Henry Cleveland, of the Cleveland Press, the writer of this monograph has been able to secure a limited number of reprints of the original essay for the use of students and practitioners who may be interested in the field of physiologic optics. The body of the text is in the form presented in Volume XIII of the Encyclopedia. Certain references to other volumes of the set have been changed in this reprint and a few additions deemed necessary by virtue of the isolation of this essay from its context have been placed in the Appendices. The present volume is neither a mere compilation nor does it consist of abstract theoretical discussions, but is a collection of the old and new scientific facts that have bearing upon the practical work of the refractionist and eye-practitioner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Ophthalmology In adopting the strictly alphabetical sequence of subject-headings it has been necessary to review for the first volume practically the whole range of the literature of Ophthalmology and its related sciences. It will, as a consequence, easily be understood how difficult it has been to collect and treat with complete satisfaction all the subjects commencing with the first letter of the alphabet, that directly and indirectly relate to the eye and its diseases. However, it is the belief of the Editor and his collaborators that no topic of importance has been neglected. When a heading that quite evidently should have been noticed has been omitted or, more likely, if new topics of interest arise after the publication of the volume to which they belong, alphabetically, they will receive due attention in the appendix. In addition to the attempt to write and edit a comprehensive Encyclopedia of Ophthalmology the Editor has made an effort to combine with it a Dictionary of such English, Latin, French, German and Italian words and phrases as will be most useful to students of ophthalmology in general. This has been a heavy task, beset with many difficulties. In the first place, it is not an easy matter to decide whether a particular word or phrase is of ophthalmic interest, or not. Broadly speaking, the majority of medical and scientific subjects in the languages referred should be interesting and valuable to the educated ophthalmologist but, if most of the words and phrases utilized in general medicine and surgery were so included, the additions would pad this work to an unseemly degree. Even as it is, the inclusion of some of the terms already chosen (although they were all taken from ophthalmic text-books) may give rise to criticism and to the imputation of 0 mere "filling." It will, in this connection, be noticed that the array of German words is much larger than those in other languages. There are several reasons for this. In the first place, the German language occupies co a pre-eminent position in the world of science, and many Englishes speaking ophthalmologists have received a considerable portion of their foreign education in Germany and from Germans. Consequently, the excess of German words naturally represents the largest proportion of foreign literature accessible to the average English reader. Histologists marvel at his early descriptions of cells; physiologists admire his attempts to relate structure to function; pharmacologists view in awe his heroic experiments on self-administered drugs; forensic scientists acknowledge his role in the use of fingerprints for identification; and Czech patriots salute his awakening of pride in their nation. Yet all these achievements followed his initial enquiries into vision. It is this psychological dimension that fostered this collaboration. As the title suggests, the present volume is bifocal. In the narrow sense it refers to Purkinje's studies of vision, but in its broader view it concerns Purkinje's anticipation of neuroscience. Purkinje provided evidence to support both its cellular and its conceptual base. At the cellular level his acute vision is immortalized within our bodies. At the conceptual level, he sought to relate subjective phenomena to their objective underpinnings--to link psychology to physiology. Vision provides a bond that unites psychology and physiology, and it is this bond that was strengthened by Purkinje's enquiries. The authors have tried to provide a context in which Purkinje's descriptions of visual phenomena can be placed. In some cases this exposes clear precursors of research for which Purkinje has been credited. In others, there was nothing to suggest the phenomena that he exposed. The book translates Purkinje's initial masterpiece on subjective vision and places it in the context of emerging views of neuroscience.

Book excerpt: The book examines the growing tension between social movements that embrace egalitarian and inclusivist views of national and global politics, most notably classical liberalism, and those that advance social hierarchy and national exclusivism, such as neoliberalism, neoconservatism, and national populism. In exploring issues relating to tensions and conflicts around globalization, the book identifies historical patterns of convergence and divergence rooted in the monotheistic traditions, beginning with the ancient Israelites that dominated the Near East during the Axial age, through Islamic civilization, and finally by considering the idealism-realism tensions in modern times. One thing remained constant throughout the various historical stages that preceded our current moment of global convergence: a recurring tension between transcendental idealism and various forms of realism. Transcendental idealism, which prioritize egalitarian and universal values, pushed periodically against the forces of realism that privilege established law and power structure. Equipped with the idealism-realism framework, the book examines the consequences of European realism that justified the imperialistic venture into Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America in the name of liberation and liberalization. The ill-conceived strategy has, ironically, engendered the very dysfunctional societies that produce the waves of immigrants in constant motion from the South to the North, simultaneously as it fostered the social hierarchy that transfer external tensions into identity politics within the countries of the North. The book focuses particularly on the role played historically by Islamic rationalism in translating the monotheistic egalitarian outlook into the institutions of religious pluralism, legislative and legal autonomy, and scientific enterprise at the foundation of modern society. It concludes by shedding light on the significance of the Muslim presence in Western cultures as humanity draws slowly but consistently towards what we may come to recognize as the Global Age.
