Book Operation Swamp Fox i Terrain and Soil Trafficability Observations

Download or read book Operation Swamp Fox i Terrain and Soil Trafficability Observations written by Barton G. Schreiner and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period of 21 August to 1 October 1961, the U.S. Army Transportation Corps conducted Operation Swamp Fox I in Panama. It was concluded that gullies, rivers, vegetation, slope, and wet surface-soil conditions were significant obstacles to vehicle movement. Because of difficult going conditions for conventional wheeled vehicles, they had to be dropped from the operation early in the program. The steep slopes appeared to present the greatest problem because of their frequency of occurrence. Vegetation effects were minimized by removing sufficient trees and underbrush from the trail to permit vehicles to pass without great difficulty. The use of structural diagrams proved to be a quick objective method for describing vegetation. In general, the soils encountered during the operation were strong enough to support the vehicles used in the operation. On the basis of the limited traffic tests conducted, it appears that the instruments and techniques used to determine the trafficability characteristics of fine-grained soils in humid-temperate climates are adequate for the determination of trafficability of tropical soils in Panama. Further testing is recommended. (Author).

Book Earth Science Applied to Military Use of Natural Terrain

Download or read book Earth Science Applied to Military Use of Natural Terrain written by Stanley M. Needleman and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of the state-of-the-art in the evaluation of natural terrain by earth-science techniques and measurement systems is presented in response to a need that existed for many years. This report considers the terrain as an envelope of the environment and all related parameters that are basic in an evaluation for relevant military applications such as unimproved landing areas, trafficability, site selection for operational facilities, terrain reconnaissance and surveillance, and target detection within a masked terrain complex. Methods of terrain-data acquisition, analysis, and evaluation and their limitations are reviewed. The status of research and development, specifying the gaps in technology, is summarized with accompanying conclusions. The report forecasts the requirement for an automated terrain-data acquisition, storage, and display system. Information pertaining to the classification of terrain data, field devices to measure bearing strength, and a visualized optimum remote sensing system is also given in the appendix. A glossary and a comprehensive bibliography are included. (Author).

Book Canal Zone Environment

Download or read book Canal Zone Environment written by Robert L. Anstey and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Sector, Canal Zone, contains numerous areas favorable for testing or training in tropical environments under the political jurisdiction of the United States. The climate of this area is tropical wet-and-dry, typical of savanna areas. Seasonal differences in climate are significant in testing program results. The dry season is not representative of wet-tropical conditions, and testing conducted an this sector during this time would not yield the same results as that conducted in a true wet-tropical environment. Vegetation consists primarily of tropical deciduous forests on the uplands and marsh plants or swamp on the lowlands. Dense vegetation tends to grow in forest clearings. Inland the landscape consists of numerous low rounded hills; costal benches and terraces are fringed by wide mud flats exposed only at low tide. Representative savanna areas may be found in the Rio Hato Military Reservation, 64 miles west of the Canal Zone in the Republic of Panama. (Author).
