Book OPERATIONAL EVALUATION OF DRY THIN FILM LUBRICATED BEARINGS AND GEARS FOR USE IN AEROSPACE ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMBERS

Download or read book OPERATIONAL EVALUATION OF DRY THIN FILM LUBRICATED BEARINGS AND GEARS FOR USE IN AEROSPACE ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMBERS written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the results of a test program set up to determine the operational characteristics of dry, thin film lubricated bearings and gears, uniquely adapted for operation in a simulated space environment. Results indicate that dry, thin film lubricants and soft metal plating lubricants can be applied satisfactorily to certain types of bearings and gears and are capable of sustaining heavy loads at slow speeds in space environments.

Book Tests of Dry Composite Lubricated Bearings for Use in an Aerospace Environmental Chambber

Download or read book Tests of Dry Composite Lubricated Bearings for Use in an Aerospace Environmental Chambber written by T. L. Ridings and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the results of a test program set up to determine thehe operational characteristics of dry composite lubricated bearings. Two different bearing types were tested: tapered roller bearings and ball bearings. Four dry composite lubricants and two low vapor pressure greases were tested. Results indicate that the dry composite lubricants were more successful when used with ball bearings than when used with tapered roller bearings. All four composite lubricants provided low system torques (40 to 60 lb-in.) under heavy loads (3000 lb/bearing) for the scheduled 100 hours. Best results were obtained using Cu (copper) and PTFE (Teflon) and WSe2 (tungsten diselenide) and a silver alloy + PTFE + WSe2. One low vapor pressure grease was successful as a lubricant at room temperature but migrated at temperatures above room temperature. The other low vapor pressure grease was successful at temperatures up to 140 F with no migration. (Author).

Book Development and Design Criteria for a Dry Film Lubricated Bearing System

Download or read book Development and Design Criteria for a Dry Film Lubricated Bearing System written by M. E. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extent to which dry lubricant films could be used in future bearing systems for electrical accessory applications was determined. In Phase I, twenty each, dry film lubricated 20 millimeter bore, plain, ball and roller bearings were tested in 900 F air at 15,000 rpm with a 75 pound radial and a 25 pound axial load. All available bonded dry film lubricant coatings were applied to the bearings and tested. None were satisfactory. Two different bearing designs, which used an unconventional dry film lubrication technique, demonstrated the feasibility of operation at 15,000 rpm in 900 F air. In Phase II, roller and ball bearings were evaluated through the temperature range 70 to 1500 F at 15,000 rpm in a vacuum. The vacuum levels attained ranged between 5 x 10 to the minus 4 power mm Hg to 5 x 10 to the minus 6 power mm Hg. The initial tests in vacuum conducted on the two successful Pi bearing designs resulted in early failures. These tests showed that the dry film lubricants, which were satisfactory in air, were entirely inadequate for vacuum operation. There fore an investigation was initiated to develop new materials which would provide dry film lubrication under vacuum conditions. Over 400 compositions of dry lubricant and metal powders were fabricated using powder metallurgy techniques. Friction, wear, thermal expansion and fracture strength of these materials were determined. (Author).

Book Evaluation of Solid Film Lubricated and Unlubricated Gears in Dry Helium Atmosphere Final Report

Download or read book Evaluation of Solid Film Lubricated and Unlubricated Gears in Dry Helium Atmosphere Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation of dry films for application on spur gears for - servicing components of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor was performed. Commercial dry film lubricants were screened in wear tests to obtain the optimum lubricant which was in turn used in gear teats. A MoS2, graphite, and sodium silicate binder lubricant (Everlube 811 or equivalent) applied to M 50 tool steel gears resulted in the optimum combination based on stress cycle tests. Tests were performed on uniubricated worm gears at simulated loads, speeds, and environment of the charging machine for the above reactor to determine wear rates and efficiencies. (auth).

Book On the Correlation of Specific Film Thickness and Gear Pitting Life

Download or read book On the Correlation of Specific Film Thickness and Gear Pitting Life written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of the lubrication regime on gear performance has been recognized, qualitatively, for decades. Often the lubrication regime is characterized by the specific film thickness defined as the ratio of lubricant film thickness to the composite surface roughness. It can be difficult to combine results of studies to create a cohesive and comprehensive dataset. In this work gear surface fatigue lives for a wide range of specific film values were studied using tests done with common rigs, speeds, lubricant temperatures, and test procedures. This study includes previously reported data, results of an additional 50 tests, and detailed information from lab notes and tested gears. The dataset comprised 258 tests covering specific film values (0.47 to 5.2). The experimentally determined surface fatigue lives, quantified as 10-percent life estimates, ranged from 8.7 to 86.8 million cycles. The trend is one of increasing life for increasing specific film. The trend is nonlinear. The observed trends were found to be in good agreement with data and recommended practice for gears and bearings. The results obtained will perhaps allow for the specific film parameter to be used with more confidence and precision to assess gear surface fatigue for purpose of design, rating, and technology development.
