Book A Million and One Ways to be One in a Million

Download or read book A Million and One Ways to be One in a Million written by Steven J. Heaslip and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title grabs you, doesn't it? Of course everyone wants to set themselves apart from the herd. But how do you do that? And can just about anybody do that? A Million and One Ways to be One-in-a-Million answers those questions. It contains and conveys a set of lessons and examples of behavior that, if practiced, allow us to be different-different in very positive ways. Is there anyone who wakes up in the morning and says, "Today I want to go out and be part of the herd," or, "Today I think I'll just blend in with the masses"? However, doing your job well in today's business environment is the price of entry. Just doing a good job doesn't ensure success and it isn't the attribute that sets us apart. The differentiating factor really lay in being different. So in today's business culture, whether you work in a mega-multinational company, a small business venture, or even if you work on your own for yourself, in order to be most successful, we must find a way to distinguish ourselves from the rest of the pack. Companies have strived to do this with their brands and products since the birth of consumerism. But, just like with products, it's not about being gimmicky or superficial; the old "dress for success" isn't good enough and isn't where we've evolved. What this book is about is providing ways for you to differentiate yourself in a manner that is valued and appreciated, and in a way that should produce a meaningful impact to your success. Most of these observations transcend business, and actually have broad appeal and relevance that can be applied in our personal lives, thereby developing ways to become one-in-a-million with our spouses, children, friends, and colleagues. * * * * * * * * A Million and One Ways to be One-in-a-Million is specifically constructed to be a quick read catering to the needs of the target audience: a generation of Americans who, at this time in their lives, work hard and play hard, and are looking for the best bang for the buck in all that they do. As the author explains, some of the most important and impactful advice he has ever received was given in a sentence or two. A Million and One Ways to be One-in-a-Million delivers this bang for the buck.

Book excerpt: The real-life story of a family who planted 1,000,000 trees—yes, it’s true!—to fight deforestation in British Columbia. When Kristen Balouch was 10 years old, her parents made a surprising announcement: their whole family was going on a trip to plant trees! Kristen, her sisters, and her mom and dad—and their pet, Wonder Dog!—flew from their California home to a logging site in British Columbia. There, they joined a crew working to replant the trees that had been cut down. In One Million Trees, Kristen reflects on the forty days they spent living in a tent, covered in mud and bug bites, working hard every day to plant a new forest. Young readers will learn a little French, practice some math skills, and learn all about how to plant a tree the right way! The kid-friendly, engaging text is paired with bold illustrations, full of fun details and bright colors. The story ends with a modern-day look at what Kristen's family helped accomplish: a stand of huge trees growing on what used to be an empty, muddy patch of bare stumps. An author's note shares more information on deforestation, sustainable logging practices, and the irreplaceable environmental benefit of old growth forests. . . . Plus, the amazing things even a small group of people can do when they work together. A fun story with an important environmental message, One Million Trees is bound to inspire kids to get their hands dirty to make our planet healthy! Book The School of Greatness

Download or read book The School of Greatness written by Lewis Howes and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a career-ending injury left elite athlete and professional football player Lewis Howes out of work and living on his sister’s couch, he decided he needed to make a change for the better. He started by reaching out to people he admired, searching for mentors, and applying his past coaches’ advice from sports to life off the field. Lewis did more than bounce back: He built a multimillion-dollar online business and is now a sought-after business coach, speaker, and podcast host. In The School of Greatness, Howes shares the essential tips and habits he gathered in interviewing “the greats” on his wildly popular podcast of the same name. In discussion with people like Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson and Pencils of Promise CEO Adam Braun, Howes figured out that greatness is unearthed and cultivated from within. The masters of greatness are not successful because they got lucky or are innately more talented, but because they applied specific habits and tools to embrace and overcome adversity in their lives. A framework for personal development, The School of Greatness gives you the tools, knowledge, and actionable resources you need to reach your potential. Howes anchors each chapter with a specific lesson he culled from his greatness “professors” and his own experiences to teach you how to create a vision, develop hustle, and use dedication, mindfulness, joy, and love to reach goals. His lessons and practical exercises prove that anyone is capable of achieving success and that we can all strive for greatness in our everyday lives.

Book One Hundred Million Philosophers

Download or read book One Hundred Million Philosophers written by Adam Bronson and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the devastation of World War II, journalists, scholars, and citizens came together to foster a new culture of democracy in Japan. Adam Bronson explores this effort in a path-breaking study of the Institute for the Science of Thought, one of the most influential associations to emerge in the early postwar years. The institute's founders believed that the estrangement of intellectuals from the general public had contributed to the rise of fascism. To address this, they sought to develop a "science of thought" that would reconnect the world of ideas with everyday experience and thus reimagine Japan as a democratic nation, home to one hundred million philosophers. To tell the story of Science of Thought and postwar democracy, Bronson weaves together several strands of Japan's modern history that are often treated separately: the revival of interest in the social sciences and Marxism after the war, the appearance of new social movements that challenged traditional class and gender hierarchies, and the ascendance of a mass middle-class culture. This story is transnational in both connective and comparative senses. Most of the Science of Thought founders were educated in America, and they drew upon a network of American thinkers and institutions for support. They also derived inspiration from other efforts to promote a culture of democracy, ranging from thought reform campaigns in the People's Republic of China to the Mass Observation study of the British working classes. By tracing these sources of inspiration around the world, Bronson reveals the contours of a transnational intellectual milieu. Science of Thought embodied a vision of democratic experimentation that had to be re-articulated repeatedly in response to challenges that arose in connection with geopolitical events and social change, prompting the group's evolution from a small research circle in the 1940s into the standard-bearer for citizen activism in the 1960s. Through this history, Bronson argues that the significance of Science of Thought lay in the way it exemplified democracy in practice. The practical experience of the intellectuals and citizens associated with the group remains relevant to those who continue to grapple with the dilemmas of democracy today.

Book excerpt: One Million Followers, Updated Edition: How I Built a Massive Social Following in 30 Days by Brendan Kane Summary One effective approach to rapidly growing your following is to adopt an agile method that involves creating content and analyzing how people respond to it in real-time. Rather than spending years building your platform, this strategy is beneficial for those who don't have a long time to invest. The three essential steps for gaining one million followers are to develop hypotheses, conduct tests, and be willing to adapt and change. By testing various approaches, you can determine which ones yield the best results and focus your investments accordingly. Having a strong hook that captures and retains people's attention is crucial. Based on successful content, an inspirational video featuring Justin Baldoni encouraging individuals to live their best lives proved to be highly effective. Choosing the right message or content is an influential factor in generating clicks and shares. It is important to convey that the message or content is significant and resonates with people. The key to scaling a large audience is to encourage people to share your content. The more people share your content, the faster and more cost-efficient your audience expansion will be. Facebook was chosen as the platform to build a million followers due to its vast user base of over two billion people and its share-friendly nature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battalion 3/5 suffered the highest number of casualties in the war in Afghanistan. This is the story of one platoon in that distinguished battalion. Aware of U.S. plans to withdraw from the country, knowing their efforts were only a footprint in the sand, the fifty Marines of 3rd Platoon fought in Sangin, the most dangerous district in all of Afghanistan. So heavy were the casualties that the Secretary of Defense offered to pull the Marines out. Instead, they pushed forward. Each Marine in 3rd Platoon patrolled two and a half miles a day for six months—a total of one million steps—in search of a ghostlike enemy that struck without warning. Why did the Marines attack and attack, day after day? Every day brought a new skirmish. Each footfall might trigger an IED. Half the Marines in 3rd Platoon didn’t make it intact to the end of the tour. One Million Steps is the story of the fifty brave men who faced these grim odds and refused to back down. Based on Bing West’s embeds with 3rd Platoon, as well as on their handwritten log, this is a gripping grunt’s-eye view of life on the front lines of America’s longest war. Writing with a combat veteran’s compassion for the fallen, West also offers a damning critique of the higher-ups who expected our warriors to act as nation-builders—and whose failed strategy put American lives at unnecessary risk. Each time a leader was struck down, another rose up to take his place. How does one man instill courage in another? What welded these men together as firmly as steel plates? This remarkable book is the story of warriors caught between a maddening, unrealistic strategy and their unswerving commitment to the fight. Fearsome, inspiring, and poignant in its telling, One Million Steps is sure to become a classic, a unique and enduring testament to the American warrior spirit. Praise for One Million Steps “West shows the reality of modern warfare in a way that is utterly gripping.”—Max Boot, author of Invisible Armies “A gripping, boot-level account of Marines in Afghanistan during the bloody struggle with Taliban fighters.”—Los Angeles Times “One Million Steps transcends combat narrative: It is an epic of contemporary small-unit combat.”—Eliot A. Cohen, author of Supreme Command “A blistering assault on America’s senior military leadership.”—The Wall Street Journal “A heart-pounding portrayal . . . a compelling account of what these men endured.”—The Washington Post “Stunning, sobering, and brilliantly written.”—Newt Gingrich “One of the most intrepid military journalists, Bing West, delivers a heart-wrenching account of one platoon’s fight.”—Bill Bennett, host of Morning in America “Bing West has reconfirmed his standing as one of the most intrepid and insightful observers of America’s wars. . . . One Million Steps reveals the essence of small-unit combat, the very soul of war.”—The Weekly Standard “A searing read, but it is one that all Americans should undertake. We send our sons into battle, and few know what our warriors experience.”—The Washington Times
