Consequently, many educational institutions have integrated teaching and learning systems with technology, and learners nationwide are embracing the flexibility of online education. Online education is a new educational delivery mode in Saudi Arabia, which has been influenced by economic and social changes. As a result, the impact has created an increased demand for graduate degrees as online education has created the opportunity for Saudi women to access higher education. Thus, for Saudi female students, who want to study and work simultaneously, online education is possibly feasible option. Through online education, female Saudi students are able to obtain an education at home with flexibility, and the number of Saudi students taking online education has significantly increased. This thesis analyzes what female Saudi students in the United States have experienced about online education, and their attitudes toward online education.

Book excerpt: Students seeking higher education outside their country of origin is a growing phenomenon. The United States is the largest host nation but has been losing market share as other countries increase their efforts to recruit international students. Surprisingly, after several years of decline, the rate of growth in students from Saudi Arabia has surpassed the rate of growth for all foreign students choosing higher education institutions (HEIs) in the United States since 2006. The history of international education in the United States and the current state of education in the Middle East provided background for an analysis of the political factors that resulted in the change. This dissertation also assessed the mechanisms of choice and motivations of Saudis students that led to attending an HEI in the United States. Student choice theory, expectancy theory, economic theories including human capital theory and comparative advantage, students as consumers, and social constructs such as intergroup contact and diffusion of innovation theory were used to design semi-structured interviews among various stakeholder and an online survey of Saudi students to learn how and why they chose the HEI they currently attended. Saudi students were influenced in their decision to study in the United States by the availability of scholarships from the Saudi government and by the implementation of the SEVIP visa system that facilitated their choice of country. In addition, Saudi students were asked about their experiences at HEIs in the United States and their attitudes toward the United States, western social and political norms and possible modernization of Saudi society. These results were compared to survey data from students who remained in Saudi Arabia for higher education. The comparison shows that Saudi students in the U.S. have a more favorable opinion of the United States than before studying here, increased approval for greater gender equality and western values such as respect for human rights and women's education and employment. This research contains recommendations for HEIs that want to recruit Saudi students and improve their integration into the campus community.

This dissertation also seeks to engage bigger questions about young people's intimate relationships with ICTs and the nuances of the networked spaces in which they experience life online as students and citizens coming of age as members of the digital generation.

To estimate the impact of American culture on the attitudes of Saudi students in America, they were compared with the attitudes of Saudi students in Saudi Arabia toward Saudi women's participation in the labor force which were investigated by Al-Otaiby (1987). The means and standard deviations for each item in the scale measuring attitudes toward Saudi women's participation in the labor force were utilized. The comparison showed that Saudi students in the United States had more liberal attitudes than Saudi students in Saudi Arabia.

Book excerpt: Recently, research on study abroad has received particular attention. The majority of these studies, however, involve individuals (typically American) who study in European settings or focus on studies about Eastern Asian (i.e., Japanese or Chinese) students coming to an English-Speaking country, such as, the United States and the United Kingdom. Not a single study investigates the experience of Saudi Arabians' or Middle Easterners in a study abroad context. Thus, the goal of this paper is contribute to the field of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) in exploring the journey of Saudi students as learners of English in the United States and how they see themselves changing as individuals and as learners. Also explored is how this experience of being away from one's own community plays a role in shaping one's identity and perceptions. Hence, the study aims to look at the totality of the Saudi students' experiences as people who arrived from and with a cultural, educational, and religious system that holds very different values and beliefs than those imbedded in the American culture. What would happen to a Saudi learner's social identity when inappropriate concepts within his or her culture (i.e., alcohol consumption) are encountered as appropriate within the host culture (America) or vice versa? How does his or her perception as individual and as learner change as a result of being exposed to and acquiring English as a second language in the United States? In order to answer the abovementioned questions, the following qualitative study is constructed. The data were collected by conducting extensive, one-to-one, ethnographic interviews with five Saudi participants (3 males and 2 females) using their native language, Arabic, in an attempt to fully capture the nature of their experiences. The participants were newly arrived, six months to one year, to the United States with low English proficiency and they were enrolled in intensive English program. The interviews were audio-recorded and ranged from 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending upon participants' individuality. The data were then transcribed and coded in Arabic, and for presentational purposes, excerpts were translated into English. The data were coded using grounded content analysis. Using the grounded content analysis, the researcher found three super-ordinate categories: 1) educational views, 2) intercultural views, and 3) comparative views. Each of these super-ordinate categories included a number of subcategories, ranging from two to four themes, in an attempt to systematize the data and to better understand the participants' narrative. After the dissection of the data, some possible implication suggested for the Saudi English education, specifically, and for the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, generally. The researcher personal experience as an English learner in Saudi Arabia and, later, an English learner in the US, served as one of the motivating reasons behind this study. Learning English in Saudi Arabia, where the system followed a form-based approach to language learning, focusing on structural features of the language while excluding the culture associated with the English language, had a major impact on the experiences of studying abroad in the United States. Thus, the significance of this project is to inform the Saudi English educational system the relative importance of learning cultural knowledge about the target culture and understanding English as a social practice, rather than just grammatical forms to be memorized.

Book excerpt: Cultural differences between Saudi and American students produce immense challenges to a successful integrative acculturation. Positive experiences can not only enhance the education of international students, but also effect understandings and attitudes of local students, administrators, faculty, and staff. A greater implication of these experiences may be their influence on long term international relationships. Few qualitative studies have been conducted that examine the dynamics of the cultural integration of Saudi students with American students during the acculturation process. The purpose of this qualitative research, therefore, is to describe and interpret the experiences and perceptions of Saudi Arabian students as they integrated with American host students on project-based, team learning assignments. These semi-structured team environments required members to interact, resolve conflicts, contribute to problem solving, and exhibit leadership. Using a phenomenological approach, 10 Saudi students studying at a rural Midwestern U.S. university participated in a series of three semi-structured open ended interviews. These interviews capture the experiences and perceptions of the participants as they interacted with host students within and beyond their project team environment, and revealed experiences within the host community that influenced their team acculturation. From the rich interview data, findings were derived that added clarity to Saudi acculturation. Prominent findings from this research reveal the encompassing effects of language deficiencies, lack of understanding of the local culture, difficulties adjusting to a mixed gender environment, neo-racism, and incompatibilities in the held values between the Saudis and the host. Most of the Saudi participants found that these barriers were surmountable and could be overcome through resilient thinking and by developing positive and meaningful relationships with their host team members. Findings also reveal the supportive role that the course instructor can play as well as campus interventions (including project based, team learning assignments) that can advantage the acculturation experience.
