Book excerpt: "Wearing one crown, with a gem of every belief known, He is the God of Many Faces".Uplifting experiences, no matter our country of origin, depend on our ability, as human beings, to be open to other points of view. We were made to be different and are expected to think as individuals. Therefore, our thoughts and beliefs are worthy of respect. We all have a story. It is not the responsibility of religion, or non-religion, to create peace in the world, but rather humanity and the way we treat each other. My highest appeal to mankind is that we learn to best coexist through love which conquers all. This book takes the reader on a journey of thought-provoking views to dismantle the very idea that the Creator could only exist in one form, bearing one face.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, theologians and philosophers have brought about profound changes in the discourse about God. The orthodox image of God, developed in the previous seventeen centuries in Roman Catholicism, as well as within Protestantism, has come under great pressure, but it would be wrong to think that this image is no longer relevant and that only a few conservative Christians hold on to it.
Download or read book Oil and Water written by Amir Hussain and published by Wood Lake Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listen to any news broadcast today and the message comes through loud and clear: Islam is a religion of violence and behind every Muslim there lurks a potential terrorist. Islam is a threat to values of the Christian West. They are like oil and water. Clearly, they don't mix. Oil & Water: Two Faiths One God confronts these popular perceptions head-on. With keen insight and gentle understanding, it explores the differences between Christianity and Islam, as well as the many things these two enduring faith traditions hold in common - including, first and foremost, their belief in and desire to be faithful to the one, true God; their shared roots and scripture (from the Jewish faith); and the spiritual values of peace and social justice. Written for Christians by Muslim world-religions scholar Amir Hussain, the book is divided into two parts. Part 1, provides an overview of the Islamic faith and of the lives of Muslims in North America today. Chapters focus on the place and identity of Muslims in society, as well as on the importance and role of Muhammad, the Qur'an, and basic beliefs and practices (The Five Pillars of Islam). Having provided a foundation for understanding, the book moves on, in Part 2, to explore key points for dialogue today, including issues of violence and jihad, the roles of women and men, and the mystical tradition within Islam. The final two chapters look at interfaith dialogue and the practical aspects of being good "neighbours." In all of this, the book invites the reader to a place of reconciliation, to a place where the truth and value of each of these great faith traditions can be recognized and honoured by the other. In the end, the metaphor of oil and water is an interesting one for the reality of conflict and the hope for reconciliation between Islam and Christianity today.

Download or read book God is Not One written by Stephen Prothero and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating guide to religion and its place in the world today. In God Is Not One, bestselling author Stephen Prothero makes a fresh and provocative argument that, contrary to popular understanding, all religions are not simply “different paths to the same God.” Instead, he shows that the differences between the major religions are far greater than we think: they each ask different questions, tackle different problems, and aim at different goals. God Is Not One highlights the unique aspects of the world’s major religions, with chapters on Islam, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Yoruba religion, Judaism, Daoism and atheism. Lucid and compelling, God Is Not One offers a new understanding of religion for the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: People submit to religions and commit to several concepts of morality. We decide who we like based on simple tastes. The communities of humanity seem split in many diverse cultures. Can we bridge the differences of our controversial preferences? When does love become a cash grab? When do forceful tendencies become psychologically unappealing? These are a few of the questions I challenge in this perceptual take on what it means to have a sense of community.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Download or read book The Many Faces of God written by Walter Prucnel and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God looked at the earth with despair. He knew the future of earth was dismal; it was prone to the pollutions created by man. Worse yet, people in many countries were killing others for their different religious beliefs. Gone was the day of the cross and bow when men fought each other face to face. Now many countries were making weapons that could travel great distances to kill millions. This both saddened and angered Him and He knew something had to be done. Should I create another flood? Have everyone turned into salt? No, none of these would work because many souls would be sent to Hell and Satan could not accommodate that many. He could perform miracles to improve these conditions, but that would take away the Earthlings' freewill. The only solution was for the Earthlings to improve their own fate with a little help from Him. Summoning his Undergods, He gave them instructions to choose a few Earthlings, approach them through apparitions and give them minor powers, which would aid them in their missions. Thus, The Many Faces of God begins.

Download or read book The Little House on Genessee written by John S. Fort Wayne Indiana and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John S. turned his little house on Genessee Avenue in Fort Wayne, Indiana, into a place where he sponsored, over the years, a long series of alcoholics and addicts, and led them to sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous and the twelve steps. Many of these people came from very rough backgrounds, including hardened ex-cons and people who rode in motorcycle gangs, but what you see in them now is a combination of strength and gentleness, of fearlessness and kindness, and of what is still the old toughness, but mixed now with a marvelous depth of love and spiritual presence. In this book he and seven of the people he sponsored tell the story of how their alcoholism and addiction led them into lives of desperation and despair, but how practicing a set of simple daily actions enabled them to recover from their seemingly hopeless affliction. In John's early life he was a great sailor, using St. John in the Virgin Islands as his base and taking fast sailboats for adventure and commerce through the waters of the Southern Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. He worked for many years at a special martial arts dojo, and rode motorcycles which could outrun anything else on the road. But in 1985, he put aside alcohol and drugs, and by 1994 he was devising the method which he lays out in this book. Eleven of the first twelve people he tried it on got sober and stayed sober. It is built on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Joe and Charlie tapes, and the teachings of the good Fort Wayne physician Dr. Zweig. John boils it down into something so simple that anyone can understand how to do it. And it works! People all over John's part of the country have seen it work for the past 18 years, again and again, for the toughest, the angriest, the most rebellious, and the most self-destructive alcoholics and addicts in the world.

Download or read book The Human Faces of God written by Thom Stark and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does accepting the doctrine of biblical inspiration necessitate belief in biblical inerrancy? The Bible has always functioned authoritatively in the life of the church, but what exactly should that mean? Must it mean the Bible is without error in all historical details and ethical teachings? What should thoughtful Christians do with texts that propose God is pleased by human sacrifice or that God commanded Israel to commit acts of genocide? What about texts that contain historical errors or predictions that have gone unfulfilled long beyond their expiration dates? In The Human Faces of God, Thom Stark moves beyond notions of inerrancy in order to confront such problematic texts and open up a conversation about new ways they can be used in service of the church and its moral witness today. Readers looking for an academically informed yet accessible discussion of the Bible's thorniest texts will find a thought-provoking and indispensible resource in The Human Faces of God.
