Download or read book Birth Strike written by Jenny Brown and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When House Speaker Paul Ryan urged U.S. women to have more children, and Ross Douthat requested “More babies, please,” in a New York Times column, they openly expressed what policymakers have been discussing for decades with greater discretion. Using technical language like “age structure,” “dependency ratio,” and “entitlement crisis,” establishment think tanks are raising the alarm: if U.S. women don’t get busy having more children, we’ll face an aging workforce, slack consumer demand, and a stagnant economy. Feminists generally believe that a prudish religious bloc is responsible for the protracted fight over reproductive freedom in the U.S. and that politicians only attack abortion and birth control to appeal to those “values voters.” But hidden behind this conventional explanation is a dramatic fight over women’s reproductive labor. On one side, elite policymakers want an expanding workforce reared with a minimum of employer spending and a maximum of unpaid women’s work. On the other side, women are refusing to produce children at levels desired by economic planners. By some measures our birth rate is the lowest it has ever been. With little access to childcare, family leave, health care, and with insufficient male participation, U.S. women are conducting a spontaneous birth strike. In other countries, panic over low birth rates has led governments to underwrite childbearing and childrearing with generous universal programs, but in the U.S., women have not yet realized the potential of our bargaining position. When we do, it will lead to new strategies for winning full access to abortion and birth control, and for improving the difficult working conditions U.S. parents now face when raising children.

Download or read book They Have Revelation Absolutely Wrong written by Brother Fred and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first title I had for this book was; "GETTING OUT OF HELL". Because that is one main point we all were taught & still no one Preaches ALL must come out of hell. It's in Rev. 20:13 and is plainly written. Pastors don't preach it because they can't explain the "Lake of Fire" that most go to from Hell. Some of those getting out of hell at the 2nd Resurrection will go to the New Earth. That's why the Book of Life is open AGAIN at the 2nd Res. Rev 20:15. Then who really burns forever & ever in the Lake of Fire? Again not ALL. Rev 14:9-11 says ONLY those who do 3 specific things will be tormented for ever. All who ever lived on earth who do not do THOSE 3 things will eventually receive the 2nd death after they have paid for all, all, all their sins on earth. Even "idle words". That's why the Lake is called the "second death" also. Then I got to thinking of all the other things they got wrong that are JUST as important & decided to just call the book "ABSOLUTELY WRONG". I ask readers to please check this book with any book on Rev by any Denomination or Scholar & compare them with that Holy Spirit that indwells all Christians. I say over & over in this book they must "learn to know His leading & stop believing everything they hear from the pulpit. "If the blind [leaders] lead the blind [followers] BOTH fall into the ditch" [of hell]. There is a New Earth but no Pastor seems to know exactly who gets it. I show you this. One last thing is the so called "Tribulation Saints" are NOT anyone who is saved DURING the Tribulation. No one can who did not accept Christ can be saved after the Great Trib starts. They are 2 tribulations anyway. The first we ALL go into. In this book you will know for "sure" who the 2 Witnesses are. Christians can never ask a non Christian who has followed Hindu, Islam etc to check their teaching they have followed 1,000's of years, when they won't re-check their denominational one they followed a few 100 years. There are 2 places to spend eternal life. One is in Heaven with a Spiritual body. The other is on the New Earth with a new physical body. You will KNOW who gets which & why. Jesus only Preached Heaven because we all can make Heaven IF we get the Gospel right.
Download or read book Delinquency and Juvenile Justice in American Society written by Randall G. Shelden and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensively revised, the second edition blends theory, research, and applications into a superb overview of the complex issues surrounding juvenile delinquency and societys attempts to address juvenile crime. After providing an excellent historical foundation, Shelden presents the theories essential to understanding crime and delinquency. He then explores the system and its effects on juveniles and society, including comprehensive coverage of female delinquency. The social, legal, and political influences on how the public perceives juveniles and the inequality in U.S. society that affects families, communities, and schools are highlighted throughout the book. The concluding chapter looks at solutions that have worked and identifies trends in treating juvenile delinquency. The authors almost four decades of teaching about and researching juveniles and the system make him eminently qualified to offer readers the tools necessary to think critically about delinquency and to evaluate the policies enacted to manage the juveniles who violate the laws. Delinquency and Juvenile Justice in American Society, 2/E provides affordable, up-to-date, easily accessible, and thorough analysis of a significant topic.
Download or read book The Dynamics of Social Welfare Policy written by Joel Blau and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of The Dynamics of Social Welfare Policy reinvented the standard social welfare policy text to speak to students in a vital new way. This second edition builds on its strengths, with a more accessible graphic design and a thorough update of the effects of recent political and legislative changes on social welfare programs. The book begins by discussing how social problems are constructed. After an analysis of social welfare policy, its purposes, and functions, a unique policy model bolsters the text's overarching progressive narrative. Through this model, students learn how five key social forces-ideology, politics, history, economics, and social movements-interact both to create and to change the social welfare system. By applying this model to five critical social welfare policy issues-income security, employment, housing, health, and food-the text demonstrates to students that every kind of social work practice embodies a social welfare policy. The model is also telling in identifying the triggers of social change and the effects of race, class, and gender. By applying the policy model to the latest developments in social welfare, the chapter-long case studies in this second edition equip students with knowledge about social welfare policy and the tools for comparative analysis. With this knowledge, students begin to understand that both the whole and the parts of the social welfare system affect what they actually do as social workers. Once they grasp this concept, they'll understand why it is so important to learn social welfare policy. The Dynamics of Social Welfare Policy 2E captures the fluidity and change inherent in social policy like no other textbook. Its approach remains the most invigorating, forward-thinking one available. Highlights from this edition include: * Revised data in text, charts, and graphs show how government policies are proving the points made throughout the chapters *Exhaustive statistics are included about every major social program's budget, benefits, and participants *Underlying policy model has been updated in response to the evolving political environment *Content and writing style are appropriate to both bachelor's- and master's-level programs *More graphics and attractive new two-color interior design make debates easier to grasp and the book easier to navigate Visit www.oup.com/us/dynamics for access to the instructor's manual and test bank.
Download or read book Afro Dog written by Bénédicte Boisseron and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The animal-rights organization PETA asked “Are Animals the New Slaves?” in a controversial 2005 fundraising campaign; that same year, after the Humane Society rescued pets in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina while black residents were neglected, some declared that white America cares more about pets than black people. These are but two recent examples of a centuries-long history in which black life has been pitted against animal life. Does comparing human and animal suffering trivialize black pain, or might the intersections of racialization and animalization shed light on interlinked forms of oppression? In Afro-Dog, Bénédicte Boisseron investigates the relationship between race and the animal in the history and culture of the Americas and the black Atlantic, exposing a hegemonic system that compulsively links and opposes blackness and animality to measure the value of life. She analyzes the association between black civil disobedience and canine repression, a history that spans the era of slavery through the use of police dogs against protesters during the civil rights movement of the 1960s to today in places like Ferguson, Missouri. She also traces the lineage of blackness and the animal in Caribbean literature and struggles over minorities’ right to pet ownership alongside nuanced readings of Derrida and other French theorists. Drawing on recent debates on black lives and animal welfare, Afro-Dog reframes the fast-growing interest in human–animal relationships by positioning blackness as a focus of animal inquiry, opening new possibilities for animal studies and black studies to think side by side.
