Book Operational Plan Amendment Stock Assessment of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2022

Download or read book Operational Plan Amendment Stock Assessment of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2022 written by Matthew Albert and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Harding Lake, an updated estimate of northern pike abundance is needed to determine if the population is large enough to reopen the sport fishery. In this lake, the abundance of northern pike ≥ 450 mm FL declined from roughly 2,500 fish in 1993 to 500 in 1999. This decline was attributed to a loss of rearing habitat in shallow vegetated littoral areas and prompted the sport fishery to be closed in 2000. In 2007, water was diverted from Rogge Creek to raise the lake level and re-establish northern pike habitat. As of 2012, the population had not rebounded to its numbers in the early 1990s, and the sport-fishery has remained closed. This study will estimate the abundance and length-composition of northern pike ≥ 450 mm FL in Harding Lake using a two-event mark-recapture experiment to determine if, and in what capacity, the sport fishery is ready to be re-opened. The capture and recapture events will take place in June and August 2020.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of northern pike Esox lucius ≥450 mm fork length (FL) was estimated in Harding Lake during 2022 using a 2-sample mark–recapture experiment for a closed population. The first sampling event occurred 1–3 and 6–10 June and the second occurred 10–12, 16–18, 23, 25, and 30 August. Hook-and-line gear was used exclusively in both events. Estimated abundance of northern pike ≥450 mm FL was 949 (SE = 114; 90% CI = 761–1,137). Northern pike 450–599 mm FL made up 58% (SE = 9%) of the estimated population and fish ≥600 mm FL accounted for 42% (SE = 11%). The water level at Harding Lake has increased over the past 7 years and is currently at the target elevation of 717 ft above sea level. The higher water level has created and improved habitat for northern pike. This abundance estimate demonstrates that the northern pike population is continuing to increase along with the water level.

Book Estimated Abundance of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2012

Download or read book Estimated Abundance of Northern Pike in Harding Lake 2012 written by Klaus G. Wuttig and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of northern pike >450 mm FL was estimated in Harding Lake during 2012 using a 2-sample mark-recapture experiment for a closed population. The first event occurred during May 29-June 7 and a combination of gillnets, fyke nets, hoop traps, and hook-and-line was used to capture fish. The second event occurred during August 7-14 and hook-and-line gear was used exclusively. Abundance was estimated at 567 (SE=47) northern pike >450 mm FL. The length composition was divided into 25-mm length categories and the 550-574 category represented the largest segment (16%) of the estimated population. Harding lake has been closed to fishing for northern pike since the summer of 2000 and the estimated abundance of northern pike during 2012 was well below the minimum level of 1,000 fish >450 mm FL needed to open the fishery to catch-and-release. The low population size is attributed to the chronic loss of shallow littoral areas with emergent vegetation and the associated poor recruitment, which was first evident during the most recent stock assessment in 1999. The last stock assessment during which good recruitment of age-3 and -4 fish was observed occurred in 1996 and corresponded to cohorts from 1992 and 1993 when the water levels ranged between 717.5-717.8 ft ASL. Therefore, this range should be used as a target for reestablishing water levels and historic pike production using the water diversion structure on Rogge Creek. Water level in 2012 was measured at 714.0 ft ASL.

Book Lake Erie and Lake St Clair Handbook

Download or read book Lake Erie and Lake St Clair Handbook written by S. J. Bolsenga and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn about the wonders of Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair in this fascinating and readable book. The most comprehensive reference source available about the lakes, Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair Handbook is an ideal guide for anglers, boaters, swimmers, beach walkers—anyone who uses and enjoys the lakes. The handbook explains, in simple terms, the reasons for the scenic beauty and the natural events that occur in the coastal and offshore waters of Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair, including the St. Clair, Detroit, and Niagara rivers extending from Sarnia, Ontario, to Niagara-on-the-Lake, New York. Individual chapters focus on the land, air, water, and life forms that comprise the natural history and environment of the region—the shoreline topography, wind and weather patterns, water temperature cycles and water level changes, the ecology, and indigenous animal life. Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair Handbook enhances our understanding and appreciation of the lakes and their surroundings by addressing fundamental questions about the Lake Erie region: • how Lake Erie was formed through glacial processes • why daily and seasonal weather patterns occur • causes of the water currents and waves • causes of temperature patterns in the lakes • the location of productive reef features • the species of fish and birds found in the area • the importance of the wetlands • the effect of current and past pollution on the aquatic life in the lakes

Book Adaptive management of fisheries in response to climate change

Download or read book Adaptive management of fisheries in response to climate change written by Bahri, T., Vasconcellos, M., Welch, D.J., Johnson, J., Perry, R.I., Ma, X. & Sharma, R. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report aims to accelerate climate change adaptation implementation in fisheries management throughout the world. It showcases how flexibility can be introduced in the fisheries management cycle in order to foster adaptation, strengthen the resilience of fisheries, reduce their vulnerability to climate change, and enable managers to respond in a timely manner to the projected changes in the dynamics of marine resources and ecosystems. The publication includes a set of good practices for climate-adaptive fisheries management that have proven their effectiveness and can be adapted to different contexts, providing a range of options for stakeholders including the fishing industry, fishery managers, policymakers and others involved in decision-making. These good practices were linked to one or more of the three common climate-related impacts on fisheries resources: distributional change; productivity change; and species composition change. Therefore, these three impacts can serve as practical entry points to guide decision-makers in identifying good practice adaptation measures suitable for their local contexts. These good practices are based upon transferable experiences and lessons learned from the thirteen case studies across the globe and hopefully will contribute to greater uptake and implementation of climate-adaptive fisheries management measures on the ground.

This book was released on 2016-08-28 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on gene drive systems is rapidly advancing. Many proposed applications of gene drive research aim to solve environmental and public health challenges, including the reduction of poverty and the burden of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue, which disproportionately impact low and middle income countries. However, due to their intrinsic qualities of rapid spread and irreversibility, gene drive systems raise many questions with respect to their safety relative to public and environmental health. Because gene drive systems are designed to alter the environments we share in ways that will be hard to anticipate and impossible to completely roll back, questions about the ethics surrounding use of this research are complex and will require very careful exploration. Gene Drives on the Horizon outlines the state of knowledge relative to the science, ethics, public engagement, and risk assessment as they pertain to research directions of gene drive systems and governance of the research process. This report offers principles for responsible practices of gene drive research and related applications for use by investigators, their institutions, the research funders, and regulators.
