Book Marxism and Deconstruction

Download or read book Marxism and Deconstruction written by Michael Ryan and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982. Aside from Jacques Derrida's own references to the "possible articulation" between deconstruction and Marxism, the relationship between the two has remained largely unexplored. In Marxism and Deconstruction, Michael Ryan examines that multifaceted relationship but not through a mere comparison of two distinct and inviolable entities. Instead, he looks at both with an eye to identifying their common elements and reweaving them into a new theory of political practice. To accomplish his task, Ryan undertakes a detailed comparison of deconstruction and Marxism, relating deconstruction to the dialectical tradition in philosophy and demonstrating how deconstruction can be used in the critique of ideology. He is a forceful critic of both the politics of deconstruction and the metaphysical aspect of Marxism (as seen from a deconstructionist perspective). Besides offering the first book-length study of Derrida in this context, Ryan makes the first methodic attempt by an American scholar to apply deconstruction to domains beyond literature. He proposes a deconstructive Marxism, one lacking the metaphysical underpinnings of conservative "scientific" Marxist theory and employing deconstructive analysis both for Marxist political criticism and to further current anti-metaphysical developments within Marxism. Marxism and Deconstruction is an innovative and controversial contribution to the fields of literary criticism, philosophy, and political science.

Book Revolution and Disenchantment

Download or read book Revolution and Disenchantment written by Fadi A. Bardawil and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-10 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab Revolutions that began in 2011 reignited interest in the question of theory and practice, imbuing it with a burning political urgency. In Revolution and Disenchantment Fadi A. Bardawil redescribes for our present how an earlier generation of revolutionaries, the 1960s Arab New Left, addressed this question. Bardawil excavates the long-lost archive of the Marxist organization Socialist Lebanon and its main theorist, Waddah Charara, who articulated answers in their political practice to fundamental issues confronting revolutionaries worldwide: intellectuals as vectors of revolutionary theory; political organizations as mediators of theory and praxis; and nonemancipatory attachments as impediments to revolutionary practice. Drawing on historical and ethnographic methods and moving beyond familiar reception narratives of Marxist thought in the postcolony, Bardawil engages in "fieldwork in theory" that analyzes how theory seduces intellectuals, cultivates sensibilities, and authorizes political practice. Throughout, Bardawil underscores the resonances and tensions between Arab intellectual traditions and Western critical theory and postcolonial theory, deftly placing intellectuals from those traditions into a much-needed conversation.

Book excerpt: Why should we pay attention to the great social critics like Marx? Americans, especially now, confront serious questions and evidences that our capitalist system is in trouble. It clearly serves the 1% far, far better than what it is doing to the vast mass of the people. Marx was a social critic for whom capitalism was not the end of human history. It was just the latest phase and badly needed the transition to something better. We offer this essay now because of the power and usefulness today of Marx's criticism of the capitalist economic system. eBook: https: //bit.ly/2K6iI8

Download or read book Open Marxism written by Christos Memos and published by Critical Theory and the Critiq. This book was released on 2025-01-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Open Marxism? Against a background of social regression and the ongoing, multifaceted crisis of capitalism, this book examines the Open Marxist tradition and how it develops the work of the early Frankfurt School in ways which significantly advance critical social theory as negative critique of capitalist society. The study situates Open Marxism as the latest critique of mechanistic interpretations of Marx and Marxism, evolutionism and positivism, and ''naturalized'' historical and societal processes. It charts the development of the different strands of Open Marxism: from Axelos in the 1950s, and Agnoli in the 1980s, to the work of Clarke, Bonefeld, Gunn and Holloway since the 1990s. The book describes the distinctive features of Open Marxist thought with a focus on its use and understanding of critique as negative and destructive. Negative critical theory is argued to be the only path still open to the possibility of human emancipation, and this volume describes how Open Marxism can be put to use in the work of building radical social praxis, with reference made in particular to the critique of class, political economy and the capitalist state. Explaining how Open Marxism's subversive negation of capitalist social relations and radical critique of capitalism's various perverted social forms this book is a vital contribution to a body of Marxist thought concerned with the contemporary struggle for human emancipation.

Book The Open Society in Theory and Practice

Download or read book The Open Society in Theory and Practice written by D. Germino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From June 28 until July 4, 1972, a group of scholars, all of them acade micians committed to the critical study of man and society which may be called political theory, met at The Rockefeller Foundation's VillaSerbelloni in Bellagio, Italy, to present papers on and discuss the subject of "The Open Society. " These papers, as revised, are published here, most of them for the first time. They reflect no consensus of view, nor were they intended to do so. That such a consensus did not emerge from the conference is not in our judgment a cause for regret; it may rather be regarded as a manifestation of a healthy and desirable plurality of approaches which itself indirectly tells us something important about the nature of the open society. All the papers deal in different contexts and from a variety of philosophi cal and theoretical perspectives with the interrelated themes of openness and the open society. Some of the panelists are skeptical of the capacity of modern industrial, or "post-industrial," society, with its heavy emphasis upon technological rationality to foster authentic openness under currently prevailing assumptions about man and nature.
