Download or read book One Small Farm written by Craig Schreiner and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “People’s lives are written on the fields of old farms. The rows of the fields are like lines on a page, blank and white in winter, filled in with each year’s story of happiness, disappointment, drought, rain, sun, scarcity, plenty. The chapters accumulate, and people enter and leave the narrative. Only the farm goes on.”—From the Introduction In One Small Farm, Craig Schreiner’s evocative color photographs capture one family as they maintain the rhythms and routines of small farm life near Pine Bluff, Wisconsin. “Milk in the morning and milk at night. Feed the cows and calves. Plant crops. Grind feed. Chop and bale hay. Cut wood. Clean the barn. Spread manure on the fields. Plow snow and split wood in winter. In spring, pick rocks from the fields. Cultivate corn. Pick corn. Harvest oats and barley. Help calves be born. Milk in the morning and milk at night.” There’s much more to life on the farm than just chores, of course, and Schreiner captures the rhythms and richness of everyday life on the farm in all seasons, evoking both the challenges and the joys and providing viewers a window into a world that is quickly fading. In documenting the Lamberty family’s daily work and life, these thoughtful photos explore larger questions concerning the future of small farm agriculture, Wisconsin cultural traditions, and the rural way of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With humor and pathos, Forrest Pritchard recounts his ambitious and often hilarious endeavors to save his family’s seventh-generation farm in the Shenandoah Valley. Through many a trial and error, he not only saves Smith Meadows from insolvency but turns it into a leading light in the sustainable, grass-fed, organic farm-to-market community. There is nothing young Farmer Pritchard won’t try. Whether he’s selling firewood and straw, raising free-range chickens and hogs, or acquiring a flock of Barbados Blackbelly sheep, his learning curve is steep and always entertaining. Pritchard’s world crackles with colorful local characters—farm hands, butchers, market managers, customers, fellow vendors, pet goats, policemen—bringing the story to warm, communal life. His most important ally, however, is his renegade father, who initially questions his son's career choice and eschews organic foods for the generic kinds that wreak havoc on his health. Soon after his father’s death, the farm becomes a recognized success and Pritchard must make a vital decision: to continue serving the local community or answer the exploding demand for his wares with lucrative Internet sales and shipping deals. More than a charming story of honest food cultivation and farmers’ markets, Gaining Ground tugs on the heartstrings, reconnecting us to the land and the many lives that feed us.

Book excerpt: While growing up in a large South Carolina sharecropper family, Sallie Peak learned the importance of using her voice to speak up, working hard, and advocating for her family and community. But little did she know that those valuable traits would eventually gift her with the fortitude and vision to create a new path of opportunity for other black girls and women. In a fascinating narrative, Peak shares insight into her childhood and beyond as she embarked on a coming-of-age journey in the 1970s when Spartanburg County was partially segregated, black children still walked to school while white children rode the bus, and female leadership was not encouraged or welcomed. As she leads others through her experiences, Sallie reveals how she, a blue collar worker, dared to step outside the box and set down a rewarding and sometimes challenging path as a public servant and the first black woman to achieve many accomplishments. A First Time for Everything is a true tale of endurance and resilience as a determined black girl transformed into a dedicated public servant in the face of degrading hardship and unequal treatment amid a segregated South.

Book excerpt: A city boy, I had little association with animals, with the exception of a male English bulldog, Fella, who was my best friend until I was fi ve years old. We played together, napped together and ate from the same bowl together when our mother wasn’t looking. His broad tongue covered my whole head in two swipes and many giggles. I was fi ve years old when he died but I remember him as though it was yesterday. Th e picture on the front cover is my Fella. He, above all others instilled in me a love for all animals. I grew up in Canada, receiving a doctorate in veterinary medicine at the University of Guelph, Ontario Veterinary College. At the age of nineteen I dedicated the next two years of my life to my church, serving as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in France and Switzerland. In the fi nal week of my mission, I had an experience I have recorded in these pages that softened my heart and my head and led me down a path to my future life’s work. Th e subsequent adventures are recorded in large part in this book. Life changing adventures and lessons learned in the small family farm barns, often in the dead of night, of central New York and northern Vermont, and within the welcome warmth of my clinic. A word of caution: if a cow has a bad cough from pneumonia, DO NOT stand behind he

Book Taming Tibet

  • Author : Emily Yeh
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2013-11-15

Download or read book Taming Tibet written by Emily Yeh and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violent protests in Lhasa in 2008 against Chinese rule were met by disbelief and anger on the part of Chinese citizens and state authorities, perplexed by Tibetans' apparent ingratitude for the generous provision of development. In Taming Tibet, Emily T. Yeh examines how Chinese development projects in Tibet served to consolidate state space and power. Drawing on sixteen months of ethnographic fieldwork between 2000 and 2009, Yeh traces how the transformation of the material landscape of Tibet between the 1950s and the first decade of the twenty-first century has often been enacted through the labor of Tibetans themselves. Focusing on Lhasa, Yeh shows how attempts to foster and improve Tibetan livelihoods through the expansion of markets and the subsidized building of new houses, the control over movement and space, and the education of Tibetan desires for development have worked together at different times and how they are experienced in everyday life. The master narrative of the PRC stresses generosity: the state and Han migrants selflessly provide development to the supposedly backward Tibetans, raising the living standards of the Han's "little brothers." Arguing that development is in this context a form of "indebtedness engineering," Yeh depicts development as a hegemonic project that simultaneously recruits Tibetans to participate in their own marginalization while entrapping them in gratitude to the Chinese state. The resulting transformations of the material landscape advance the project of state territorialization. Exploring the complexity of the Tibetan response to—and negotiations with—development, Taming Tibet focuses on three key aspects of China's modernization: agrarian change, Chinese migration, and urbanization. Yeh presents a wealth of ethnographic data and suggests fresh approaches that illuminate the Tibet Question.
