The Soviets felt that they were fighting the Germans by themselves. Stalin demanded Britain open a second front to draw German forces away from the east. Though the advice Churchill received from his staff was that an invasion of France would not be possible for at least another year, the British Prime Minister knew he had to do something to help the Russians. The result was a large-scale raid upon the port of Dieppe, chosen as it was thought that the success of any invasion would depend on the capture of a major port to enable heavy weapons, vehicles, and reinforcements to be landed in support of the landing forces. It would not be the second front that Stalin wanted, but at least it would demonstrate Britain’s intent to support the Soviets. Plus, it provided a rehearsal for the eventual invasion. The raid upon Dieppe, Operation Jubilee, was eventually scheduled for 19 August 1942. The assault was the most ambitious Allied attack against the German Channel defenses of the war so far, involving some 6,000 infantry, 237 naval vessels, and seventy-four squadrons of aircraft. Though the debate surrounding Jubilee’s purpose and cost has raged in the years since the war, many vital and important lessons were learned. All these factors are covered in this official battle summary, a detailed and descriptive account of the Dieppe Raid, which was written shortly after the war and is based on the recollections of those who were involved.

Book excerpt: On 19 August 1942, an Allied amphibious raid took place on the coastal town of Dieppe in northern France, when a force of some 6,500 infantry soldiers, predominantly Canadian, and supported by a number of tanks were landed by ships of the Royal Navy under a blanket of cover provided by the RAF. The official reason for the raid was to capture the town's port, gather relevant intelligence, and destroy a number of coastal defenses, port structures and other identified buildings. Allied authorities believed the raid would not only provide a much-needed boost to Allied morale, but also demonstrate to Stalin that Britain and the United States were serious in their commitment to opening a second front, in order to help the Soviet army fighting on the Eastern Front. It has also been suggested that the real reason for the raid was to capture a new German 4-rotor Enigma code machine, along with related code books. Whatever the reasons for the raid, it was an unmitigated failure. The German defenses were more formidable than intelligence reports suggested they would be, Allied aerial and naval support was insufficient, meaning soldiers were unable to achieve their objectives, and most of the tanks failed to make it off the beaches. Indeed, due to the unexpected mounting casualties, the decision was taken to cut short the raid and evacuate the remaining men.

Other troops the men of the 2nd Canadian Division landed closer to Dieppe to capture the German positions that overlooked the port while, minutes later, the main body of the predominantly Canadian assaulting force began clambering from landing craft that had run onto the beach along Dieppes seafront. This was the start of Operation Jubilee, the Allies most ambitious assault upon Hitlers so-called Fortress Europe it quickly became a bloodbath. The early months of 1942 had been difficult ones for Prime Minister Churchill. Stalin was demanding action in Western Europe to lessen the pressure of the 280 German divisions that were bearing down upon Stalingrad. Roosevelt was insisting that U.S. soldiers must start fighting the Germans in Europe, and Mackenzie King, the Canadian Prime Minister, desperately needed Canadian troops to become involved in the war to keep his politically divided nation together. Churchills response to these measures was to authorize a super-raid upon German-held territory, and the target selected by the planners was Dieppe. Apart from the notable success of No.4 Commando, the raid was a disaster with more than 50 per cent of the 6,086 men who landed being killed, wounded, or taken prisoner, plus all the Churchill tanks landed in support of the infantry suffered mechanical failure or were shelled into smoking wrecks. Yet amid the scenes slaughter, of confusion, and communication breakdown, were acts of almost unimaginable heroism, ingenuity, determination, and self-sacrifice to which the awarding of two Victoria Crosses paid a worthy tribute. There were also special missions associated with the raid, the details of which remained a closely guarded secret until long after the war. This book opens a window on Operation Jubilee, allowing the reader a rare insight into the death and destruction inflicted upon the Allied force during just a few hours, and of the damage done to Dieppe itself, with many of the photographs being taken by the victorious German defenders. The raid saw the heaviest casualty figures experienced by Canadians in the Second World War, and the photographs in this book are a stark reminder of that fateful day in late summer of 1942.

Operation Jubilee was a frontal assault on a fortified port landing the latest equipment and armor directly on to the beach. The main force would destroy the port facilities while other smaller landings dealt with anti-aircraft and coastal batteries. The raid itself turned into a fiasco. The assault force was pinned down on the beach and three quarters of the 5,000 troops landed were lost. This book analyses the disastrous raid and examines contrasting conclusions drawn by the Allies and the Germans. There is no doubt that the raid in force on Dieppe in August 1942 was one of the most controversial episodes of the Second World War. The Allied loss of life and numbers of prisoners taken, especially amongst the Canadians, led to much recrimination and not a little heated argument. On the face of it the raid was an unmitigated disaster, with virtually none of the objectives achieved. From its outset the plan was seriously flawed, but the momentum to open at least a symbolic second front to help the struggling Russians overruled more sober analysis. Enemy resistance along the shoreline succeeded in pinning down the invading forces, destroying the best part of them while they were still aboard their landing craft or as they tried to get off the beaches. It is now fashionable to see the raid as a rehearsal for D-Day and some justification for the great loss of life is claimed by the many lessons that were learned from the debacle regarding combined operations. Indeed, the military establishment would have had to been incompetent not to have learned anything from such a foul-up, and these lessons did contribute to the success of the Normandy invasion.
