Book Asymptotically Optimal Algorithm for Job Shop Scheduling and Packet Routing

Download or read book Asymptotically Optimal Algorithm for Job Shop Scheduling and Packet Routing written by International Business Machines Corporation. Research Division and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "We propose asymptotically optimal algorithms for the job shop scheduling and packet routing problems. We propose a relaxation for the job shop scheduling problem called the fluid control problem, in which we replace discrete jobs with the flow of a continuous fluid. The optimal solution of the fluid control problem can be computed in closed form and provides a lower bound C[subscript max] to the job shop scheduling problem. We use the optimal solution of the fluid control problem to construct a feasible schedule with objective value at most C[subscript max] + O([square root of (C[subscript max])]. For the packet routing problem with fixed paths the previous algorithm applies directly. For the general packet routing problem we propose a linear programming relaxation that provides a lower bound C[subscript max], and an algorithm that uses the optimal solution of the relaxation with objective value at most C[subscript max] + O([square root of (C[subscript max])]. This implies that as the total number of jobs (packets) tends to infinity, the proposed algorithms are asymptotically optimal. Unlike asymptotically optimal algorithms that rely on probabilistic assumptions, our proposed algorithms make no probabilistic assumptions, and they are asymptotically optimal for all instances with a large number of jobs (packets)."

Download or read book Project Scheduling written by Erik Leuven Demeulemeester and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our objectives in writing Project Scheduling: A Research Handbook are threefold: (1) Provide a unified scheme for classifying the numerous project scheduling problems occurring in practice and studied in the literature; (2) Provide a unified and up-to-date treatment of the state-of-the-art procedures developed for their solution; (3) Alert the reader to various important problems that are still in need of considerable research effort. Project Scheduling: A Research Handbook has been divided into four parts. Part I consists of three chapters on the scope and relevance of project scheduling, on the nature of project scheduling, and finally on the introduction of a unified scheme that will be used in subsequent chapters for the identification and classification of the project scheduling problems studied in this book. Part II focuses on the time analysis of project networks. Part III carries the discussion further into the crucial topic of scheduling under scarce resources. Part IV deals with robust scheduling and stochastic scheduling issues. Numerous tables and figures are used throughout the book to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of the discussions. For the interested and motivated reader, the problems at the end of each chapter should be considered as an integral part of the presentation.

Book Scheduling Computer and Manufacturing Processes

Download or read book Scheduling Computer and Manufacturing Processes written by Jacek Blazewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a continuation of Scheduling in Computer and Manufacturing Sys tems 1, two editions of which have received kind acceptance of a wide readership. As the previous position, it is the result of a collaborative German-Polish project which has been partially supported by Committee for Scientific Research 2 and DFG. We appreciate this help. We decided to treat this work as a new book rather than the third edition of the previous one due to two important reasons. First of all, the contents has been changed significantly. This concerns not only corrections we have introduced following the suggestions made by many readers (we are very grateful to all of them!) and taking into account our own experience, but first of all this means that important new material has been added. In particular, in the introductory part the ideas of new local search heuristics, i. e. generally applicable global optimization strategies with a simple capability of learning (ejection chains, genetic algo rithms) have been presented. In the framework of parallel processor scheduling, topics of imprecise computations and lot size scheduling have been studied. Further on flow shop and job shop scheduling problems have been studied much more extensively, both from the viewpoint of exact algorithms as well as heuris tics.

Book Mathematical Aspects of Scheduling and Applications

Download or read book Mathematical Aspects of Scheduling and Applications written by R. Bellman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Aspects of Scheduling and Applications addresses the perennial problem of optimal utilization of finite resources in the accomplishment of an assortment of tasks or objectives. The book provides ways to uncover the core of these problems, presents them in mathematical terms, and devises mathematical solutions for them. The book consists of 12 chapters. Chapter 1 deals with network problems, the shortest path problem, and applications to control theory. Chapter 2 stresses the role and use of computers based on the decision-making problems outlined in the preceding chapter. Chapter 3 classifies scheduling problems and their solution approaches. Chapters 4 to 6 discuss machine sequencing problems and techniques. Chapter 5 tackles capacity expansion problems and introduces the technique of embedded state space dynamic programming for reducing dimensionality so that larger problems can be solved. Chapter 6 then examines an important class of network problems with non-serial phase structures and exploits dimensionality reduction techniques, such as the pseudo-stage concept, branch compression, and optimal order elimination methods to solve large-scale, nonlinear network scheduling problems. Chapters 7 to 11 consider the flow-shop scheduling problem under different objectives and constraints. Chapter 12 discusses the job-shop-scheduling problem. The book will be useful to economists, planners, and graduate students in the fields of mathematics, operations research, management science, computer science, and engineering.

Book ROBUST OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHMS FOR THE FLOW SHOP AND JOB SHOP SCHEDULING PROBLEMS WITH RANDOM FAILURES AND PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Download or read book ROBUST OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHMS FOR THE FLOW SHOP AND JOB SHOP SCHEDULING PROBLEMS WITH RANDOM FAILURES AND PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE written by Rafael Lucas Costa Souza and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a real-life problem in the kitchen cabinet manufacturing industry, this thesis proposes a suite of algorithms for solving the flow shop and the job shop scheduling problems (FSP & JSP) with both scheduled (preventive) maintenance and random breakdowns. These algorithms aim at obtaining schedules that strike a good balance between performance quality (i.e., shortest expected makespan) and solution robustness (i.e., least affected by breakdowns). The proposed scheduling framework approximates the fitness function of the original problem using three surrogate functions. The first considers only the actual jobs, the second adds scheduled maintenances and the third adds both scheduled maintenances and deterministic breakdowns based on the mean time to failure of machines. For the FSP, a local optimum solution of each surrogate problem is found either through a local search heuristic or a simulated annealing algorithm. For the JSP, given the extremely large search space, a genetic algorithm is used to find local optimal solutions. These solutions are then simulated with random breakdowns and the best among them is compared to the incumbent solution of the original problem. In different variants of the algorithm, it either terminates once the new solution is found to be worse than the incumbent, or non-improving solutions are accepted, yet with a decreasing probability, in a simulated annealing style. The first algorithm of the FSP showed no improvement over the initial solution for the 25-machine, 75-job problem. The second algorithm did not perform well due to premature termination. The third algorithm showed marginal improvement with an average of 1.25% over the initial solution with a much higher average run time. The first algorithm for the JSP showed an average marginal improvement of 5.33% and a quick run time of 10.01 minutes for the 50-job, 15-machine problem. The second algorithm showed good performance with an average improvement of 6.71% in an average time of 5.11 hours. These results show that the proposed framework can generate high-quality schedules while taking scheduled maintenance and random breakdowns into consideration.

Download or read book Scheduling written by Michael L. Pinedo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-07 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the well established text Scheduling - Theory, Algorithms, and Systems provides an up-to-date coverage of important theoretical models in the scheduling literature as well as significant scheduling problems that occur in the real world. It again includes supplementary material in the form of slide-shows from industry and movies that show implementations of scheduling systems. The main structure of the book as per previous edition consists of three parts. The first part focuses on deterministic scheduling and the related combinatorial problems. The second part covers probabilistic scheduling models; in this part it is assumed that processing times and other problem data are random and not known in advance. The third part deals with scheduling in practice; it covers heuristics that are popular with practitioners and discusses system design and implementation issues. All three parts of this new edition have been revamped and streamlined. The references have been made completely up-to-date. Theoreticians and practitioners alike will find this book of interest. Graduate students in operations management, operations research, industrial engineering, and computer science will find the book an accessible and invaluable resource. Scheduling - Theory, Algorithms, and Systems will serve as an essential reference for professionals working on scheduling problems in manufacturing, services, and other environments. Reviews of third edition: This well-established text covers both the theory and practice of scheduling. The book begins with motivating examples and the penultimate chapter discusses some commercial scheduling systems and examples of their implementations." (Mathematical Reviews, 2009)
