Book Quarrying Opencast and Alluvial Mining

Download or read book Quarrying Opencast and Alluvial Mining written by John Sinclair and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quarrying and all other branches of surface mining rather than diminishing in importance have become of more and more consequence economically, industrially and particularly with the depletion of high-grade deep-mined mineral reserves. Low-grade minerals require low cost extraction and this in many cases necessitates very expensive mechanized equipment with the cost of individual units running into millions of pounds in the case of large scale operations with high productivity. There has been, and there still is, a tendency for the smaller single quarries to be amalgamated into groups with large financial resources and therefore with the ability to purchase these expensive machines so necessary to make operations viable. This in turn requires wider administrative and technical knowledge in executives of these groups and as these often handle a wide range of products from widely differing systems of working, this technical knowledge should embrace the exploitation of many different types of deposits. There is, at present, a great dearth throughout the world of such qualified executives as is apparent from advertisements of vacancies in the technical press. It would appear that these industries offer an attractive career to the widely qualified and experienced technologist in these fields. This book deals with methods of working in the surface extractive indus tries, quarry management and power supply-but does not deal with related ancillary processes except where these affect quarrying operations.

Book Mining and its Impact on the Environment

Download or read book Mining and its Impact on the Environment written by Fred G. Bell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2007 E.B. Burwell, Jr. Award of the Geological Society of America Mining activity has left a legacy of hazards to the environment, such as waste, unstable ground and contamination, which can be problematic when redeveloping land. This book highlights the effects of past mining and provides information on the types of problems it may cause in both urban and rural areas. By way of example, the book also demonstrates how such problems may be anticipated, investigated, predicted, prevented and controlled. Furthermore, it shows how sites already affected by mining problems and hazards can be remediated and rehabilitated. Covering subsidence, surface mining, disposal of waste, problems resulting from mine closure and mineral processing, Mining and its Impact on the Environment is an excellent reference for practising mining and geotechnical engineers, as well as students in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a brief history and a general overview of the state of surface mining technology with topics ranging from the principles to surface mining methods, systems, and pit planning design. It starts with the definition of surface mine and ends with land reclamation and mine closure. The following chapters address the basics of mineral economics, calculation of stripping ratio; exploitation of difficult parts of ore deposits, slope stability, controlling falls and slides in the surface mines, sorts of freight traffic, scrapers, bulldozers, and loaders. The book serves as a reference text for mining students, engineers, and geologists.

Book Beach Nourishment Techniques Report 1

Download or read book Beach Nourishment Techniques Report 1 written by Thomas W. Richardson and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the first two phases of a research project aimed at developing new dredging systems for beach nourishment from offshore sources. As an introduction to the subject matter, the current situation in the United States regarding beach nourishment and offshore dredging equipment is outlined. Example nourishment projects accomplished and the range of equipment used to date. Next, the engineering considerations involved in selecting an optimum nourishment system for a particular project or project category are presented, and their effects on system characteristics are discussed. The main body of the report presents the results of an investigation into equipment suitable for offshore nourishment work. Approximately 50 examples are described illustrating dredge types, pipelines, connections, and miscellaneous pieces of equipment. The examples are divided into the main categories 'existing' and 'proposed' and subdivided according to design concept. The final portion of the report consists of the selection of certain equipment subcategories for further consideration and the construction of possible offshore nourishment systems using this selected equipment. A logic network is presented outlining these possible systems, and their projected uses are discussed. Future phases of the research project are outlined. The report includes approximately 45 illustrations and 85 references directly related to offshore dredging and beach nourishment. (Author).

Book Supergene and Surficial Ore Deposits

Download or read book Supergene and Surficial Ore Deposits written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supergene and Surficial Ore Deposits; Textures and Fabrics is a collection of papers that deals with economic geological deposits, particularly as endogenic type, or as an integral part of their geological environment. One paper explores the possibility that the evolution of ores of sedimentary affiliation or of sedimentary rocks and their chemistry during geologic history can be a product of the evolution of the outer spheres of the earth combined with a cycling phenomena that proceeds in a spiral way. Another paper discusses the role of climate on a large range of depositional environments through mobilization, both by chemical and physical events, of metal-ions. Mobilization can also occur by controlled deposition and enrichment of the "mobilized" ions in a certain sedimentary environment. Various depositions occur in different climates, for example, bauxites, requiring higher precipitation levels, form in humid zones. One paper points that ore-mineral accumulations controlled by descending supergene solutions play a significant role in ore-mineral depositions. The collection is beneficial to geologists, industrial chemists, researchers, technical designers, and engineers whose works are related with ore deposits and mining.
