Book excerpt: The present work deals with propagation of acoustic waves in periodic media. Thesemedia have particularly interesting properties since the spectrum associated with theunderlying wave operator in such media has a band-gap structure: there exist intervals offrequences for which monochromatic waves do not propagate. Moreover, by introducinglinear defects in this kind of media, one can create guided modes inside the bands offorbidden frequences. In this work we show that it is possible to create such guidedmodes in the case of particular periodic media of grid type: more precisely, the periodicdomain in question is R2 minus an infinite set of rectangular obstacles periodically spacedin two orthogonal directions (the distance between two neighbour obstacles being "),which is locally perturbed by diminishing the distance between two columns of obstacles. The results are extended to the 3D case. This work has a theoretical and a numerical aspect. From the theoretical point of view theanalysis is based on the fact that, " being small, the spectrum of the operator associatedwith our problem is "close" to the spectrum of a problem posed on a graph which is ageometric limit of the domain as " tends to 0. However, for the limit graph the spectrumcan be computed explicitly. Then, we study the spectrum of the non-limit operatorusing asymptotic analysis. Theoretical results are illustrated by numerical computationsobtained with a numerical method developed for study of periodic media: this method isbased on the reduction of the initial (linear) eigenvalue problem posed in an unboundeddomain to a non-linear problem posed in a bounded domain (using the exact Dirichletto-Neumann operator).

Book Modeling and Analysis of Transient Processes in Open Resonant Structures

Download or read book Modeling and Analysis of Transient Processes in Open Resonant Structures written by Yuriy K. Sirenko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-04-03 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a systematic approach to scattering of transient fields which can be introduced in undergraduate or graduate courses. The initial boundary value problems considered describe the transient electromagnetic fields formed by open periodic, compact, and waveguide resonators. The methods developed and the mathematical and physical results obtained provide a basis on which a modern theory for the scattering of resonant non-harmonic waves can be developed.

Book Beam Wave Interaction in Periodic and Quasi Periodic Structures

Download or read book Beam Wave Interaction in Periodic and Quasi Periodic Structures written by Levi Schächter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past seven years I have been involved in the investigation of high power microwave sources for accelerator and radar applications. As for many others before me, the starting point of this book was a collection of notes on theoretical topics out of the material I had been working on. The notes were the core of a course for graduate students at Cornell University. When I started to prepare these notes it seemed a fairly straight-forward and not very time-consuming task since I had most of the material well organized. Today, three years after the preparation of the first notes, I can only wonder how naive this thought was. Most of my work was oriented towards analytic and quasi-analytic tech niques for the investigation of the interaction of an electron beam with elec tromagnetic waves. These topics are presented in Chaps. 4 and 6. However, for a systematic elaboration of these topics it was necessary to provide some general background, therefore parts of what are today Chaps. 2, 3, and 5 were prepared. Related topics of acceleration concepts were also prepared to some extent but I ran out of time and the material (Chap. 8) was not delivered. In the meantime, various sections of this book were taught at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Ben-Gurion University. In the last version I included a discussion on free electron lasers (Chap. 7).

Book Quantum Waveguides

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pavel Exner
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2015-05-31
  • ISBN : 3319185764
  • Pages : 398 pages

Download or read book Quantum Waveguides written by Pavel Exner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-31 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explains the theory of quantum waveguides, that is, dynamics of quantum particles confined to regions in the form of tubes, layers, networks, etc. The focus is on relations between the confinement geometry on the one hand and the spectral and scattering properties of the corresponding quantum Hamiltonians on the other. Perturbations of such operators, in particular, by external fields are also considered. The volume provides a unique summary of twenty-five years of research activity in this area and indicates ways in which the theory can develop further. The book is fairly self-contained. While it requires some broader mathematical physics background, all the basic concepts are properly explained and proofs of most theorems are given in detail, so there is no need for additional sources. Without a parallel in the literature, the monograph by Exner and Kovarik guides the reader through this new and exciting field.

Book Bibliography of Microwave Optical Technology

Download or read book Bibliography of Microwave Optical Technology written by A. F. Harvey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although microwaves and coherent optics, being two of the largest and most useful branches of electrical engineering to emerge technologically, are usually considered as distinct subjects, many of the underlying fundamental principles, scientific achievements, and practical applications have common features. Following the evolvment of the initial principles and techniques during the closing decade of the last century, microwave engineering has long matured to a stage of ready availability of components, automation and accuracy of measurement, economical manufacturing methods, and application of sophisticated systems. Further, this development of electromagnetic phenomena having spatial and temporal coherence has, based on several centuries of study and practice of noncoherent light, in the last two decades reached the optical region. Hence, it is now practicable to consider a comprehensive treatment of these two fields, division being made by subject matter rather than by the artificial distinctions of frequency and/or wavelength ranges. However, a full text on the combined subjects would be very large and unwieldy and, thus, this Bibliography is presented in the hope that it will prove useful as a compact reference source to a large body of workers and, by putting forward the latest scientific and technical advances, stimulate a multi-disciplinary approach. The material of the book commences with the fundamentals of radiation and matter, progressing through components and devices, amplification and generation, transmission, reception and processing of information, and methods of measurement to conclude with a wide range of applications.

Book Modern Theory of Gratings

Download or read book Modern Theory of Gratings written by Yuriy K. Sirenko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advances in the theory of diffraction gratings and the applications of these results certainly determine the progress in several areas of applied science and engineering. The polarization converters, phase shifters and filters, quantum and solid-state oscillators, open quasi optical dispersive resonators and power compressors, slow-wave structures and patter forming systems, accelerators and spectrometer; that is still far from being a complete list of devices exploiting the amazing ability of periodic structures to perform controlled frequency, spatial, and polarization selection of signals. Diffraction gratings used to be and still are one of the most popular objects of analysis in electromagnetic theory. The further development of the theory of diffraction gratings, in spite of considerable achievements, is still very important presently. The requirements of applied optics and microwave engineering present the theory of diffraction gratings with many new problems which force us to search for new methods and tools for their resolution. Just in such way there appeared recently new fields, connected with the analysis, synthesis and definition of equivalent parameters of artificial materials – layers and coatings, having periodic structure and possessing features, which can be found in natural materials only in extraordinary or exceptional situations. In this book the authors present results of the electromagnetic theory of diffraction gratings that may constitute the base of further development of this theory which can meet the challenges provided by the most recent requirements of fundamental and applied science. The following issues will be considered in the book Authentic methods of analytical regularization, that perfectly match the requirements of analysis of resonant scattering of electromagnetic waves by gratings; Spectral theory of gratings, providing a reliable foundation for the analysis of spatial – frequency transformations of electromagnetic fields occurring in open periodic resonators and waveguides; Parametric Fourier method and C-method, that are oriented towards the efficient numerical analysis of transformation properties of fields in the case of arbitrary profile periodic boundary between dielectric media and multilayered conformal arrays; Rigorous methods for analysis of transient processes and time-spatial transformations of electromagnetic waves in resonant situations, based on development and incorporation in standard numerical routines of FDTD of so called explicit absorbing boundary conditions; New approaches to the solution of homogenization problems – the key problem arising in construction of metamaterials and meta surfaces; New physical results about the resonance scattering of pulse and monochromatic waves by periodic structures, including structures with chiral or left-handed materials; Methods and the results of the solutions of several actual applied problems of analysis and synthesis of pattern creating gratings, power compressors, resonance radiators of high capacity short radio pulses, open electromagnetic structures for the systems of resonant quasi optics and absorbing coatings.

Book Surface and Anomolous Waves on Phased Arrays of TEM Waveguides with Fences

Download or read book Surface and Anomolous Waves on Phased Arrays of TEM Waveguides with Fences written by Robert J. Mailloux and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes the behavior of an infinite array of parallel plane waveguides in a conducting ground plane with metallic fences perpendicular to the ground plane and spaced halfway between each pair of radiators. The study is mainly concerned with anomolous wave nulls and their relation to endfire surface-wave radiation, and, in addition, some data is presented to demonstrate the scan-matching properties of the fence geometry. An interesting new development in open periodic structure theory is reported and is shown to apply to both surface waves and anomolous waves. Certain restrictions on the phase distributions of the aperture fields and fence currents are revealed and studied in detail. In addition to these basic relationships, a numerical study of the scanning properties of waveguide-fence arrays is presented which has indicated that structures of this type can reduce impedance variation during scan and can be especially useful when it is desirable to scan very near to, or even slightly beyond, the point at which a grating lobe moves into real space.
