Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today it is almost impossible to remember what life was like with no computer, no mobile phone, and no Internet for accessing information, performing tra- actions or exchanging emails and data. New technology is bringing wave after wave of new bene?ts to daily life: organisations are doing business with each other via the Internet; people are ?lling in tax declarations online and booking their next vacation through the Internet. In general we are all progressively - ing (and dependent on) software and services running on computers, connecting mobile phones and other devices, and exchanging information on the Internet. People like to shop around and exercise choice. So do businesses and public administrations. Today they can buy a complete software package that best suits their needs, even though they may never use some of the tools it o?ers, or other desirable tools are not available. In the future they may no longer have to compromise on choice. Alternative approaches like “Software as a Service” and “Computing Resources as a Service” are emerging. Software is provided on-line as a service when and where it is needed, and the same for computing resources needed to run software. Such an approach allows individuals and organisations totapintoande?ectivelyharnesstheimmensewealthofinformation, knowledge and analytical resources when they need them, paying only for what they use. Book Producing Open Source Software

Download or read book Producing Open Source Software written by Karl Fogel and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 2005-10-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corporate market is now embracing free, "open source" software like never before, as evidenced by the recent success of the technologies underlying LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP). Each is the result of a publicly collaborative process among numerous developers who volunteer their time and energy to create better software. The truth is, however, that the overwhelming majority of free software projects fail. To help you beat the odds, O'Reilly has put together Producing Open Source Software, a guide that recommends tried and true steps to help free software developers work together toward a common goal. Not just for developers who are considering starting their own free software project, this book will also help those who want to participate in the process at any level. The book tackles this very complex topic by distilling it down into easily understandable parts. Starting with the basics of project management, it details specific tools used in free software projects, including version control, IRC, bug tracking, and Wikis. Author Karl Fogel, known for his work on CVS and Subversion, offers practical advice on how to set up and use a range of tools in combination with open mailing lists and archives. He also provides several chapters on the essentials of recruiting and motivating developers, as well as how to gain much-needed publicity for your project. While managing a team of enthusiastic developers -- most of whom you've never even met -- can be challenging, it can also be fun. Producing Open Source Software takes this into account, too, as it speaks of the sheer pleasure to be had from working with a motivated team of free software developers.

Book The Economy of Collaboration

Download or read book The Economy of Collaboration written by Francesco Ramella and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the world economy has undergone radical transformations, in part connected to the expansion of the ‘digital economy’, in part to the growing interconnection via the internet of the world of objects and physical processes. This ‘great transformation’ poses the dilemma on the capitalism’s ability to reconcile economic and social value, keeping together economic well-being, social cohesion and political freedom. The Economy of Collaboration can offer a contribution in this direction but requires courageous policies to mediate the various interests at stake, as well as to rethink and make more sustainable its development, by increasing the benefits not only for businesses but also for workers and consumers. In short, to create shared value. This book refers to a mode of organizing the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services based on cooperative relations. The main reference is to activities linked to the digital economy, since they are the emerging forms of a definitely older phenomenon, but which is expanding on an ever-wider scale thanks to new technologies. These collaborative activities can be regulated differently, along a continuum that ranges from the pole of market exchanges to that of generalized reciprocity, with various intermediate mixed forms.

Book excerpt: Information technology is becoming ingrained in our everyday life. The consequence of this is that the line between humans and technology is more and more blurred, and tends to transform the human being into a cyber-organism. This transformation, accompanied by the emergence of Industry 4.0, brings us to define a new term: Human 4.0. This new generation of individuals has to deal with smart interconnected pervasive environments supported by the internet of things. Nevertheless, this merge between humans and technology is not straight-forward and requires an additional effort to reduce the gap between the human being and the machine. Such research implies a multidisciplinary approach to the interaction between biological organisms and artificial artefacts. This book intends to provide the reader with an insight into the new relationship with the technology brought about by Industry 4.0, and how it can make the human-machine interaction more efficient.

Book Software Reuse Methods Techniques and Tools

Download or read book Software Reuse Methods Techniques and Tools written by Cristina Gacek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the open-source movement there is now a great deal of reusable software available in the public domain. This offers significant functionality that commercial software vendors can use in their software projects. Open-source approaches to software development have illustrated that complex, mission critical software can be developed by distributed teams of developers sharing a common goal. Commercial software vendors have an opportunity to both learn from the op- source community as well as leverage that knowledge for the benefit of its commercial clients. Nonetheless, the open-source movement is a diverse collection of ideas, knowledge, techniques, and solutions. As a result, it is far from clear how these approaches should be applied to commercial software engineering. This paper has looked at many of the dimensions of the open-source movement, and provided an analysis of the different opportunities available to commercial software vendors. References and Notes 1. It can be argued that the open-source community has produced really only two essential 9 products -- Apache (undeniably the most popular web server) and Linux although both are essentially reincarnations of prior systems. Both are also somewhat products of their times: Apache filled a hole in the then emerging Web, at a time no platform vendor really knew how to step in, and Linux filled a hole in the fragmented Unix market, colored by the community s general anger against Microsoft. 2.Evans Marketing Services, Linux Developers Survey, Volume 1, March 2000.
