Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A coup attempt in the Maldives in November 1988 sent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom into hiding. Mal flashed desperate SOS messages to several countries seeking military assistance. India was prompt in extending the requisite support. Operation Cactus was launched to rescue President Gayoom and restore his democratically elected government. The decision to launch the airborne operation more than 2,500 km away was deliberate, bold, and sufficiently contemplated by the political and the military leadership of India. The Indian Air Force promptly airlifted the paratroopers of the Indian Army to Hulule Island. The Indian Navy joined in to buttress the effort of the Army and Air Force. Exemplary synergy among the three Services and the diplomatic corps was the hallmark of Operation Cactus.

Book Operation KE

  • Author : Dennis R Letourneau
  • Publisher : Naval Institute Press
  • Release : 2012-11-15
  • ISBN : 1612511791
  • Pages : 418 pages

Download or read book Operation KE written by Dennis R Letourneau and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation KE explores the air combat that attended the Japanese evacuation of Guadalcanal in early 1943 —a topic which has hitherto received very little attention. Operation KE was successful largely because Japanese strategic planning and tactical execution was basically sound. The traditional view holds that the Japanese got away with the initiative largely because the Americans let them; the US Pacific high command felt it was not worth the effort to try and stop them. Letourneau contends that this was not entirely the case. He argues that the Cactus Air Force and Guadalcanal-based naval units did their best to disrupt the evacuation, still believing that the Tokyo Express was bringing reinforcements and supplies to the 17th Army. Other US forces in the South Pacific did make a half-hearted and questionably-executed attempt to stop the Japanese, but were bluffed into adopting a ""wait-and-see"" posture. Operation KE focuses on the air war fought between the Cactus and US 13th Air Forces on the one hand and the Japanese Navy and Army Air Forces on the other, from mid-December, 1942 to mid-February, 1943. The book scrutinizes the US air strikes against the six KE-related Tokyo Express destroyer runs, plus related air strikes against the Japanese merchant marine, as well as air and naval base-suppression missions undertaken by both sides, to determine what actually happened in order to analyze why the Japanese evacuation succeeded and why Cactus failed to stop it. Background chapters attempt to assess the respective states of readiness of the Japanese and US air arms in the South Pacific to support on the one hand and counter on the other the execution of Operation KE. The central portion of the book narrates in some detail what actually occurred in the air and at sea -—including air strikes, fighter sweeps, base suppression missions, and naval sorties -—during the crucial prelude to and the actual playing out of the interrelated events that comprised the evacuation operation. Concluding chapters analyze, on both strategic and tactical levels, the Japanese planning and execution of Operation KE, and Cactus' initiatives to interdict KE's successful prosecution. The authors conclude that both the Japanese and the American states of readiness on the eve of Operation KE suffered in such matters as optimizing both resources and operating procedures, and combating a hostile environment. Consequently, both combatants were somewhat handicapped in their abilities respectively to carry out and contest Operation KE. The author contends that the Japanese developed a reasonably sound strategy that exploited those methods and tools of war then in use in the South Pacific; to achieve success, they maximized their own strengths while taking advantage of their adversary's limitations. Contrary to the traditional view, the authors are of the opinion that Japanese utilization of their newly-built airstrip at Munda in the Central Solomons played an important role in the success of Operation KE, which was in keeping with the long-range intention of developing Munda and Vila airstrips as major forward airbases to defend against any Allied push toward Rabaul through the Solomons. The U.S., on the other hand, by consistently misreading Japanese intent regarding Operation KE and pursuing a cautious offensive strategy, blunted the tactical impact of their initiatives to counter the evacuation. Several imprudent tactical decisions and a misallocation of resources further diluted the strength of US efforts."

Book CACTUS Air Power At Guadalcanal

Download or read book CACTUS Air Power At Guadalcanal written by Major Timothy L. Clubb and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the role of the CACTUS Air Force during the battle for Guadalcanal. Hurriedly planned and executed, Guadalcanal was the first U.S. ground offensive in the Pacific. Starting as an unopposed amphibious assault, the operation turned into a six-month-long air, land, and sea battle to secure the island. Operating from an expeditionary airfield, the U.S. Marine Corps employed air power as its primary means of defending the island. The CACTUS Air Force conducted the campaign with limited air assets and was plagued by a variety of critical shortages, yet it managed to play a key role in the U.S. victory. This study focuses on the specific contributions of airpower during this campaign. It examines the role of air power in reconnaissance, deep, close, and rear area air operations. It also examines the factors that influenced how air assets were employed and the changes in U.S. concepts about air operations that were made to conduct the air campaign. CACTUS planes assisted in defeating several major Japanese attacks. However, the daily presence and routine operations of the CACTUS Air Force were its key contributions. CACTUS Air’s most important contribution was its ability to deny the Japanese air superiority and disrupt their freedom of action in the lower Solomon Islands.

Book excerpt: The "spine" of the Andes Mountain, which runs through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, is the source of almost all of the world's cocaine-based products, both legal and otherwise. In 1986, in the midst of the American "cocaine epidemic," the Reagan administration decided that the drug problem needed to be attacked at its source. The result was an eight-year clandestine drug war known as Operation Snowcap. From 1987 through 1994, groups of twelve to fifteen DEA agents were dispatched to South American countries on ninety-day temporary duty tours. These DEA agents met with counterparts from their host nation and together rained destruction down on the infrastructure and transportation networks that supported the illegal cocaine trade. Author Bob Hartman was deployed ten times during the course of Operation Snowcap. Inside DEA is his gripping, firsthand account of America's secretive drug war. In this true story, Hartman chronicles both his triumphs and tragedies and recounts his frustration with his superiors and the biased media portrayals of the operation. Prepare to be transported to the jungles of South America for an inside look at an often misunderstood chapter of history.

Book Memorable War Stories

Download or read book Memorable War Stories written by Ranbir Singh Gp Capt and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memorable War Stories is a collection of 27 war stories and incidents placing on record the exciting exploits of our own fliers of the Indian Air Force and the intrepid fighters of the Army and Navy operating in our own environment. All the stories/incidents recorded in the book are true and factually correct, and are based on research, first person accounts, and published stories carried by different newspapers and magazines over a period of time. Although most of the names of the crews have been clipped down to their squadron nicknames, nevertheless they will be quite identifiable to their colleagues and contemporaries. The book has been fictionalised to an extent to make it readable and bring in the human angle, but there is no compromise on the factual details. The war stories and the other incidents cover a wide spectrum beginning with the Kashmir operations and race the reader through the 1962 Sino-Indian Frontier War, the Twenty Two Fateful Days of the 1965 Indo-Pak Conflict, the Fourteen Days 1971 war, and not forgetting the Kargil Operation Vijay. The book has been written in an easy and fluid style which makes it immensely readable, and the simple language though with a defence flavour should find favour with the men-in-uniform as well as civilians. It is a welcome addition to the books on defence themes.
