Download or read book Lectures on Logic written by Georg W. F. Hegel and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-02 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel gave many lectures in logic at Berlin University between 1818 and his untimely death in 1831. Edited posthumously by Hegel's son, Karl, these lectures were published in German in 2001 and now appear in English for the first time. Because they were delivered orally, Lectures on Logic is more approachable and colloquial than much of Hegel's formal philosophy. The lectures provide important insight into Hegel's science of logic, dialectical method, and symbolic logic. Clark Butler's smooth translation helps readers understand the rationality of Hegel's often dark and difficult thought. Readers at all levels will find a mature and particularly clear presentation of Hegel's systematic philosophical vision.

Book Hegel on Logic and Religion

Download or read book Hegel on Logic and Religion written by John W. Burbidge and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1992-08-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinction often missed by Hegelian interpreters is that, for Hegel, logic functions differently when it is applied to the contingencies of nature and history. Burbidge shows that Hegel did not claim to have reached the end of history. The future is open.

Book Johan van Benthem on Logic and Information Dynamics

Download or read book Johan van Benthem on Logic and Information Dynamics written by Alexandru Baltag and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 1072 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates the program of Logical-Informational Dynamics. Rational agents exploit the information available in the world in delicate ways, adopt a wide range of epistemic attitudes, and in that process, constantly change the world itself. Logical-Informational Dynamics is about logical systems putting such activities at center stage, focusing on the events by which we acquire information and change attitudes. Its contributions show many current logics of information and change at work, often in multi-agent settings where social behavior is essential, and often stressing Johan van Benthem's pioneering work in establishing this program. However, this is not a Festschrift, but a rich tapestry for a field with a wealth of strands of its own. The reader will see the state of the art in such topics as information update, belief change, preference, learning over time, and strategic interaction in games. Moreover, no tight boundary has been enforced, and some chapters add more general mathematical or philosophical foundations or links to current trends in computer science. The theme of this book lies at the interface of many disciplines. Logic is the main methodology, but the various chapters cross easily between mathematics, computer science, philosophy, linguistics, cognitive and social sciences, while also ranging from pure theory to empirical work. Accordingly, the authors of this book represent a wide variety of original thinkers from different research communities. And their interconnected themes challenge at the same time how we think of logic, philosophy and computation. Thus, very much in line with van Benthem's work over many decades, the volume shows how all these disciplines form a natural unity in the perspective of dynamic logicians (broadly conceived) exploring their new themes today. And at the same time, in doing so, it offers a broader conception of logic with a certain grandeur, moving its horizons beyond the traditional study of consequence relations.

Book Notes on Logic and Set Theory

Download or read book Notes on Logic and Set Theory written by P. T. Johnstone and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-10-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short textbook provides a succinct introduction to mathematical logic and set theory, which together form the foundations for the rigorous development of mathematics. It will be suitable for all mathematics undergraduates coming to the subject for the first time. The book is based on lectures given at the University of Cambridge and covers the basic concepts of logic: first order logic, consistency, and the completeness theorem, before introducing the reader to the fundamentals of axiomatic set theory. There are also chapters on recursive functions, the axiom of choice, ordinal and cardinal arithmetic and the incompleteness theorems. Dr Johnstone has included numerous exercises designed to illustrate the key elements of the theory and to provide applications of basic logical concepts to other areas of mathematics. Consequently the book, while making an attractive first textbook for those who plan to specialise in logic, will be particularly valuable for mathematics and computer scientists whose primary interests lie elsewhere.

Book Samson Abramsky on Logic and Structure in Computer Science and Beyond

Download or read book Samson Abramsky on Logic and Structure in Computer Science and Beyond written by Alessandra Palmigiano and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-02 with total page 1149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samson Abramsky’s wide-ranging contributions to logical and structural aspects of Computer Science have had a major influence on the field. This book is a rich collection of papers, inspired by and extending Abramsky’s work. It contains both survey material and new results, organised around six major themes: domains and duality, game semantics, contextuality and quantum computation, comonads and descriptive complexity, categorical and logical semantics, and probabilistic computation. These relate to different stages and aspects of Abramsky’s work, reflecting its exceptionally broad scope and his ability to illuminate and unify diverse topics. Chapters in the volume include a review of his entire body of work, spanning from philosophical aspects to logic, programming language theory, quantum theory, economics and psychology, and relating it to a theory of unification of sciences using dual adjunctions. The section on game semantics shows how Abramsky’s work has led to a powerful new paradigm for the semantics of computation. The work on contextuality and categorical quantum mechanics has been highly influential, and provides the foundation for increasingly widely used methods in quantum computing. The work on comonads and descriptive complexity is building bridges between currently disjoint research areas in computer science, relating Structure to Power. The volume also includes a scientific autobiography, and an overview of the contributions. The outstanding set of contributors to this volume, including both senior and early career academics, serve as testament to Samson Abramsky’s enduring influence. It will provide an invaluable and unique resource for both students and established researchers.

Book Heidegger on Logic

  • Author : Filippo Casati
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2022-09-22
  • ISBN : 1108863868
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Heidegger on Logic written by Filippo Casati and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does adherence to the principles of logic commit us to a particular way of viewing the world? Or are there ways of being – ways of behaving in the world, including ways of thinking, feeling, and speaking – that ground the normative constraints that logic imposes? Does the fact that assertions, the traditional elements of logic, are typically made about beings present a problem for metaphysical (or post-metaphysical) prospects of making assertions meaningfully about being? Does thinking about being (as opposed to beings) accordingly require revising or restricting logic's reach – and, if so, how is this possible? Or is there something precious about the very idea of thinking the limits of thinking? Contemporary scholars have become increasing sensitive to how Heidegger, much like Wittgenstein, instructively poses such questions. Heidegger on Logic is a collection of new essays by leading scholars who critically ponder the efficacy of his responses to them.

Book Wittgenstein s Notes on Logic

Download or read book Wittgenstein s Notes on Logic written by Michael Potter and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-01-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wittgenstein's philosophical career began in 1911 when he went to Cambridge to work with Russell. He compiled the Notes on Logic two years later as a kind of summary of the work he had done so far. Russell thought that they were 'as good as anything that has ever been done in logic', but he had Wittgenstein himself to explain them to him. Without the benefit of Wittgenstein's explanations, most later scholars have preferred to treat the Notes solely as an interpretative aid in understanding the Tractatus (which draws on them for material), rather than as a philosophical work in their own right. Michael Potter unequivocally demonstrates the philosophical and historical importance of the Notes for the first time. By teasing out the meaning of key passages, he shows how many of the most important insights in the Tractatus they contain. He discusses in detail how Wittgenstein arrived at these insights by thinking through ideas he obtained from Russell and Frege. And he uses a challenging blend of biography and philosophy to illuminate the methods Wittgenstein used in his work. The book features the complete text of the Notes in a critical edition, with a detailed discussion of the circumstances in which they were compiled, leading to a new understanding of how they should be read.

Book Frege s lectures on logic

Download or read book Frege s lectures on logic written by Gottlob Frege and published by Open Court Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By looking at Frege's lectures on logic through the eyes of the young Carnap, this book casts new light on the history of logic and analytic philosophy. As two introductory essays by Gottfried Gabriel and by Erich H. Reck and Steve Awodey explain, Carnap's notes allow us to better understand Frege's deep influence on Carnap and analytic philosophy, as well as the broader philosophical matrix from which both continental and analytic styles of thought emerged in the 20th century."--BOOK JACKET.
