Book Directing and Characterizing Silicon Nanocrystal Self assembly

Download or read book Directing and Characterizing Silicon Nanocrystal Self assembly written by Adrien Camille Guillaussier and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon nanocrystals or quantum dots are non-toxic and exhibit unique size tunable opto-electronic properties. Their bright photoluminescence as well as their ability to generate more than one electron per photon absorbed make them good candidates for both bioimaging and photovoltaics applications. Their surface can be functionalized with different ligands that protect them against oxidation and allow them to be dispersed and stable in a variety of solvents. Dodecane capped silicon nanocrystals can be dispersed in non-polar solvents such as hexane, chloroform or toluene for years without aggregating nor losing their optical properties. When deposited on a substrate under certain conditions, dodecane capped silicon nanocrystals can self-assemble into 2D or 3D periodic arrays of quantum dots called superlattices. These ordered structures of nanocrystals can potentially enhance the conductivity of the nanocrystal thin film which would be helpful for photovoltaic applications. In order to perform charge transport measurements through superlattices, large uniform ordered nanocrystal films must be achieved. Two deposition processes are studied and optimized to lead to the formation of several microns large both 2D and 3D silicon nanocrystals superlattices. A model is developed to understand the superlattice growth mechanism and several parameters are found to influence the superlattice morphology. Silicon nanocrystals can also be functionalized with chromophores to enhance their optical absorption. This can improve efficiencies of self-assembled quantum dots solar devices. Silicon nanocrystals functionalized with pyrene units are studied using transient absorption spectroscopy. They exhibit enhanced optical absorption and efficient carrier multiplication via energy transfer from the pyrene unit to the nanocrystal core. Finally, carboxylate terminated silicon nanocrystals are stable in water over a wide range of pH which makes them suitable for self-assembly in aqueous media. Incorporating biological receptor-substrate sites to the nanocrystal surface can permit recognition-driven self-assembly. Carbodiimide activation is commonly used to biofunctionalize nanoparticles. This chemistry is tested to attach an amine terminated PEG (polyethylene glycol) molecule to silicon nanocrystals. PEG functionalization is found to improve silicon nanocrystal photoluminescence stability

Book Electronic and Optical Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals

Download or read book Electronic and Optical Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals written by Fabio Trani and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even if the discovery of the photoluminescence of porous silicon dates to more than twenty years ago, the research on the optical properties of silicon is still a hot topic. The most recent experimental techniques have allowed the successful synthesis of silicon nanoparticles with narrow size distributions, and the realization of light-emitting silicon devices for technological and biomedical applications. From the theoretical point of view, the physics of silicon nanocrystals still deserves a huge interest. While the quantum confinement effect has been recognized as the main cause of the photoluminescence, many doubts remain on the way in which the phenomenon takes place in real nanocrystals. This book summarizes the result of a work lead by the author at the University of Naples. The density of states, the optical gap, the absorption spectra, the static dielectric constant, the recombination times, are all illustrated for several sets of silicon spheres and ellipsoids, upon changing their size and aspect ratio. The book also reviews previous research work, with special reference to the experimental and theoretical literature on silicon nanocrystals.

Book Semiconductor Nanocrystal Quantum Dots

Download or read book Semiconductor Nanocrystal Quantum Dots written by Andrey Rogach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-02 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to specifically focus on semiconductor nanocrystals, and address their synthesis and assembly, optical properties and spectroscopy, and potential areas of nanocrystal-based devices. The enormous potential of nanoscience to impact on industrial output is now clear. Over the next two decades, much of the science will transfer into new products and processes. One emerging area where this challenge will be very successfully met is the field of semiconductor nanocrystals. Also known as colloidal quantum dots, their unique properties have attracted much attention in the last twenty years.

Book Silicon Nanocrystals in Various Dielectric Matrices Structural and Optical Properties

Download or read book Silicon Nanocrystals in Various Dielectric Matrices Structural and Optical Properties written by Anastasiya Zelenina and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: AbstractThis dissertation is focused on the fundamental investigation of Si nanocrystals formed in annealed Si rich/stoichiometric dielectric multilayered structures. The films are prepared by size-controlled superlattices approach previously widely applied to SiOx/SiO2 superlattices. While a deep understanding of fundamental properties of Si nanocrystals in SiOx matrix has been already achieved, most of the results published on silicon nanocrystals in SiNx do not represent a clear understanding and sometimes even contradict to each other.Thereby, a starting point of the present research is a detailed study of Si nanocrystals embedded in Si nitride matrix. A careful development of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition parameters allowed the deposition of optimized SiNx/Si3N4 superlattices of various SiNx thicknesses, which were further annealed in order to form Si nanocrystals of various sizes. Based on transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, the formation of size-controlled Si nanocrystals of various sizes is confirmed. Despite photoluminescence spectra of these samples demonstrate the expected PL blue shift with the decrease of Si nanocrystal size, the shift is confirmed to be an optical artifact. The results presented here can explain a disagreement of the recent reports published on Si nanocrystals in SiNx matrix by other groups, as the photoluminescence peak shift is sometimes wrongly interpreted as nanocrystal size effect. Additionally, according to the concluded issues, novel hetero-combinations, which contain both silicon nitride and silicon oxide sublayers are proposed and realized. Although SiNx/SiO2 and SiOxNy/Si3N4 hetero-structures might show some benefits in optical and electrical properties compared to the standard SiOx/SiO2 and SiNx/Si3N4 superlattices, they have been only very barely studied previously. In the present work it is shown that high-temperature annealing leads to the destruction of SiNx/SiO2 hetero-superlattice, and Si nanocrystals of uncontrollable sizes irregularly distributed within the film are formed. At the same time SiOxNy/Si3N4 hetero-structure sustains high-temperature annealing and size-controlled Si nanocrystals demonstrate quantum luminescence
