Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of papers presented at the Topical Meeting on Optical BistabiJity (OB3) held December 2-4,1985 in Tucson, Arizona. The increase in attendance to almost 200 shows that interest continues to grow in the sub ject of optical bistability (OB) and its wider implications both in application to "optical digital computing" and to basic physics, notably instabilities and spatial effects. The maturing of the field is evidenced by the fact that the number of experimental papers has caught up with the number of theoretical ones. These trends were already apparent in OB2 and the 1984 Royal Society Meeting on Optical Bistabilty, Dynamical Nonlinearity and Photonic Logic. Progress in experiment.al topics included guided-wave OB, mostly ther mal, picol'econd switching, studies on quite a number of new materials, op tical computing, and pattern recognition using arrays of nonlinear etalons. Theoretical progress ranged from rather practical calculations on device per formance, noise effects on switching, and transverse and longitudinal spatial effects to fundamental studies of dynamics, instabilities, and chaos. The Conference also included both theoretical ideas on optical computer archit.ecture and intrinsic OB circuit elements such as as full adder as well as t.he first demonstration of an intrinsic optical circuit in the form of a cas cadable loop with bufferd st.ores. A first demostration of a simple pattern recognition algorithm using 2-D arrays of spots on a ZnSe int.erference filter was reported.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topical meeting on Optical Bistability provided an international interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of knowledge on the progress of various aspects of optical bistability and optical nonlinearities. The three day program addressed six key areas: 1) Optical bistability in various materials; physics and applications; optical logic gates; etalon and waveguide devices; 2) New schemes and models for optical bistability, including increasing absorption, polarization, crosstrapping bistability, and bistability with surface plasmons; 3) Transverse and longitudinal effects including diffusion, conduction, diffraction, and absorption; 4) Instabilities, noise, fluctuations, and optical chaos; 5) Optical nonlinearities and optical materials including organic, liquid crystal, and semiconductor and photorefractive materials; and 6) Optical computing including architecture, cascading problems, parallel operations, and associate memory phenomena. A total of 97 papers were presented during the three day meeting. Keywords: Symposia abstracts; Nonlinear optical materials; Optoelectronics; Nonlinear guided waves; Chaos and instabilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of experimental and theoretical papers presented at the international "Topical Meeting on Optical Bistability", held at the University of Rochester, June 15-17, 1983, sponsored jointly by the Air Force Office of Scientific Re search; the Army Research Office; and the Optical Society of America. The Conference, which had 150 attendees, overlapped (on June 15) with the Fifth Rochester Conference on Coherence and Quantum Optics with two joint sessions. Some of the topics cover ed in this volume are also treated io the Proceedings of that Conference. Since the last international conference on Optical Bistability, held in Asheville, North Carolina, June 3-5, 1980, there have been new and important fundamental advances in the field. This is borne out in papers in this volume dealing with optical chaos and period doubling bifurcations leading to chaos as well as the report of results of an experiment using a very simple system exhibiting ab sorptive optical bistability in a ring cavity using optically pump ed sodium atoms, which was successfully analyzed quantitatively by a simple theory. Other advances discussed here include the ob servation of optical bistability due to the effect of radiation pressure on one mirror of a fabry-Perot cavity. and the prediction of mirrorless intrinsic opittal bistability due to the local field correction incorporated into the Maxwell-Bloch formulation. Advances in optical bistability in semiconductors relate closer to actual device applications.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in experimental topics included guided wave Optical Bistability, mostly thermal, picosecond switching, studies on quite a number of new materials, optical computing, and pattern recognition using arrays of nonlinear etalons. Theoretical progress ranged from rather practical calculations on device performance, noise effects on switching, and transverse and longitudinal spatial effects to fundamental studies of dynamics, instabilities, and chaos. The Conference also included both theoretical ideas on optical computer architecture and intrinsic OB circuit elements such as as full adder as well as the first demonstration of an intrinsic optical circuit in the form of a cascadable loop with buffered stores. A first demonstration of a simple pattern recognition algorithm using 2 D arrays of spots on a ZnSe interference filter was reported. All-optical signal processing and computing has unique capabilities and much a progress has been made for devices with gain (the elusive optical transistor mentioned in the preface of OB2) and cascadable elements implying indefinitely extensible optical restoring logic were reported and provide the first few steps. Attempts to begin to use the massive parallelism and global interconnections look intriguing even with relatively slow devices; the alternative approach of serial (or even better, parallel) picosecond processing is also quite promising.

Book Optical Bistability Controlling Light With Light

Download or read book Optical Bistability Controlling Light With Light written by Hyatt Gibbs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Bistability: Controlling Light with Light focuses on optical bistability in nonlinear optical systems. Emphasis is on passive (non-laser) systems that exhibit reversible bistability with input intensity as the hysteresis variable, along with the physics and the potential applications of such systems for nonlinear optical signal processing. This book consists of seven chapters and begins with a historical overview of optical bistability in lasers and passive systems. The next chapter describes steady-state theories of optical bistability, including the Bonifacio-Lugiato model, as well as the boundary conditions of an optical cavity and the coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations. Both intrinsic and hybrid experiments are then described, along with light-by-light control, pulse reshaping, and external switching. The transient phenomena that arise either from instabilities in the bistable systems themselves or from fluctuations in the number of nonlinear atoms or in the number of intracavity photons are also considered. The final chapter examines the characteristics and fundamental limitations of an ideal device, the prospect of improving devices by identifying giant nonlinearities, and the utilization of the full power of optics by parallel processing. This monograph is intended for new entrants and active workers in the field of optical bistability.

Book excerpt: During the past few decades we have witnessed at least two major innovations in science which have had substantial impact on technology as well as science itself, pervasive enough to modify many facets of our daily lives. We refer, of course, to the tran sistor and the laser. It is striking that now with the advent of optical bistability we may have opened the door to another such field, which combines these two aspects (transistor and laser) and has the possibility for important device applications as well as providing a unique window into the as yet not thoroughly explored frontiers of nonequilibrium statistical physics. This has prompted us to organize an international conference on the subject of optical bistability to provide an adequate means for assessing the current state of the art of this important field and to stimulate further significant developments by means of in tense technical exchange and interaction among the leading scien tists in this subject area.
