Download or read book Frankfort written by Susan R. Perkins and Caryl Hopson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2013, the village of Frankfort celebrated the 150th anniversary of its 1863 incorporation. It was a prime opportunity to recognize the historical heritage of the village and the surrounding township of Frankfort, incorporated in 1796. Many of the original hamlets, such as West Frankfort, Frankfort Center, and Frankfort Hill, still exist. Thanks to its advantageous location astride the Erie Canal-West Shore Railroad corridor, the village attracted a wide variety of industry. The railroad established a major repair-and-renovation facility, which later became home to manufacturing companies producing machine tools, agricultural implements, and highway equipment used throughout the nation. The world's first continuous match-making machine was invented here, and the famous aeronauts Carl and Carlotta Myers drew national attention with their involvement in a new national passion: hot-air ballooning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antislavery agitation is rocking Utica in 1835 when a young bride discovers an enslaved family hiding in her shed, setting in motion the exhumation of long-buried family secrets. “In this eloquent debut, a diverse cast of characters embodies the political, class, and racial upheavals of its time and milieu, and does it all in living local color . . . [A] powerful look at the prologue to Emancipation.” —Kirkus Reviews It’s 1835 in Utica, New York, and newlywed Helen Galway discovers a secret: two people who have escaped enslavement are hiding in the shack behind her husband’s house. Suddenly, she is at the center of the era’s greatest moral dilemma: Should she be a “good wife” and report the fugitives? Or will she defy convention and come to their aid? Within her home, Helen is haunted by the previous Mrs. Galway, recently deceased but still an oppressive presence. Her husband, injured by a drunken tumble off his horse, is assisted by a doctor of questionable ambitions who keeps a close eye on Helen. In charge of all things domestic is Maggie—formerly enslaved by the Galway family and freed when emancipation came to New York eight years earlier. Abolitionists arriving in Utica to found the New York State Anti-Slavery Society are accused by the local papers of being traitors to the Constitution. Everyone faces dangerous choices as they navigate this intensely heated personal and political landscape.
Download or read book In Gotham s Shadow written by Alexander R. Thomas and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what may be the first explicitly comparative study of the effects of globalization on metropolitan and rural communities, In Gotham's Shadow examines how three central New York communities struggled over the last half century to survive in a global economy that seems to have forgotten them. Utica, formerly a city of one hundred thousand, experienced the same trends of suburbanization, deindustrialization, and urban renewal as nearly every American city, with the same mixed results. In Cooperstown and Hartwick, two small villages forty miles south of Utica, the same trends were at work, though with different outcomes. Hartwick may be seen as an example of how small towns have lost their core, while Cooperstown may be seen as an example of how a small town can survive by transforming itself into a tourist destination. Thomas provides extensive historical background mixed with newspaper excerpts and lively interviews that add a human dimension to the transformations these communities have experienced.

Download or read book Halls of Fame written by David Blevins and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hall of fame concept, once limited primarily to sports, is growing rapidly as more groups, organizations and associations are building shrines to honor their past, highlight their heroes and display their artifacts and memorabilia. It is estimated that there are at least 500 physical halls of fame throughout the world, a vast majority of them located in the United States. Whatever the actual number, this work documents more than 450 of them in more than 45 states and 15 countries. In addition to the halls of fame that most readers would expect to find, such as the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the World Golf Hall of Fame, this work includes many more obscure halls of fame, such as the American Furniture Hall of Fame, Burlesque Hall of Fame, Cartoon Hall of Fame, Casino Legends Hall of Fame, Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, Crayola Hall of Fame, Quackery Hall of Fame, and the World Kite Museum and Hall of Fame. The entries provide contact information, including the hall's address and telephone number, and in most instances, its fax number, website and email address, and hours of operation. The entries also alert readers to admission charges and provide a brief history of the hall and a list of notable inductees.
