Book Data guided Resource Allocation to Improve User Experience in Computer Networks

Download or read book Data guided Resource Allocation to Improve User Experience in Computer Networks written by Yanan Bao and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machine learning methods have been widely used in modeling and predicting user experience in computer networks. In our work, moving beyond user experience prediction, we propose a novel closed-loop approach that uses data-generated prediction models to explicitly guide resource allocation for user experience improvement. The approach consists of three component: 1) To train a classifier (e.g., logistic regression, neural network, decision tree, random forest) to predict user experience, 2) to utilize the trained classifier as the objective function to decide network resource allocation, and 3) to (in)validate and adjust the initial model based on user feedback with allocated resource. In the following, we discuss our contributions in details. Firstly, the resource allocation problem based on the learned models is challenging because of its large scale and non-convexity. We propose a Dual decomposition algorithm to obtain a near optimal solution efficiently. In a case study, we use a dataset provided by a tier-1 cellular operator in China to build models that predict user complaints with high accuracy, and then based on the trained model to allocate resources. The performance of our resource allocation algorithms achieve 2x performance gain compared with an optimized baseline. Secondly, the feedback component is used to obtain an optimized classifier to guide more efficient resource allocation. Since after resource allocation based on the initial classifier, user distribution could change, and therefore the initial classifier may no longer be optimal to guide resource allocation. To address this issue, we further develop an iterative mechanism for classifier optimization. Numerical simulations based on both synthetic and real network datasets demonstrate that the optimized classifier further improves the performance by 50%. Finally, we study the new application of 360-degree video transmission. We propose a motion-prediction-based transmission scheme that reduces the bandwidth consumption while providing user experience guarantees. Based on the collected viewer motion data, we develop regression schemes that predict not only the viewpoint but also the prediction accuracy. With such predictions, we develop a set of partial content transmission schemes that minimize bandwidth consumption while guaranteeing viewer experience. Our trace driven simulation results demonstrate significant bandwidth reduction under strong performance guarantees. For example, with a prediction time scale of 0.2s, our proposed scheme can reduce 45% bandwidth consumption while guaranteeing a 0.1% failure ratio.

Book Scalable Optimization via Probabilistic Modeling

Download or read book Scalable Optimization via Probabilistic Modeling written by Martin Pelikan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-01-12 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I’m not usually a fan of edited volumes. Too often they are an incoherent hodgepodge of remnants, renegades, or rejects foisted upon an unsuspecting reading public under a misleading or fraudulent title. The volume Scalable Optimization via Probabilistic Modeling: From Algorithms to Applications is a worthy addition to your library because it succeeds on exactly those dimensions where so many edited volumes fail. For example, take the title, Scalable Optimization via Probabilistic M- eling: From Algorithms to Applications. You need not worry that you’re going to pick up this book and ?nd stray articles about anything else. This book focuseslikealaserbeamononeofthehottesttopicsinevolutionary compu- tion over the last decade or so: estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs). EDAs borrow evolutionary computation’s population orientation and sel- tionism and throw out the genetics to give us a hybrid of substantial power, elegance, and extensibility. The article sequencing in most edited volumes is hard to understand, but from the get go the editors of this volume have assembled a set of articles sequenced in a logical fashion. The book moves from design to e?ciency enhancement and then concludes with relevant applications. The emphasis on e?ciency enhancement is particularly important, because the data-mining perspectiveimplicitinEDAsopensuptheworldofoptimizationtonewme- ods of data-guided adaptation that can further speed solutions through the construction and utilization of e?ective surrogates, hybrids, and parallel and temporal decompositions.

Book Toward a Unified View of the Speed Accuracy Trade Off Behaviour Neurophysiology and Modelling

Download or read book Toward a Unified View of the Speed Accuracy Trade Off Behaviour Neurophysiology and Modelling written by Dominic Standage and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-02-18 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone is familiar with the speed-accuracy trade-off (SAT). To make good choices, we need to balance the conflicting demands of fast and accurate decision making. After all, hasty decisions often lead to poor choices, but accurate decisions may be useless if they take too long. This notion is intuitive because it reflects a fundamental aspect of cognition: not only do we deliberate over the evidence for decisions, but we can control that deliberative process. This control raises many questions for the study of choice behaviour and executive function. For example, how do we figure out the appropriate balance between speed and accuracy on a given task? How do we impose that balance on our decisions, and what is its neural basis? Researchers have addressed these and related questions for decades, using a variety of methods and offering answers at different levels of abstraction. Given this diverse methodology, our aim is to provide a unified view of the SAT. Extensive analysis of choice behaviour suggests that we make decisions by accumulating evidence until some criterion is reached. Thus, adjusting the criterion controls how long we accumulate evidence and therefore the speed and accuracy of decisions. This simple framework provides the platform for our unified view. In the pages that follow, leading experts in decision neuroscience consider the history of SAT research, strategies for determining the optimal balance between speed and accuracy, conditions under which this seemingly ubiquitous phenomenon breaks down, and the neural mechanisms that may implement the computations of our unifying framework.
