Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ontario as a Home for the British Tenant Farmer Who Desires to Become His Own Landlord It is bountifully supplied with water throughout its whole extent; there are patches Of swamp land in some districts, but they are usually of small dimensions, and though little fitted for the purposes of agriculture, are exceedingly valuable to a neighborhood on account of the durability of their timber, which is specially adapted for the making of shingles, posts, fence-rails, paving-blocks, etc., etc. But nowhere is there an arid district, or one in which an abundant water-supply cannot be readily pro cured, both for man and beast. Besides innumerable lakes, rivers, creeks and stre'amlets, springs abound in _many localities, and everywhere under the soil pure, wholesome water can be struck at distances varying from fourteen to forty feet, so that sinking a well, which is frequently a neces sity for an isolated household, is very seldom attended with very much trouble or great expense. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emigration the British Farmer's and Farm Labourers Guide to Ontario, the Premier Province of the Dominion of Canada "Why should I Emigrate?" is the very natural question put by the British Agriculturist, when the subject of emigration is first mooted in his hearing. That question answered, and the proposition to emigrate once seriously entertained, the next question is, "To what Country or Colony shall I emigrate with, on the whole, most advantage?" We propose, in this pamphlet, to answer both questions with facts, plainly and truthfully stated, free from exaggeration or the slightest flavour of romance. We shall discuss the subject with the British farmer first, and the farm labourer alter wards, in just as practical a fashion as, at his own fireside, the one might talk over the advantages of shifting his tenancy, or the other his labour, from one county to another. As we proceed the map will help our explanations. The difficulties the British farmer has to contend with at home are sufficiently present to his own mind. No doubt they have been recently enhanced by the failure of crops and the ever-increasing competition the British agriculturist is subjected to, from the vast increase of production abroad, notably on the American continent. Book Poverty and Famines

Download or read book Poverty and Famines written by Amartya Sen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1983-01-20 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this book is on the causation of starvation in general and of famines in particular. The author develops the alternative method of analysis—the 'entitlement approach'—concentrating on ownership and exchange, not on food supply. The book also provides a general analysis of the characterization and measurement of poverty. Various approaches used in economics, sociology, and political theory are critically examined. The predominance of distributional issues, including distribution between different occupation groups, links up the problem of conceptualizing poverty with that of analyzing starvation.
