. They have shown great promise in not only being capable of dealing with big data, but also in generalizing previously learned rules to new scenarios without complex manually tunning. Focusing on learning-based energy management with DRL as the core, this book begins with an introduction to the background of DRL in HEV energy management. The strengths and limitations of typical DRL-based EMSs are identified according to the types of state space and action space in energy management. Accordingly, value-based, policy gradient-based, and hybrid action space-oriented energy management methods via DRL are discussed, respectively. Finally, a general online integration scheme for DRL-based EMS is described to bridge the gap between strategy learning in the simulator and strategy deployment on the vehicle controller.

Book Look ahead Information Based Optimization Strategy for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Download or read book Look ahead Information Based Optimization Strategy for Hybrid Electric Vehicles written by Mohammad Alzorgan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environmental impact of the fossil fuels has increased tremendously in the last decade. This impact is one of the most contributing factors of global warming. This research aims to reduce the amount of fuel consumed by vehicles through optimizing the control scheme for the future route information. Taking advantage of more degrees of freedom available within PHEV, HEV, and FCHEV energy management allows more margin to maximize efficiency in the propulsion systems. The application focuses on reducing the energy consumption in vehicles by acquiring information about the road grade. Road elevations are obtained by use of Geographic Information System (GIS) maps to optimize the controller. The optimization is then reflected on the powertrain of the vehicle. The approach uses a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm that allows the energy management strategy to leverage road grade to prepare the vehicle for minimizing energy consumption during an uphill and potential energy harvesting during a downhill. The control algorithm will predict future energy/power requirements of the vehicle and optimize the performance by instructing the power split between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and the electric-drive system. Allowing for more efficient operation and higher performance of the PHEV, and HEV. Implementation of different strategies, such as MPC and Dynamic Programming (DP), is considered for optimizing energy management systems. These strategies are utilized to have a low processing time. This approach allows the optimization to be integrated with ADAS applications, using current technology for implementable real time applications. The Thesis presents multiple control strategies designed, implemented, and tested using real-world road elevation data from three different routes. Initial simulation based results show significant energy savings. The savings range between 11.84% and 25.5% for both Rule Based (RB) and DP strategies on the real world tested routes. Future work will take advantage of vehicle connectivity and ADAS systems to utilize Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I), traffic information, and sensor fusion to further optimize the PHEV and HEV toward more energy efficient operation.
