Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Optics: Being an Essay Contributed to the American Encyclopedia of Ophthalmology Through the courtesies of Dr. Casey A. Wood, Editor-in-chief of The American Encyclopedia of Ophthalmology, and the publisher, Dr. Geo. Henry Cleveland, of the Cleveland Press, the writer of this monograph has been able to secure a limited number of reprints of the original essay for the use of students and practitioners who may be interested in the field of physiologic optics. The body of the text is in the form presented in Volume XIII of the Encyclopedia. Certain references to other volumes of the set have been changed in this reprint and a few additions deemed necessary by virtue of the isolation of this essay from its context have been placed in the Appendices. The present volume is neither a mere compilation nor does it consist of abstract theoretical discussions, but is a collection of the old and new scientific facts that have bearing upon the practical work of the refractionist and eye-practitioner. I hope that the reader will pardon any indulgence in details relative to some of the topics presented, but I feel that far too little attention is paid, in many cases, to the fundamentals and essentials underlying the science of optics as applied to visual phenomena and that a closer and keener study of these vital details will help make the "practical" man of the right type. I take pleasure in acknowledging my indebtedness to various authors and publishers who have put at my disposal, through the medium of the printed page, such materials as have helped greatly to make this volume what it is. I have drawn freely from the writings of von Helmholtz, Tscherning, Maddox, Stevens, Howe and Savage. In particular do I acknowledge the permission granted by the Editor and the Publisher of The American Encyclopedia of Ophthalmology, The Keystone Publishing Co. of Philadelphia, Dr. Savage, Dr. Howe, Dr. Stevens and Chas F. Prentice, M. E., to have reproduced, or to use the original cuts of, several diagrams and drawings from their books. Book The American Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Ophthalmology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Ophthalmology Classic Reprint written by Casey A. Wood and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Ophthalmology In adopting the strictly alphabetical sequence of subject-headings it has been necessary to review for the first volume practically the whole range of the literature of Ophthalmology and its related sciences. It will, as a consequence, easily be understood how difficult it has been to collect and treat with complete satisfaction all the subjects commencing with the first letter of the alphabet, that directly and indirectly relate to the eye and its diseases. However, it is the belief of the Editor and his collaborators that no topic of importance has been neglected. When a heading that quite evidently should have been noticed has been omitted or, more likely, if new topics of interest arise after the publication of the volume to which they belong, alphabetically, they will receive due attention in the appendix. In addition to the attempt to write and edit a comprehensive Encyclopedia of Ophthalmology the Editor has made an effort to combine with it a Dictionary of such English, Latin, French, German and Italian words and phrases as will be most useful to students of ophthalmology in general. This has been a heavy task, beset with many difficulties. In the first place, it is not an easy matter to decide whether a particular word or phrase is of ophthalmic interest, or not. Broadly speaking, the majority of medical and scientific subjects in the languages referred should be interesting and valuable to the educated ophthalmologist but, if most of the words and phrases utilized in general medicine and surgery were so included, the additions would pad this work to an unseemly degree. Even as it is, the inclusion of some of the terms already chosen (although they were all taken from ophthalmic text-books) may give rise to criticism and to the imputation of 0 mere "filling." It will, in this connection, be noticed that the array of German words is much larger than those in other languages. There are several reasons for this. In the first place, the German language occupies co a pre-eminent position in the world of science, and many Englishes speaking ophthalmologists have received a considerable portion of their foreign education in Germany and from Germans. Consequently, the excess of German words naturally represents the largest proportion of foreign literature accessible to the average English reader. Book Purkinje s Vision

Download or read book Purkinje s Vision written by Nicholas J. Wade and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2001-04-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Jan Evangelista Purkinje (1787-1869) has fascinated students from many disciplines. Histologists marvel at his early descriptions of cells; physiologists admire his attempts to relate structure to function; pharmacologists view in awe his heroic experiments on self-administered drugs; forensic scientists acknowledge his role in the use of fingerprints for identification; and Czech patriots salute his awakening of pride in their nation. Yet all these achievements followed his initial enquiries into vision. It is this psychological dimension that fostered this collaboration. As the title suggests, the present volume is bifocal. In the narrow sense it refers to Purkinje's studies of vision, but in its broader view it concerns Purkinje's anticipation of neuroscience. Purkinje provided evidence to support both its cellular and its conceptual base. At the cellular level his acute vision is immortalized within our bodies. At the conceptual level, he sought to relate subjective phenomena to their objective underpinnings--to link psychology to physiology. Vision provides a bond that unites psychology and physiology, and it is this bond that was strengthened by Purkinje's enquiries. The authors have tried to provide a context in which Purkinje's descriptions of visual phenomena can be placed. In some cases this exposes clear precursors of research for which Purkinje has been credited. In others, there was nothing to suggest the phenomena that he exposed. The book translates Purkinje's initial masterpiece on subjective vision and places it in the context of emerging views of neuroscience.

Book The Vitamin A Story

    Book Details:
  • Author : R.D. Semba
  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2013-07-01
  • ISBN : 331802189X
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Vitamin A Story written by R.D. Semba and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how vitamin A deficiency – before the vitamin was known to scientists – affected millions of people throughout history. It is a story of sailors and soldiers, penniless mothers, orphaned infants, and young children left susceptible to blindness and fatal infections. We also glimpse the fortunate ones who, with ample vitamin A-rich food, escaped this elusive stalker. Why were people going blind and dying? To unravel this puzzle, scientists around the world competed over the course of a century. Their persistent efforts led to the identification of vitamin A and its essential role in health. As a primary focus of today’s international public health efforts, vitamin A has saved hundreds of thousands of lives. But, we discover, they could save many more were it not for obstacles erected by political and ideological zealots who lack a historical perspective of the problem. Although exhaustively researched and documented, this book is written for intellectually curious lay readers as well as for specialists. Public health professionals, nutritionists, and historians of science and medicine have much to learn from this book about the cultural and scientific origins of their disciplines. Likewise, readers interested in military and cultural history will learn about the interaction of health, society, science, and politics. The author’s presentation of vitamin A deficiency is likely to become a classic case study of health disparities in the past as well as the present.

Book Islam and the Trajectory of Globalization

Download or read book Islam and the Trajectory of Globalization written by Louay M. Safi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the growing tension between social movements that embrace egalitarian and inclusivist views of national and global politics, most notably classical liberalism, and those that advance social hierarchy and national exclusivism, such as neoliberalism, neoconservatism, and national populism. In exploring issues relating to tensions and conflicts around globalization, the book identifies historical patterns of convergence and divergence rooted in the monotheistic traditions, beginning with the ancient Israelites that dominated the Near East during the Axial age, through Islamic civilization, and finally by considering the idealism-realism tensions in modern times. One thing remained constant throughout the various historical stages that preceded our current moment of global convergence: a recurring tension between transcendental idealism and various forms of realism. Transcendental idealism, which prioritize egalitarian and universal values, pushed periodically against the forces of realism that privilege established law and power structure. Equipped with the idealism-realism framework, the book examines the consequences of European realism that justified the imperialistic venture into Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America in the name of liberation and liberalization. The ill-conceived strategy has, ironically, engendered the very dysfunctional societies that produce the waves of immigrants in constant motion from the South to the North, simultaneously as it fostered the social hierarchy that transfer external tensions into identity politics within the countries of the North. The book focuses particularly on the role played historically by Islamic rationalism in translating the monotheistic egalitarian outlook into the institutions of religious pluralism, legislative and legal autonomy, and scientific enterprise at the foundation of modern society. It concludes by shedding light on the significance of the Muslim presence in Western cultures as humanity draws slowly but consistently towards what we may come to recognize as the Global Age. Download or read book Optics in Our Time written by Mohammad D. Al-Amri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light and light based technologies have played an important role in transforming our lives via scientific contributions spanned over thousands of years. In this book we present a vast collection of articles on various aspects of light and its applications in the contemporary world at a popular or semi-popular level. These articles are written by the world authorities in their respective fields. This is therefore a rare volume where the world experts have come together to present the developments in this most important field of science in an almost pedagogical manner. This volume covers five aspects related to light. The first presents two articles, one on the history of the nature of light, and the other on the scientific achievements of Ibn-Haitham (Alhazen), who is broadly considered the father of modern optics. These are then followed by an article on ultrafast phenomena and the invisible world. The third part includes papers on specific sources of light, the discoveries of which have revolutionized optical technologies in our lifetime. They discuss the nature and the characteristics of lasers, Solid-state lighting based on the Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, and finally modern electron optics and its relationship to the Muslim golden age in science. The book’s fourth part discusses various applications of optics and light in today's world, including biophotonics, art, optical communication, nanotechnology, the eye as an optical instrument, remote sensing, and optics in medicine. In turn, the last part focuses on quantum optics, a modern field that grew out of the interaction of light and matter. Topics addressed include atom optics, slow, stored and stationary light, optical tests of the foundation of physics, quantum mechanical properties of light fields carrying orbital angular momentum, quantum communication, and Wave-Particle dualism in action.

Book Medicine Preserving the Passion

Download or read book Medicine Preserving the Passion written by Phil R. Manning and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Medicine: Preserving the Passion, Phil R. Manning, a pioneer and recognized authority in continuing medical education, and Lois DeBakey, a passionate advocate of critical reasoning and leading scholar in scientific communication, endeavor to shift the focus in lifelong learning from group exercises in a lecture hall to self-directed, practice-related activities. Al though most experts have applauded this new concept, few publications have addressed methods for implementation. The Manning-DeBakey book describes such methods as devised by outstanding clinicians and acade micians to obtain educational benefit from their clinical experience. Some techniques inspired by quality assurance, for example, these master cli nicians have used successfully to improve their knowledge, skills, and patient care. This book not only identifies the primary concerns in con tinuing medical education, but also offers sound recommendations and effective solutions and suggests future directions and approaches. The authors have analyzed the continuing educational practices of phy sicians in a wide range of environments, from small communities to the most acclaimed medical centers, and have extracted additional advice from the writings of past authorities like Osler. The resulting concepts will un doubtedly attract wide public attention. Office practice audit, self-directed learning, case indexing, patient education, computer-assisted education, and collegial networks, as well as regular reading, writing, and teaching, are among the successful methods described by physicians and surgeons who exemplify the highest standards of medical practice.
