Book Operational Aspects of a Forward Support Battalion Participating in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm

Download or read book Operational Aspects of a Forward Support Battalion Participating in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm written by Daniel L. Fairchild and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations in the deserts of Southwest Asia presented enormous challenges to a forward support battalion supporting a heavy maneuver brigade during Operations Desert Shield and DESERT STORM. Most of these challenges were METT-T driven. Logistics doctrine of forward support proved to be basically sound, but unachievable at times. Perhaps the most significant lesson learned was the validation of the sustainment imperatives advocated by Airland Battle doctrine. The imperatives of anticipation, integration, continuity, responsiveness, and improvisation were the key to logistics success in a theater of operations. void of many taken for granted resources and necessities. Other lessons were learned concerning movement to contact operations, tailoring combat service support assets for deep operations, equipment modifications, equipment and personnel authorizations, and the brigade support area's design. The ten weeks of post combat operations represented the best training period in the battalion's history. In addition to sustaining a brigade task force, humanitarian care and supplies were provided to hundreds of civilian refugees and enemy prisoners of war fleeing Saddam Hussein's reign of terror in post war southern Iraq.

Book The 54th Forward Support Battalion in Desert Shield Desert Storm

Download or read book The 54th Forward Support Battalion in Desert Shield Desert Storm written by Roslyn M. Goff and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From May 31, 1989 to June 6, 1991, I commanded the 54th Forward Support Battalion (FSB) supporting Third Brigade, Third Armor Division in Friedberg, Germany. This great battalion has many achievements to its credit but none so outstanding as its performance in the Southwest Asian Theater of Operations from early January to mid June 1991. I write this monograph for several reasons. First, to give due credit to the incredible courage and determination of the soldiers who never failed to surprise me with what they accomplished in the most trying of circumstances. Second, to illustrate that there is no substitute for training in preparation for war. Lastly, to discuss several logistic issues that require the attention of the Army leadership. I discuss the experience from the perspective of a forward deployed CSS commander. Therefore, a good deal of the discussion focuses on logistics rather than the details of battle. However, Appendix A provides a general timeline that may aid the reader. At Appendix B is the VII Corps Deployment and Plan of attack in which Third Armor Division participated. it will help place the reader geographically. At Appendix Care the graphics of the Third Armor Division's campaign, Operation Desert Spear 24-28 February 1991.

Book United States Army Special Forces In DESERT SHIELD DESERT STORM How Significant An Impact

Download or read book United States Army Special Forces In DESERT SHIELD DESERT STORM How Significant An Impact written by Major William M. Johnson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the contributions made by the U.S. Army Special Forces (SF) during the Persian Gulf conflict. Particular emphasis is placed on each mission performed by the SF during operations DESERT SHIELD/ DESERT STORM. Emphasis is placed initially on the building-block foundation of how a Special Forces Group (Airborne) is organized, paying particular attention to the operational A-detachment and the makeup of the SF soldier, which is paramount to this study. Brief accounts and descriptions are made of the various missions assigned to SF's coalition warfare support, which involved providing "ground truth" and close air support to the Arab-allied units, border surveillance; direct action; special reconnaissance; and combat search and rescue. This provides a base of knowledge into the myriad of operations conducted by the SF during Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM. The study concludes by examining published quotes from key leadership within the Department of Defense which provides this study with a measurable means of determining what significance the missions executed by the SF did have on the success of DESERT SHIELD/STORM.

Book War in the Persian Gulf

Download or read book War in the Persian Gulf written by Richard Winship Stewart and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2010 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, the Persian Gulf War captured the attention of the world as the first test of the U.S. Army since the Vietnam War and the first large-scale armor engagement since World War II. Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait and his subsequent ouster by the U.S.-led coalition are keys to understanding today's situation in the Middle East. The coalition partnerships cemented in that initial operation and in the regional peacekeeping operations that followed provided the basis for a growing series of multinational efforts that have characterized the post-Cold War environment. Moreover, the growing interoperability of U.S. air, sea, and land forces coupled with the extensive employment of more sophisticated weapons first showcased in Desert Storm have become the hallmark of American military operations and the standard that other nations strive to meet.

Book Lessons from the Desert

Download or read book Lessons from the Desert written by Stephen J. Marshman and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper records the major experiences of the 498th Support Battalion, 2d Armored Division (Forward), during that unit's involvement in Operations DESERT SHIELD and STORM/ The 498th was a unique unit, well-suited for the gamut of operations conducted by 2 AD (FWD) during its stay in SWA. The author commanded the 498th Support Battalion from June 1989 until June 1991, throughout preparatory training in Germany and the period of Deployment. Portrayed herein are the diversity of missions and challenges faced by the entire 2d Armored Division (Forward), and the ingenuity and flexibility of logistical soldiers as they met their particularly challenges. Organized essentially as a separate brigade support battalion, the 498th Support Battalion was substantially more robust than divisional forward support battalions. This structure made the organization more flexible and capable . Because the 198th was organic to the brigade it supported, it was thoroughly integrated into the combat team. The flexibility and capability of this structure argues for a more robust Forward Support Battalion, perhaps even at the expense of other Division Support Command assets. In these days of declining resources, a more robust FSB, better teamed with a maneuver brigade, may be the basis for a workable, alternative CSS structure.

Book 1st Battalion 37th Armor Rear Detachment Operations and Family Support Group Activities During the Gulf War

Download or read book 1st Battalion 37th Armor Rear Detachment Operations and Family Support Group Activities During the Gulf War written by Edward L. Dyer and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1st Battalion, 37th Armor was alerted for deployment to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in November 1990 and deployed with the 1st Armored Division. Throughout the preparation for deployment and the deployment itself, important lessons were learned in the organization and operation of a rear detachment and Family Support Group at the battalion level. Many of the problems encountered were unique to units that deployed from Germany. Some were unique to 1-37 Armor because it was detached from its parent brigade which remained in Germany, and attached to another brigade for the duration of the deployment. However, many of the lessons are applicable to all army units. This paper describes 1-37 Armor's Rear Detachment and Family Support Group operations during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and the problems encountered, and offers some recommendations to solve the problems for future deployments.
