Ships' tracks to, in, and from the Antarctic and locations of all oceanographic stations are given. In Eastern Balleny Basin, surface temperatures ranged from -0.44 to -1.58 C. Within the surface layer, temperature decreased to a depth of about 100 meters and then increased to a maximum of greater than 1.25 C, indicating the upper level of the Antarctic Circumpolar Water. Surface salinities were low (less than 34.00%). Values increased rapidly to 34.50% in the upper 200 meters with salinity maxima occurring between 600 and 1,200 meters depth. A west-east line of stations taken in McMurdo Sound is discussed. An extremely low temperature structure was noted, with temperatures from surface to bottom not exceeding 0.00 C throughout the water column. The effects of ice in the area were evident by low surface temperatures and salinities. Below the surface layer, temperatures decreased gradually to values as low as -1.93 C near the bottom of the deeper stations. Throughout the areas temperatures were less than 0 C, the degree of coldness indicating distance from the Ross Ice Shelf. (Author).

Book excerpt: Oceanographic observations were conducted aboard USS EDISTO (AGB-2) during DEEP FREEZE 63 and USS ATKA (AGB-3) during DEEP FREEZE 64. Emphasis was focused on the distribution of water masses in the Ross Sea and the identifying physical characteristics of each type. NAVOCEANO personnel obtained data at 122 stations during DF-63 and at 79 stations during DF-64. Included in these totals are 23 annual ice forecasting stations which were reoccupied both years along the Victoria Land coast and in McMurdo Sound to determine sea ice potential by the heat budget reversal. The stations occupied on DF-63 were in the western half of the Ross Sea and most of those occupied on DF-64 were in the eastern half. Station data include vertical distribution of observed temperatures, salinities, dissolved oxygens, and phosphate-phosphorus and machine computed densities, specific volume anomalies, dynamic height anomalies, and sound velocities. Selected cross-section profiles of observed physical and chemical properties are presented to illustrate the water masses in the Ross Sea. Water types are defined and discussed. From the data presented, it is evident that warmer water from oceanic depths moves in over the continental shelf and is forced to the surface causing the central Ross Sea to become ice free earlier than surrounding areas. Additionally, there is evidence of the formation of colder, more dense, Shelf Water during the austral winter which acts as a barrier to this warmer water intrusion into the south-southwestern extremities of the sea. Book excerpt: Procedures for preparing short-range (48-hour) forecasts and long-range (15- and 30-day) estimates of austral summer sea ice conditions in the western Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound are given. Magnitude and direction of short-period ice drift are related to pack concentration, topography, and thickness, surface currents, and forecasted surface wind velocities. Long-period ice estimates are based on analog techniques relating various environmental factors to pack growth, extent, and disintegration as well as using the progression of ice melt indicated by selected historical data. Examples of short-range ice forecasts and long-range estimates are given. Techniques are included for interpreting sea ice from satellite imagery.
