Book Different Worlds of Discourse

Download or read book Different Worlds of Discourse written by Nanxiu Qian and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late Qing reform era (1895-1912), women for the first time in Chinese history emerged in public space in collective groups. They assumed new social and educational roles and engaged in intense debates about the place of women in China's present and future. These debates found expression in new media, including periodicals and pictorials, which not only harnessed the power of existing cultural forms but also encouraged experimentation with a variety of new literary genres and styles - works increasingly produced by and for Chinese women. "Different Worlds of Discourse" explores the reform period from three interrelated and comparatively neglected perspectives: the construction of gender roles, the development of literary genres, and the emergence of new forms of print media.

The breath of life transport words that are spirit into life but there are diverse levels of life. If we lead an unfruitful life, it is safe to conclude that seed has been dispensed willy-nilly. Understand from this point forward that the tongue must be tamed as lives mirror or are reflected in conversation. Positioned within the lives is transformation from spirit life positive to negative, and this depends on purity of heart. The principle of creation by speech stands alone.

Book Consciousness And Quantum Mechanics Life In Parallel Worlds Miracles Of Consciousness From Quantum Reality

Download or read book Consciousness And Quantum Mechanics Life In Parallel Worlds Miracles Of Consciousness From Quantum Reality written by Michael B Mensky and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of consciousness includes mysterious aspects providing a basis for many spiritual doctrines (including religions) and psychological practices. These directions of human knowledge are usually considered to contradict the laws of science. However, quantum mechanics — in a sense, the mysterious direction of science — allows us to include the phenomena of consciousness and life as well as the relevant phenomena in the sphere of science.Wolfgang Pauli, one of the pioneers of quantum mechanics, together with great psychologist Carl Gustav Jung, guessed about the relation between quantum mechanics and consciousness in the beginning of the twentieth century. However, only “many-worlds” interpretation of quantum mechanics, proposed in 1957 by Hugh Everett III, gave the real basis for the systematic investigation of this relation.Roger Penrose, one of the apologists of the relation between quantum mechanics and consciousness, claimed in his Last book “The Road to Reality” that the Everett's interpretation may be estimated only after creating the theory of consciousness. Thereagainst, the author has proposed in 2000 and further elaborates in this book, the so-called Extended Everett's Concept, that allows one to derive the main features of consciousness and super-consciousness (intuition, or direct vision of truth) from quantum mechanics. This is exposed in this book in a form intelligible for a wide audience.

Book Children of Different Worlds

Download or read book Children of Different Worlds written by Beatrice Blyth Whiting and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of twenty years of research, this book is a cross-cultural exploration of the ways in which age, gender, and culture affect the development of social behavior in children. The authors and their associates observed children between the ages of two and ten going about their daily lives in communities in Africa, India, the Philippines, Okinawa, Mexico, and the United States. This rich fund of data has enabled them to identify the types of social behavior that are universal and those which differ from one cultural environment to another. Whiting and Edwards shed new light on the nature-nurture question: in analyzing the behavior of young children, they focus on the relative contributions of universal physiological maturation and universal social imperatives. They point out cross-cultural similarities, but also note the differences in experience between children who grow up in simple and in complex societies. They show that knowledge of the company children keep, and of the proportion of time they spend with various categories of people, makes it possible to predict important aspects of their interpersonal behavior. An extension and elaboration of the classic Children of Six Cultures (Harvard, 1975), Children of Different Worlds will appeal to the same audience--developmental psychologists, social psychologists, anthropologists, and educators--and is sure to be equally influential.

Book Parallel Worlds

Download or read book Parallel Worlds written by Linda R. Martin and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cristian and Linda grew up in the 1970s, living a half a world apart. Like many of us all over the world, we remember the same type of childhood with innocence, joy, laughter, routines, family, friends, holidays, favorite teacher, and the smell of our favorite food. All this not only means a lot to us but also shapes who we become as adults. As Cristian told the story of his life growing up in Eastern Europe from the time he was a very small child, Linda realized it wasn’t very different than her childhood—until it was very different. Cristian somehow understood the unbearable impacts of socialism on humanity at a very young age and idolized the freedoms of democracy. His story to escape the country he was born in and his determination to live in the country he talks about with such admiration made Linda feel so privileged to grow up in the United States of America.

Download or read book Parallel Worlds written by Kerry M. Hull and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent developments in epigraphy, ethnopoetics, and the literary investigation of colonial and modern materials, few studies have compared glyphic texts and historic Maya literatures. Parallel Worlds examines Maya writing and literary traditions from the Classic period until today, revealing remarkable continuities across time. In this volume, contributions from leading scholars in Maya literary studies examine Maya discourse from Classic period hieroglyphic inscriptions to contemporary spoken narratives, focusing on parallelism to unite the literature historically. Contributors take an ethnopoetic approach, examining literary and verbal arts from a historical perspective, acknowledging that poetic form is as important as narrative content in deciphering what these writings reveal about ancient and contemporary worldviews. Encompassing a variety of literary motifs, including humor, folklore, incantation, mythology, and more specific forms of parallelism such as couplets, chiasms, kennings, and hyperbatons, Parallel Worlds is a rich journey through Maya culture and pre-Columbian literature that will be of interest to students and scholars of anthropology, ethnography, Latin American history, epigraphy, comparative literature, language studies, indigenous studies, and mythology.

Book The Fetish Revisited

Download or read book The Fetish Revisited written by J. Lorand Matory and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early-modern encounter between African and European merchants on the Guinea Coast, European social critics have invoked African gods as metaphors for misplaced value and agency, using the term “fetishism” chiefly to assert the irrationality of their fellow Europeans. Yet, as J. Lorand Matory demonstrates in The Fetish Revisited, Afro-Atlantic gods have a materially embodied social logic of their own, which is no less rational than the social theories of Marx and Freud. Drawing on thirty-six years of fieldwork in Africa, Europe, and the Americas, Matory casts an Afro-Atlantic eye on European theory to show how Marx’s and Freud’s conceptions of the fetish both illuminate and misrepresent Africa’s human-made gods. Through this analysis, the priests, practices, and spirited things of four major Afro-Atlantic religions simultaneously call attention to the culture-specific, materially conditioned, physically embodied, and indeed fetishistic nature of Marx’s and Freud’s theories themselves. Challenging long-held assumptions about the nature of gods and theories, Matory offers a novel perspective on the social roots of these tandem African and European understandings of collective action, while illuminating the relationship of European social theory to the racism suffered by Africans and assimilated Jews alike.
