Book excerpt: Operation Diver' is the story of a battle: its action, people, landscapes, and remains. The battle was Anti-Aircraft Command's attempt to defeat the V1 flying-bomb, the first of Nazi Germany's 'retribution' weapons, whose attacks dominated the home front in the final year of the Second World War. Beginning in the week of D-Day, the flying bomb battle lasted for nine months. In that time the men and women of AA Command became a massed, mobile army, shifting a vast carpet of guns to meet the V1's changing lines of attack. Beginning in Kent and Sussex, their journey took in the Thames Estuary, East Anglia and eventually the Yorkshire coast. Along with the RAF's fighter aircraft and the larger air defence system, their mission was to prevent a single flying bomb from reaching London, or any other British city. The battle was won; but not before many technical and human obstacles were overcome.

Book excerpt: 1944. The Second World War still rages, engulfing the entire world. For George Yeoman of the 380 Squadron of Mosquito fighter-bombers, it often feels like the war has gone on forever, with no end in sight. Most of the men he began serving with at the start of the war are long dead, with replacements appearing almost every day to take the place of the casualties. Like many of his fellow pilots, Yeoman is overworked and on edge, a hair's breadth from collapsing entirely. But, as is the nature of war, he must keep on for Queen and country and the victory of the Allied world... When intelligence is smuggled from the Continent to England that reveals the Germans have constructed a deadly new weapon, Yeoman and his fellow airmen face a desperate new challenge. The devastating V-1 robot bomb threatens plans for an Allied invasion. Capable of causing appalling damage to a London wearing of bloodshed and war, the bomb's menace returns Londoners to a state of fear worse than that experienced during the Blitz. Powerful, dangerous, and seemingly unstoppable, the V-1 poses a challenge to the brave aircrews of the Allied forces, who seek to destroy Germany's latest invention without destroying themselves in the process. The countermeasures against the V-1 flying bomb campaign are dubbed Operation Diver. Yeoman's squadron is tasked with wrecking German launching pads and blowing up undergrown arsenals, a dangerous mission in itself that threatens death by flak, but one far less perilous than trying to take out the bombs after they have been launched. If the Mosquitos mistime their aerial attacks on the V-1s, death can come even sooner. Yeoman must keep up not only his own spirits, but those of his men, through some of the war's darkest days. Yet those in power keep him in the dark about the true nature of some of his missions, the truth about which he must never know... Robert Jackson was born in 1941 and educated at the Richmond School in Yorkshire. A full-time author since 1969, he has written over fifty books. He speaks five languages and specialises in aviation and military history, with his own extensive travel and experiences strongly influencing his work. He has flown a wide variety of aircraft, ranging from jets to gliders, and was previously a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Operation Diver is one of seven books featuring George Yeoman. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent digital publisher. It continues to be a leading textbook in our training, due to its technical accuracy, current content, photos, and illustrations. Safety and efficiency are pinnacle traits that any successful working diver must learn in their training and constantly apply in the field. Safety is not a simply a rule book, it is a state of mind. Hal Lomax’s approach to this and sharing his knowledge with all levels of divers has made our industry safer and advanced it entirely. At the very core of commercial diver training are two essential objectives: Going up and down in the water column safely and performing useful and effective work underwater. This textbook continues to provide both objectives into a current and well written resource for the entire industry. It remains a must for anyone’s library involved in commercial diving.” Don Barthelmess, Professor Emeritus, Santa Barbara City College Marine Diving Technology Department

Book Commercial Diver Training Manual 6th Edition

Download or read book Commercial Diver Training Manual 6th Edition written by Hal Lomax and published by Best Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updates in the 6th Edition - Comprehensive rewrite can be used as stand-alone reference - Extensive index - Easy-to-read formatting - Color photos/tables/figures added - Colorful book cover ABOUT THE BOOK The 6th Edition of the Commercial Diver Training Manual represents an almost total rewrite. Where previous editions were designed to be utilized in conjunction either with the NOAA Diving Manual or the U.S. Navy Diving Manual, the 6th Edition has been written as a stand-alone work that covers history, physics, physiology, diving medicine, and first aid in addition to those chapters devoted to diving technique, diving equipment, and working underwater. This manual is presented with the understanding that fully qualified instructors experienced in underwater work will provide any further explanation required by the reader. At the same time, the intent was to provide a manual to enhance both the theoretical and the practical training of the diver, with a view to providing graduates that are more knowledgeable and well informed in their chosen trade, performing their assigned tasks in a safe and productive manner. To that end, this manual strives to present the following: - Diving physics in a clear, concise manner - The latest theory and procedure in physiology and diving medicine - The latest in practice and procedure both inland and offshore - The most commonly used diving and support equipment accepted for use in today’s industry While it is understood it would require several volumes to address every conceivable task performed on every type of underwater project employing commercial divers, this manual endeavors to cover the most commonly performed tasks and the most common underwater operations. By presenting these more common projects and tasks in detail, it is hoped the reader will be better informed and better prepared for a career underwater. In addition, by further illustrating both technique and safety concerns with case studies and personal accounts from the author’s career, the manual shows the reader these are more than just words being presented: suggestions help the reader become more proficient and safety guidelines keep the reader from injury or death.

Book Underwater Forensic Investigation Second Edition

Download or read book Underwater Forensic Investigation Second Edition written by Ronald F. Becker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evidence discovered at underwater crime scenes must be handled with the same attention to proper chain of custody procedures as with any other type of investigation. Improper handling of these scenes can lead to evidence being lost, unrecognizable, destroyed, contaminated, or rendered inadmissible at the time of trial. Updated and expanded, Underwater Forensic Investigation, Second Edition presents a comprehensive approach to the processing of an underwater crime scene and the steps necessary to conduct the operation. The book summarizes the history, physics, and laws applicable to underwater investigations and includes topics such as team formation, roles, deployment, and accountability. Explaining procedures that can make a true difference in the final outcome of water-related incidents, the author also debunks myths associated with submerged evidence. This second edition contains several new chapters on photography, contaminated sites, preservation of evidence, and release of the crime scene, and includes expanded information on death investigation and organizing the dive team. Nearly 100 color illustrations supplement the text. The science of water-related investigations is still in its infancy, and hence, the field needs accurate and useful sources of education. This text will assist law enforcement professionals and those in other areas of public safety in gaining the knowledge that has historically been lacking. The incorporation of the procedures presented will enable those tasked with working these scenes to develop a greater degree of professionalism, objectivity, thoroughness, and accuracy relating to the investigation of water-related incidents—increasing the chance for successful resolution of these difficult cases.
