Book Grace Defined and Defended

Download or read book Grace Defined and Defended written by Kevin DeYoung and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians love to celebrate grace, but often talk about it in vague generalities. But such an important biblical concept ought to be clearly defined so it can be consistently defended. In this book, best-selling author Kevin DeYoung points modern readers back to an old document originally written to do just that. Warmly pastoral and broadly accessible, this book introduces readers to the Canons of Dort, a 17th-century work summarizing the central doctrines of the Christian faith. Widely regarded as a key pillar of the Reformed tradition, the Canons of Dort stand as a faithful witness to God's grace—offering a depth of understanding that the church still needs today. In three concise sections—covering history, theology, and practical application—DeYoung explores what led to the Canons and why they were needed, the five important doctrines that they explain, and Dort's place in the Reformed tradition today.

Book excerpt: Straightforward answers about Roman Catholicism for a Protestant audience The Roman Catholic faith is one of the world's most widespread religious traditions, yet the unique aspects of Roman Catholicism elicit perennial questions from adherents and outsiders alike. Such questions tend to fall into three major categories: historical backgrounds, theological matters, and personal relationships. Using Catholic Church documents and the writings of Catholic scholars, Baptist systematic theologian Gregg R. Allison distills the teachings of Catholicism around forty common questions about Catholic foundations, beliefs, and practices. The accessible question-and-answer format guides readers to the areas of interest, including: Where do Roman Catholic and Protestant beliefs differ? What happens during a Roman Catholic Mass? How does Roman Catholicism understand the biblical teaching about Mary? Who are the saints and what is their role? How can my Roman Catholic loved ones and I talk about the gospel? 40 Questions About Roman Catholicism explores theology and practice, doctrine and liturgy, sacraments and Mariology, contributions and scandals, and many other things, clarifying both real and perceived differences and similarities with other Christian traditions.

Book excerpt: The Bible tells us that all are sinners in need of a Savior. Sin, therefore, does not discriminate between different Christians and their religious denominations. The content of this book represents over thirty years of personal experience, research, observation, study, and prayer; in an effort to demonstrate through the Bible, and through history, that "The One True Church" is not an institutional church or a specific religious denomination, but rather all true believers who belong to the "Body of Christ." Today, many Catholics and non-Catholics alike, struggle to understand Catholic traditions, from a Biblical perspective. Over the centuries the Catholic Church has evolved into a complex religious organization of beliefs, rules, rituals, and requirements; described as "speculative and mystical theology," by a leading Catholic apologist, who says that most Catholics do not fully understand, and can't explain their faith to others. This book can be a useful resource for these and others, who have an interest in understanding what Catholics teach and what Protestants believe. - From the Prologue Joe Weller was born in 1945 into a working class family in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and spent his childhood in the South, in an era when Catholics were a minority, and there was an overt prejudice against blacks, Jews, and Catholics. Joe spent twelve years in the Catholic parochial school system, and later in life was a member of a number of parishes in Memphis, Miami, Dallas, and Los Angeles. Joe shares what he has learned over the last thirty years in his educational journey from the traditions and history of Catholicism, to the teachings of the Bible in; The One True Church: A Biblical Perspective on Catholic Tradition and History. Joe's desire is to encourage all those interested in this subject to take their own educational journey through the pages of Scripture, to experience God's amazing truth for themselves.

Book Why We re Catholic

  • Author : Trent Horn
  • Publisher : Catholic Answers Press
  • Release : 2017-05
  • ISBN : 9781683570240
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Why We re Catholic written by Trent Horn and published by Catholic Answers Press. This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How can you believe all this stuff? This is the number-one question Catholics get asked and, sometimes, we ask ourselves. Why do we believe that God exists, that he became a man and came to save us, that what looks like a wafer of bread is actually his body? Why do we believe that he inspired a holy book and founded an infallible Church to teach us the one true way to live? Ever since he became Catholic, Trent Horn has spent a lot of time answering these questions, trying to explain to friends, family, and total strangers the reasons for his Catholic faith. Some didn't believe in God, or even in the existence of truth. Others said they were spiritual but didn't think you needed religion to be happy. Some were Christians who thought Catholic doctrines over-complicated the pure gospel. And some were fellow Catholics who had a hard time understanding everything they professed to believe on Sunday. Why We're Catholic assembles the clearest, friendliest, most helpful answers that Trent learned to give to all these people and more. Beginning with how we can know reality and ending with our hope of eternal life, it s the perfect way to help skeptics and seekers (or Catholics who want to firm up their faith) understand the evidence that bolsters our belief and brings us joy" --

Book What Is the Mission of the Church

Download or read book What Is the Mission of the Church written by Kevin DeYoung and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social justice and mission are hot topics today: there's a wonderful resurgence of motivated Christians passionate about spreading the gospel and caring for the needs of others. But in our zeal to get sharing and serving, many are unclear on gospel and mission. Yes, we are called to spend ourselves for the sake of others, but what is the church's unique priority as it engages the world? DeYoung and Gilbert write to help Christians "articulate and live out their views on the mission of the church in ways that are theologically faithful, exegetically careful, and personally sustainable." Looking at the Bible's teaching on evangelism, social justice, and shalom, they explore the what, why, and how of the church's mission. From defining "mission", to examining key passages on social justice and their application, to setting our efforts in the context of God's rule, DeYoung and Gilbert bring a wise, studied perspective to the missional conversation. Readers in all spheres of ministry will grow in their understanding of the mission of the church and gain a renewed sense of urgency for Jesus' call to preach the Word and make disciples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ONE TRUE CHURCH The Only Church That Christ Established is the Catholic Church By Father Damen 1855 "He that believeth an is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be condemned." Mark xvi. 16. My Dearly Beloved Christians: -From these words of our Divine Saviour, it has already been proved to you, that faith in necessary for salvation, and without faith there is no salvation; without faith there is eternal damnation. Read you own Protestant Bible, 16th verse of St. Mark, and you will find it stronger there than in the Catholic Bible. Now then, what kind of faith must a man have to be saved? Will any faith do? Why, if any faith will do, the devil himself will be saved, for the Bible says the devils believe and tremble. It is, therefore, not a matter of indifference what religion a man professes; he must profess the right and true religion, and without that there is no salvation, for it stands to reason, my dear people, that if God reveals a thing or teaches a thing, He wants to be believed. Not to believe is to insult God. Doubting His words, or to believe even with doubt and hesitating, is an insult to God, because it is doubting His Sacred Word. We must, therefore, believe without doubting, without hesitating. I have said, our of the Catholic Church there is no divine faith-can be no divine faith out of that Church. Some of the Protestant friends will be shocked at this, to hear me say that out of the Catholic Church there is no divine faith, and that without faith there is no salvation, but damnation. I will prove all I have said. I have said that out of the Catholic Church there can be no divine faith. What is divine faith? When we believe a thing upon the authority of God, and believe it without doubt, without hesitating. Now, all our separated brethren outside of the Catholic Church take the private interpretation of the Bible for their guide; but the private interpretation of the Bible can never give them divine faiths.

Book The Remnant Church

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ExplanationIn 1934 Elder W. C. White and D. E. Robinson at the Elmshaven office drew together from published and unpublished E. G. White sources materials relating to the church, its organization, authority, unity, and the relationship of workers one to another. The 50 page document which resulted was read by the White Trustees with appreciation, but for reasons not too clear just now, the document at that time was not carried through to publication. It was placed in the document file and has been kept there safely for 38 years, with only occasional reference to it.With the occasion to look at the counsels relating to the church and its authority, this document, during the last few days, has been reviewed. The impression is growing that its publication might well serve the church. The basic premises are clearly enunciated in published sources. Nonetheless, as Ellen White again and again reiterated in sermons, manuscripts and letters basic truths concerning the church and its ministry, the varying statements seem to enrich that which may be read on the subject. For study purposes, in a few copies the lines have been numbered. Any use of unpublished items must for the present be restricted to committee study. Undoubtedly, on consideration they will in time be released for general use. The situation, however, would lead to the request that copies used by the committee be returned to the White Estate until the matters have been properly processed.Ellen G. White Estate.Washington, D. Book excerpt: "Church as I know it usually leaves deep parts of me dormant, unawakened, and untouched. I don't much like going. So, what now?" What's happening to the Church? Why are so many people who for decades have been faithful, steady churchgoers (and others who want to start going to church but can't seem to find one that meets their needs) losing interest in even attending church, let alone getting involved? What is fundamentally wrong with the "types" of churches (Seeker, Bible, Emergent, Liberal, Evangelical) that dot the religious landscape? Larry Crabb believes it is time to rethink the entire foundation and focus of what we know today as church -- everything we're doing and are wanting to see happen. In his most honest and vulnerable book to date, the author reveals his own struggles in this area and then offers a compelling vision of why God designed us to live in community with Him and others, and what the church he wants to be a part of looks like.
