Book EXOTIC OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF METAL DIELECTRIC NANO STRUCTURES

Download or read book EXOTIC OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF METAL DIELECTRIC NANO STRUCTURES written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : Advancement in fabrication technology made it possible to integrated different materials such as metals, dielectrics and semiconductors in a nano-meter scale structure. The capability of making features in the same order or even smaller than wavelength of light, visible and infrared, brought us the opportunity to manipulate light in a capacity which was not possible before. During the last decade, researches introduced several designs to address some of human's dreams, such as making huge object invisible and bringing small particles to human's eye sight. This dissertation presents three different nano-structures with exotic optical properties. The first one is a low loss negative index lens (NIL). The NIL is claimed to have the capability for sub-diffraction imaging, however power dissipation prevented from any realization of the NIL. We developed a method, called plasmon injection scheme, to compensate for power dissipation in the NIL with coherent injection of surface plasmon polariton (SPP). Magneto-optical metamaterial (MOM) is the second nano-structure we introduce in this dissertation. The MOM which is consist of a background magneto-optical (MO) material and metallic inclusions, delivers an order of magnitude enhancement in the Faraday rotation compare to the background MO material. The diagonal elements of the effective permittivity tensor of the MOM could be tuned in such a way to increase the Faraday rotation. This design can potentially reduce the size of non-reciprocal optical devices which work based on the Faraday rotation. The last structure we introduce in this dissertation is a thin-film amorphous Silicon (a-Si) solar cell with a honeycomb silver mesh as the emitter layer. Low efficiency is main disadvantage of thin-film a-Si cells, and the honeycomb mesh increases the efficiency of the cell by enhancing the light absorption in the active layer and reducing the series resistance of the cell. The honeycomb mesh benefits from low cost and scalable nano-bead lithography technique. Our simulations verified a properly designed honeycomb thin-film a-Si solar cell delivers %8 more electric power at the output terminal.

Book Optical Properties of Nanostructured Metallic Systems

Download or read book Optical Properties of Nanostructured Metallic Systems written by Sergio G. Rodrigo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-10-09 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common belief is that light is completely reflected by metals. In reality they also exhibit an amazing property that is not so widely known: under some conditions light flows along a metallic surface as if it were glued to it. Physical phenomena related to these light waves, which are called Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPP), have given rise to the research field of plasmonics. This thesis explores four interesting topics within plasmonics: extraordinary optical transmission, negative refractive index metamaterials, plasmonic devices for controlling SPPs, and field enhancement phenomena near metal nanoparticles.

Book Nanostructured Lead Cadmium and Silver Sulfides

Download or read book Nanostructured Lead Cadmium and Silver Sulfides written by Stanislav I. Sadovnikov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-02 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyzes the influence of small size particles of lead, cadmium and silver sulfide on the properties of nonstoichiometric semiconductors. Important nonstoichiometry aspects in nanostructures are discussed, such as the distribution of sulfur atoms in nanofilms, a non-periodic distribution of the atomic planes in nanoparticles, interdependent changes in crystal structure of nanocrystalline material. Tuning the stoichiometry allows to obtain superionic conductivity and catalytic activity under visible light. The wavelength of the luminescence of nanoparticles changes with the size of the nanoparticles. Various methods to prepare nanostructured sulfides are described. Special attention is given to the hydrochemical bath deposition as a universal method for the synthesis of sulfides as nanofilms, stable colloidal solutions, quantum dots, isolated nanoparticles with a protective shell and heteronanostructures. The effect of nanoparticle size and nonstoichiometry on the band gap, optical and thermal properties of nanostructured sulfides is also considered. The novel applications of sulfide nanoparticles in nanoelectronics, catalysis, nanobiology and nanomedicine are sketched.

This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2008 in the subject Physics - Optics, Babe -Bolyai Universit, language: English, comment: No grade was given after defense of the thesis, but the author earned the distinction "Summa cum laude.," abstract: Ordered plasmonic nanostructures are currently the subject of numerous scientific studies, due to their potential applications, from optical communications to chemical analyses and biomedicine. This thesis is focused on a special type of periodically ordered two-dimensional (2D) metallo-dielectric structure, noble metal films over microsphere arrays: from their fabrication and characterization, to spectroscopic applications. Prepared structures exhibit remarkable optical properties (including an unusually high transmittance, resembling the extraordinary optical transmission phenomenon), resulting from the excitation of surface plasmons. It is demonstrated that these plasmo-photonic structures are very promising multifunctional active-substrates for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering, Metal Enhanced Fluorescence, and Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy. Chapter 1 is devoted to giving an overview of the interesting aspects related to the optical properties and applications of periodically structured metals and dielectrics. We also briefly describe some of the currently developed nanofabrication techniques. A few concepts, like the photonic band and surface plasmon are introduced, being useful for the discussions in the upcoming chapters. We pay a special attention to colloidal photonic crystal films and noble metal structures obtained by templating on two-dimensional colloidal crystals. Chapter 2 presents own experimental results concerning the preparation, characterization and lithographic applications of two-dimensional (2D) colloidal crystal films. Results of the optical properties investigations are presented in Chapter 3, and divided in two main categories: i) photonic properties of bare microsphere arrays, and ii"

Book Studies Research and Investigations of the Optical Properties of Thin Films of Metals Semi Conductors and Dielectrics

Download or read book Studies Research and Investigations of the Optical Properties of Thin Films of Metals Semi Conductors and Dielectrics written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of small variations in the measured values of reflectance and transmittance on the optical constants was studied for several cases. The optical constants were determined by the measurement of reflectivity and transmissivity as a function of wavelength, and by measuring the thickness. The previously calculated curves relating these parameters were then used. The primary emphasis in this report lies in an attempt to assess the limits of validity in the use of this method of determining optical constants. To this end, some measurements were also made on chromium films. (Author).
