This book was released on 1987 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jews of North America, based on the latest research by fifteen historians and scholars from Canada, Israel, and the United States, is the first book to focus on the ethnic totality of the American and Canadian Jewish experience. The book blends a rich array of interrelated themes into a composite whole that is central to an understanding of North American Jewish history. The emphasis on continuity of tradition in these essays counters the prevailing myth of discontinuity, which promotes the notion of the great sense of separation Jews felt from "the world we have lost." The volume also provides an interesting comparative dimension by examining the similarities and dissimilarities of the American Jewish immigrant experience in both Canada and the United States.

Book Women Pioneers of the Louisiana Environmental Movement

Download or read book Women Pioneers of the Louisiana Environmental Movement written by Peggy Frankland and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women Pioneers of the Louisiana Environmental Movement provides a window into the passion and significance of thirty-eight committed individuals who led a grassroots movement in a socially conservative state. The book is comprised of oral history narratives in which women activists share their motivation, struggles, accomplishments, and hard-won wisdom. Additionally, interviews with eight men, all leaders who worked with or against the women, provide more insight into this rich—and also gendered—history. The book sheds light on Louisiana and America's social and political history, as well as the national environmental movement in which women often emerged to speak for human rights, decent health care, and environmental protection. By illuminating a crucial period in Louisiana history, the women tell how “environmentalism” emerged within a state already struggling with the dual challenges of adjusting to the civil rights movement and the growing oil boom. Peggy Frankland, an environmental activist herself since 1982, worked with a team of interviewers, especially those trained at Louisiana State University's T. Harry Williams Center for Oral History. Together they interviewed forty women pioneers of the state environmental movement. Frankland's work also was aided by a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. In this compilation, she allows the women's voices to provide a clear picture of how their smallest actions impacted their communities, their families, and their way of life. Some experiences were frightening, some were demeaning, and many women were deeply affected by the individual persecution, ridicule, and scorn their activities brought. But their shared victories reveal the positive influence their activism had on the lives of loved ones and fellow citizens.

Book The Louisiana Populist Movement 1881 1900

Download or read book The Louisiana Populist Movement 1881 1900 written by Donna A. Barnes and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Populist movement of the late nineteenth century represents one of the largest third-party challenges in American history. Throughout the South widespread drops in crop prices led to agrarian revolt, which contributed to the movement's popularity. Yet, in the largely rural state of Louisiana, despite the political group's focus on empowering distressed farmers, this challenge proved far less successful. In Donna A. Barnes's The Louisiana Populist Movement the question of ineffectuality makes an intriguing political case study of the Pelican State and Populism. Emerging in the 1890s as the political wing of the Southern Farmers' Alliance, the Populists, or People's Party, garnered the support of millions of rural southerners. But the affiliated Louisiana party struggled to spread beyond a limited number of parishes in the northern and central part of the state. According to Barnes, the movement's relatively poor mobilization record provides an excellent opportunity to explore factors that impede social growth. Most scholars, she contends, often focus on the emergence and rise of successful political organizations and overlook the valuable observations to be found within less successful movements, such as Louisiana Populism. In her evaluation, Barnes points to racial division as the factor that undermined the Populist cause in Louisiana. The Democratic Party saw the agenda of the Populist movement as a threat to white supremacy and thus, when paired with the 1898 state constitution that disfranchised poor rural whites and most blacks, predestined the People's Party to poor public reception. Based on an array of archival research, Barnes's study offers the definitive source for the history of the Louisiana Populist Movement as well as a multidimensional theoretical analysis of the factors behind the movement's failure.
