Book excerpt: "What does the landscape architect actually do as a designer?" The authors of this book investigate this question, which only seems easy – and address some fundamental ideas about design in landscape architecture: What resources are available for designing open spaces? What role do natural conditions play? What principles are applied? This book identifies and analyses the elements that come together to create landscape architecture. Based on their experience in practice and education, the authors reveal the core components of landscape design. In the introduction to the new edition, Stefan Bernard opens up about the book’s origins and reflects on its continuing importance for the design of high-quality outdoor spaces.

Book excerpt: “What does the landscape architect actually do as a design?” The authors investigate this seemingly simple question. What resources are available for designing open spaces? What part is played by conditions deriving from nature? How are locations and spaces created in the open air, how are paths routed and boundaries set, how are hard and soft materials used? Drawing on practical and theoretical experience, this introduction, often used as a textbook, reveals the central components of design and the intellectual paths followed in the design process. “The book is not so much for reading but for doing. It plays with shapes, imagining how people feel in these shapes and seeing how shapes create a different experience of landscape. Vegetation can make the relief of a hill clearer, less clear, indistinct or hidden. The authors show this by sketches illustrating the text ... As an example of the way Loidl and Bernard set their readers thinking for themselves, I quote what they regard as good design: ‘The paradox of a good design solution: more uniformity needs more variety.’Food for thought. Or read Open(ing) Spaces.” (Martin Woestenburg in 'scape, 2006)

Book Opening up spaces for meaningful engagement in educational praxis

Download or read book Opening up spaces for meaningful engagement in educational praxis written by Nicolina Montesano Montessori and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to open up spaces to make education more meaningful? The concept of space can involve educational interactions, relationships, contents and other relevant aspects relating to this purpose. The book presents three perspectives to engage in opening up spaces. It empowers pupils, students, and teachers to develop as unique individuals, better relate to the communities and cultural traditions to which they belon, and to develop new visions, understandings, and ways of living. This volume is the result of the search of a number of educational professionals on how to open up spaces to make education more meaningful. The opened spaces involve educational interactions, relationships, contents and other relevant aspects relating to this purpose. The book presents three salient perspectives to engage in this envisioned path. It empowers pupils, students, and teachers to: Develop as unique individuals. This process includes engaging with personal feelings, developing a personal way of thinking and judging, and articulating one’s own voice in relation to others and the specific social context. Relate to the communities and cultural traditions to which they (want to) belong, and to interact with others who may belong to different cultural traditions. Develop new visions, understandings, and ways of living in order to lead a sustainable life within the potential of our eco-system, together with the myriads of other life forms on planet earth. These interconnected perspectives are elaborated in the domains of Bildung, worldview education, mathematics, physical sciences and language. The volume provides an inviting new perspective, which holds that students and teachers are already entangled in worldly tensions and issues, from the very start of their entering into education. Given this fact, it is a joint educational challenge to question and make sense of the complexities of today’s world. As such, the spaces that are elaborated in this publication are identified as spaces for praxis, by envisioning education as a means to actively improve ourselves and our contexts. The authors of this research compilation belong to the (network of the) combined research group Normative Professionalism / Life Orientation of the Utrecht University and the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. They are all professionals who combine intensive involvement in educational practice with practice-oriented research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. Opening Space Research: Dreams, Technology, and Scientific Discovery is George Ludwig's account of the early development of space-based electromagnetic physics, with a focus on the first U.S. space launches and the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts. Narrated by the person who developed many of the instruments for the early Explorer spacecraft during the 1950s and participated directly in the scientific research, it draws heavily upon the author's voluminous collection of laboratory notes and other papers, upon the Van Allen archive, and upon a wide array of other sources. This book presents very detailed discussions of historic events in a highly readable (semitechnical), first-person form. More than that, though, Opening Space Research brings to the forefront the entire team of scientists who made these accomplishments possible, providing an extensive index of names to enhance and complete the historical record. Authoritative and unique, this book will be of interest to space scientists, science historians, and anyone interested in space history and the first U.S. space launches.

Book Ambient Television

Download or read book Ambient Television written by Anna McCarthy and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2001-03-16 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although we tend to think of television primarily as a household fixture, TV monitors outside the home are widespread: in bars, laundromats, and stores; conveying flight arrival and departure times in airports; uniting crowds at sports events and allaying boredom in waiting rooms; and helping to pass the time in workplaces of all kinds. In Ambient Television Anna McCarthy explores the significance of this pervasive phenomenon, tracing the forms of conflict, commerce, and community that television generates outside the home. Discussing the roles television has played in different institutions from 1945 to the present day, McCarthy draws on a wide array of sources. These include retail merchandising literature, TV industry trade journals, and journalistic discussions of public viewing, as well as the work of cultural geographers, architectural theorists, media scholars, and anthropologists. She also uses photography as a research tool, documenting the uses and meanings of television sets in the built environment, and focuses on such locations as the tavern and the department store to show how television is used to support very different ideas about gender, class, and consumption. Turning to contemporary examples, McCarthy discusses practices such as Turner Private Networks’ efforts to transform waiting room populations into advertising audiences and the use of point-of-sale video that influences brand visibility and consumer behavior. Finally, she inquires into the activist potential of out-of-home television through a discussion of the video practices of two contemporary artists in everyday public settings. Scholars and students of cultural, visual, urban, American, film, and television studies will be interested in this thought-provoking, interdisciplinary book.

Book excerpt: In Wild Empty Spaces, Vince Gowmon leads you through six stages of the soul, from its arrival on Earth, through its expression in childhood, relationships, its summons to reflect, slow and gradually return to the wild empty spaces where we hear its whispers calling us home. This courageous journey is not so much about dying and death on a physical level, but about bowing to Mystery, to something much larger than our individual self. More specifically, the poems are an emphatic invitation to become intimate with the subtle entreaties of Mother Nature, to walk with the wisdom of inquiry, feel deeply, dream boldly, and allow the force of our longings to break our hearts open. They are an invitation to brave the space between what we've always known, the spaces in which our immanent wildness finds us.

Book Approaches to Future Space Cooperation and Competition in a Globalizing World

Download or read book Approaches to Future Space Cooperation and Competition in a Globalizing World written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous countries and regions now have very active space programs, and the number is increasing. These maturing capabilities around the world create a plethora of potential partners for cooperative space endeavors, while at the same time heightening competitiveness in the international space arena. This book summarizes a public workshop held in November 2008 for the purpose of reviewing past and present cooperation, coordination, and competition mechanisms for space and Earth science research and space exploration; identifying significant lessons learned; and discussing how those lessons could best be applied in the future, particularly in the areas of cooperation and collaboration. Presentations and initial discussion focused on past and present experiences in international cooperation and competition to identify "lessons learned." Those lessons learned were then used as the starting point for subsequent discussions on the most effective ways for structuring future cooperation or coordination in space and Earth science research and space exploration. The goal of the workshop was not to develop a specific model for future cooperation or coordination, but rather to explore the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches and stimulate further deliberation on this important topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of training activities in detail, over 60 handouts with the content of how to defend human rights against violence, an integrated 23-day curriculum, many tips for trainers, and mini-essays on pedagogical theory -- all of this is included in this book available from Training for Change (TFC). Field-tested in Southeast Asia and extensively revised, the curriculum draws from the experience of dozens of non-governmental organizations which have confronted terror and repression in the field while trying to do their work. Some of these groups go into the field with the mission of nonviolently opening space for democracy, groups like Peace Brigades International, Guatemalan Accompaniment Project, Christian Peace Teams. Other groups focus on humanitarian missions, like Doctors Without Borders or the International Committee for the Red Cross, and yet their workers find themselves in harm's way in the turbulent world of civil conflict. In addition, the authors consulted with military peacekeepers and academic specialists in conflict resolution.

Book Wide Open Spaces

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Wide Open Spaces written by Carol Henderson and published by Circle Books. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does God call us? The answers are as different as we are. Sometimes God summons us through the Church and sometimes in spite of the Church. In the depths of loss and confusion God speaks to us, beckoning us to follow an unexplored path. While we are heading in one direction, God surprises us with an undeniable invitation to go another way. Wide Open Spaces includes essays by women who have experienced and responded to God's call in all of these ways. The ministers and Christian educators whose stories fill this book testify to God's grace in the midst of their lives as single people in family-centered contexts, as women whose callings also include parenthood and marriage, and as those who the Church refuses to fully accept. Discrimination, harassment and homophobia pierce the narratives in this book. Yet this is not a book about defeat.
