Book Opportunity The Hidden Side of Wealth

Download or read book Opportunity The Hidden Side of Wealth written by Ellen Boer; Peter Boer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-01-12 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opportunity is the hidden factor that explains why so many solutions proposed for today’s problems will fall far wide off the mark. Conventional and expensive proposals to solve many of the critical issues of our times, including ENERGY, CLIMATE CHANGE, COMMODITIZATION, THE DEMOGRAPHIC INVERSION (POPULATION), and CONFLICT will almost certainly go far astray if the element of OPPORTUNITY is disregarded. Conventional forecasts still take no account of what we know about opportunity, uncertainty, and risk. Changing circumstances inevitably create unforeseen opportunities. The error is compounded when policies lock societies into large commitments that fail to respect intrinsic uncertainty or unseen feedback effects. The author is an expert in the use of options theory and decision analysis in technology investment. These analytical tools are applied to the large issues of our times in this book: the desire for energy independence, halting climate change, the commoditization of industry, graying societies, and the resolution of human conflict. While disastrous policy prescriptions are hardly new to history, modern societies are doing far too little to use what they now know. Recognition of these basic errors will create competitive advantage for individual investors, businesses, and nations smart enough to avoid the pitfalls of the accepted wisdom. Dr. Boer’s Principles of Opportunity: 1. Keep the investment at risk low while the uncertainties are still high 2. The information needed to evaluate risk is the top priority 3. Things change–maintain your options and postpone large commitments 4. Break the investment process into a series of stages–each with an exit option 5. When risk is reasonable, large investments can be considered and options can be converted to assets.

Book Wealth Vs Work

Download or read book Wealth Vs Work written by Allan C. Ornstein and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wealth vs. Work: How 1% Victimize 99% is about the vanishing American dream, growing inequality inAmerica, shrinking and struggling middle class, plight of labor and unions, economic decline of the nation, and a broken and unstable world surrounding theU.S. Education is no longer the great equalizer. We are heading toward a world where inherited privilege trumps excellence and meritocracy. Carried far enough, it means the end of striving and the American dream. Few Americans realize or want to admit it. Since recorded history, workers have been victimized by the rich and super rich, treated as fungible and disposable. The early warlords and monarchs have been replaced by the titans of industry and masters of the universe on Wall Street. The slaves, peasants and serfs have been replaced by miners, factory workers, and service-sector workers. The GM model of the 1950s and 1960s (that permitted labor to become middle class) has been replaced by the Wal-Mart modelcharacterized by low pay and minimal benefits. By 2025, the economic output of China and India may likely each exceed the U.S. Moreover, the U.S. work force is being increasingly displaced by technology and outsourcing. But we are supposed to be the lucky ones! By historical and geographical accident, the U.S. has been spared most of the worlds poverty and misery. Today, however, the U.S. is heading towards a financial oligarchymuch worse than the aristocratic old world that our Founding Fathers feared and tried to avoid. Yes, the U.S. had a revolution, but in fact it has a new and more powerful elite because the economic pie has expanded several thousand fold since the yeoman farmers status was compared to the plantation owner. Right now the top 1 percent in the U.S. own nearly 40 percent of the nations wealth; moreover, their investments, capital gains and dividends are taxed at a lower rate than workers salaries. Like all great civilizations that have declined before us, we are a nation that needs to re-examine its ideals and institutions.

Book excerpt: NBA Blues is a cautionary tale that can serve as a handbook for any young athlete and their families facing the bittersweet taste of success in professional sports. Along with entertaining the reader, this book acts as a guide to help understand the pitfalls that come with financial success in professional sports. Most have a greater chance of becoming a business professional before he or she becomes a professional athlete, however, whether a young person has the talent and opportunity to become a professional athlete or a productive citizen in society, the proper guidance is necessary to maintain their success. Told in a compelling and engaging voice, this urban contemporary is creatively written with authentic characters. Although based on actual events, names and scenarios have been changed slightly to protect the innocent, and not so innocent. The message of the book is being presented in an educational and entertaining platform as author, Gerry Lancaster, renamed Gary Allen, shares his experiences while working as a personal assistant to a childhood friend who became a professional athlete. The real baller, renamed Vaughn Fisher (an Olympic Gold Medal Winner and four -time NBA All-star Player with earnings of over 100 million dollars) is the subject of the book. Vaughn was a talented athlete who attained his dream of playing professional basketball in the NBA, but the fame and fortune disappeared quickly as the thrill of making a basket was replaced by the thrill of getting a high from prescription drugs and alcohol. His story is told through the words of a friend who knew him from his humble beginnings, to the great heights of fame and back down the slippery slope of drugs, promiscuity and financial ruin. No one could tell the complete story unless they were actually there, and Gerry was.

Book The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership

Download or read book The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership written by Dennis Tourish and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most research into leadership has presented leaders as heroic, charismatic and transformational 'visionaries'. The leader, whether in business, politics or any other field, is the most important factor in determining whether organizations succeed or fail. Indeed, despite the fundamental mistakes which have, arguably, directly led to global economic recession, it is often still taken for granted that transformational leadership is a good thing, and that leaders should have much more power than followers to decide what needs to be done. The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership confronts this orthodoxy by illustrating how such approaches can encourage narcissism, megalomania and poor decision-making on the part of leaders, at great expense to those organizations they are there to serve. Written in a lively and engaging style, the book uses a number of case studies to illustrate the perils of transformational leadership, from the Jonestown tragedy in 1978 when over 900 people were either murdered or committed suicide at the urging of their leader, to an analysis of how banking executives tried to explain away their role in the 2008 financial crisis This provocative and hugely important book offers a rare critical perspective in the field of leadership studies. Concluding with a new approach that offers an alternative to the dominant transformational model, The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership will be an invaluable text for academics interested in leadership, students on leadership courses requiring a more critical perspective, and anyone concerned with how people lead people, and the lessons we can learn.
