Download or read book Dark Finance written by Fabio Mattioli and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark Finance offers one of the first ethnographic accounts of financial expansion and its political impacts in Eastern Europe. Following workers, managers, and investors in the Macedonian construction sector, Fabio Mattioli shows how financialization can empower authoritarian regimes—not by making money accessible to everyone, but by allowing a small group of oligarchs to monopolize access to international credit and promote a cascade of exploitative domestic debt relations. The landscape of failed deals and unrealizable dreams that is captured in this book portrays finance not as a singular, technical process. Instead, Mattioli argues that finance is a set of political and economic relations that entangles citizens, Eurocrats, and workers in tense paradoxes. Mattioli traces the origins of illiquidity in the reorganization of the European project and the postsocialist perversion of socialist financial practices—a dangerous mix that hid the Macedonian regime's weakness behind a façade of urban renewal and, for a decade, made it seem omnipresent and invincible. Dark Finance chronicles how, one bad deal at a time, Macedonia's authoritarian regime rode a wave of financial expansion that deepened its reach into Macedonian society, only to discover that its domination, like all speculative bubbles, was teetering on the verge of collapse.

Book Young People and the Belt and Road Opportunities and Challenges in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Young People and the Belt and Road Opportunities and Challenges in Central and Eastern Europe written by and published by 三聯書店(香港)有限公司,聯合電子出版有限公司(代理). This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young People and the Belt and Road is a joint effort by over 40 young people across 20 countries to tell their stories about the future of Central and Eastern Europe, China, and the Belt and Road Initiative. In 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative, which envisions a world with better development, better connectivity, and better cooperation was launched in Kazakhstan,. As a global, multi-generational vision, the Belt and Road Initiative will primarily benefit the young people of the world today. To ensure the success of the Initiative, their voices need to be heard. This is particularly urgent as little systematic work has been done to encourage the participation of young people. This publication places the focus on young people and asks them the question: what should the Belt and Road Initiative look like for you? In this book, young authors from 16 Central and Eastern European nations share insights about their countries. For the Belt and Road Initiative, Central and Eastern Europe plays a critical role in linking together Western Europe, Northern Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia. Each chapter focuses on a single country in the region. Based on the complex historical background and present realities of their respective countries, the authors present their cases of the potential obstacles and opportunities related to the Initiative and provide their suggestions for change.

Book Border porosities

  • Author : Rozita Dimova
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2021-09-21
  • ISBN : 1526140659
  • Pages : 133 pages

Download or read book Border porosities written by Rozita Dimova and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book documents border porosities that have developed and persisted between Greece and North Macedonia over different temporalities and at different localities. By drawing on geology’s approaches to studying porosity, Dimova argues that similar to rocks and minerals that only appear solid and impermeable, seemingly impenetrable borders are inevitably traversed by different forms of passage. The rich ethnographic case studies, from the history of railroads in the southern Balkans, border town beauty tourism, child refugees during the Greek Civil War, mining and environmental activism, and the urban renovation project in Skopje, show that the political borders between states do not only restrict or regulate the movement of people and things, but are also always permeable in ways that exceed state governmentality.

Book Dismembering the State

  • Author : P. H. Liotta
  • Publisher : Lexington Books

Download or read book Dismembering the State written by P. H. Liotta and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: P. H. Liotta's previous book, The Wreckage Reconsidered, was acclaimed as a tour de force of scholarship. In Dismembering the State, Liotta continues to challenge numerous assumptions about the disintegration of Yugoslavia. His research uses an "ecological," or holistic, perspective to address interwoven questions such as the role of military intervention as coercive diplomacy, the use of chaos as a strategy against America's and NATO's technological military predominance, and the influence of post-Cold War European democratic and economic reforms. This book considers how a host of factors, from 1991 to 1999, combined to contribute significantly to both the disintegration of the nation-state and to the continued instability of the present states of the former Yugoslavia. Of interest to both scholars and sophisticated lay readers, Liotta has fashioned a scholarly assessment of this timely and complex topic that promises to be as innovative as it is erudite.
